Activity #1

BCPD

1. Calculate the force due to gravity on a one-pound mass @ a location

when the acceleration due to gravity is 32.14 ft/sec2 ( about 10,000 ft.
above sea level )

2. A car whose mass is 2 metric ton is accelerated uniformly from standstill

to 100 Kph in 5 sec. Find the mass in pounds, the acceleration in m/s2,
the driving force in Newstons, and the distance travelled in m, ft.

3. Two masses, one of 10 kg and the other unknown, are placed on a scale
in a region where g= 9.67 m/s2. The combined weight of these two masses
is 174.06 N. Find the unknown mass in Kg and lb.

4. A 3 kg plastic tank that has a volume of 0.2 m3 is filled with liquid water.
Determine the weight of the combined system in Newton.

5. Two liquids of different densities (density one = 1500 kg/m3, density two
= 500 kg/m3) are poured together into a 100 liters tank, filling it. If the
resulting density of the mixture is 800 kg/m3. Find the respective
quantities of liquids used. Also find the weight of the mixture in kg if
acceleration due to gravity is 9.675 m/s2.

6. The fuel tank of a large truck measures 1.2m x 0.9m x 0.6m. If it takes
12 min. to fill the tank @ a garage fuel pump. What is the mass flow rate
of fuel from the pump? Assume the relative density of the fuel is 0.8.

7. If the atmospheric pressure is 1.01325 bar, what will be the height of the
mercury column in a barometer? The density of mercury is 13600 kg/m3.

8. Compute the pressure difference between ‘m’ and ‘n’ as shown by the
differential manometer in KPa
9. An engineer carried an aneroid barometer from the ground floor to the
top floor of his building office. On the ground level the barometer read
30.15 in Hg, topside read 28.607 in Hg. Assume that the average
atmospheric air density was 0.075 lb/ft3 then, estimate the height of the
building in ft.

10. A vacuum gauge mounted on a condenser reads 0.66 m hg. What is

the absolute pressure in the condenser in KPa when the atmospheric
pressure is 101.3 KPa.?

11. What is the absolute temperature reading in Kelvin(K), if the arbitrary

temperature oC reading is thrice to the arbitrary temperature oF reading.

12. A wooden body with relative density of 0.65 floats in liquid with relative
density of 0.85. The volume of the wooden body above the liquid surface is
what percent of the total volume of the body?

13. A hollow cylinder with one end closed 1.0m in diameter and 2.0m long
weighs 3825 N. How many KN of lead weighing 110 KN/m3 must be
fastened inside bottom of the cylinder to make it float with 1.5 m
submerged in water.

14. A piece of wood foot square and 10 feet long weighing 40 lb/ft3 is
submerged vertically in a body of water. Its upper end being flush
with the water surface. What vertical force is required to hold it in
position?
15. Water flows through a firehose with a diameter of 7.5 cm at a velocity of
4.0 m/s. Calculate the velocity if the diameter of the nozzle is 2.3 cm.

16. Two pipes connected in series having length and friction factor “f”
equal to each other. If the diameter of pipe one is thrice the diameter of
pipe two, what is the ratio of fluid velocity?
