The Segway!
The Segway is a new kind of transportation and leisure activity, invented by Dean Kamen. It
was first unveiled in December, 2001. The name Segway is a homophone of the word ‘segue’, which
means ‘smooth transition’. As the name promises, the Segway is certainly one of the most stress-
free, leisurely ways to travel. They only ever run on two wheels, and the driver, whilst holding the
handle, leans gently forward on the platform to command the device to move forward. To reverse,
the driver leans backwards. The user glides easily along the road in an almost entirely upright
position. The Segway can reach a maximum speed of around 20 kph.
One of the most beautiful and mysterious features of this device is its ability to remain
upright at all times. Inside the Segway, there are two tilt sensors and five gyroscopic sensors that
were developed by BAE Systems’ Advanced Technology Centre. These components sense the
weight of the user as it shifts forward or back. These sensors change the speed of the device,
depending on the distribution of the user’s weight. As a result, the Segway is constantly balancing
itself and its driver, making sure the trip is as smooth and as enjoyable as possible.
So, where can the Segway be used? The Segway is a perfect vehicle to use when sightseeing
in a new city. On a Segway, you will never get tired by the effort of walking, and its compact size
means it can move easily along sidewalks. How better to see the famous architecture of Paris than to
glide weightlessly through its historic streets? Segways are now used by tour guide companies across
the world. The police have even been using them to patrol inner-city areas.
Segways are not, however, considered to be entirely safe by all countries. In the United
Kingdom, for instance, the Segway is classified as a motor vehicle, but strangely, it does not meet
the standards for the country’s motor vehicle safety policy. It is therefore unlawful to use the Segway
anywhere in the UK, except on private property.
This, you may think, is unjustified. Why would a government deny their citizens such an
enjoyable way of moving around? But, one must not forget the very sad story that forms part of the
history of the Segway. In 2009, an English man, Jim Heselden, bought the Segway Company off its
first boss, Dean Kamen. Only a few weeks after his purchase, Jim was riding his off-road version of
the Segway around his home near Boston Spa in the north of England. Later that day, he was found
dead at the bottom of a cliff. Investigators suggested that Jim must have somehow lost control of the
device, accidentally driven off the cliff and plummeted 30 metres to his death.
So, if you travel by Segway anytime soon, be sure to stick to the sidewalk!
The author admires the Segway’s ability to stay upright at all times and its stress-
free nature.
2. What must the driver do if he or she wants to make the Segway accelerate or reverse?
3. Do the police know exactly how Jim Heseldon died on his Segway? Give evidence from
the language of the text in your answer.
No, they do not because the article used ‘somehow’ to explain the accident.
They are classified as motor vehicles but they do not meet the safety standards of
motor vehicles.
5. What makes the Segway useful for both inner-city tourism and policing?
Its compact size and being able to be used on sidewalks make the Segway useful for
both inner-city tourism and policing.
No, I wouldn’t like to try because I don’t want to have any accidents.
