Discover how to download, visualise and manipulate Sentinel-3

marine data!
EUMETSAT has released a series of videos that provide training on how to access, download and
manipulate Sentinel-3 marine data from its Copernicus Online Data Access (CODA) platform.

A set of three Copernicus Sentinel-3 marine user handbooks has also been published. They will
enable end users to become familiar with the main features of products based on data coming from
instruments onboard Sentinel-3.

22 December 2017.

The majority of the data and information delivered by the Copernicus Space infrastructure and the
Copernicus services are available and accessible to any individual or organisation around the world
through a series of access points on a free, full and open access basis.

These access points are managed by different organisations such as the European Space Agency
(ESA), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and
Copernicus Entrusted Entities.
Today we focus on one access point operated by EUMETSAT: the Copernicus Online Data
Access (CODA). CODA provides free and open access to Sentinel-3 marine products distributed by
EUMETSAT on behalf of the European Commission. This web service consists of a 12-month rolling
archive with access to marine data in different latency modes (near real-time, short time critical and
non-time critical).

To make the data more easily available to the public and newcomers to the world of Earth
Observation, EUMETSAT has released a series of video tutorials on its YouTube channel.

The first episode of the three-part series is presented by Mark Higgins, Training Manager at
EUMETSAT. This video explains how to access Copernicus Sentinel-3 data from CODA;

The second episode is presented by Anne O’Carroll, remote sensing scientist at

EUMETSAT, and hones in on how to use Copernicus Sentinel-3 sea surface temperature
data;

The third episode features Hayley Evers-King, remote sensing scientist at EUMETSAT,
explaining how to access ocean colour data from the Sentinel-3 satellite and to work with it
using the Sentinel-3 toolbox;

The fourth episode, presented by Ewa Kwiatkowska, remote sensing scientist at EUMETSAT,
shows an overview of Atlantic Ocean Colour with Chlorophyll activity from January to July
2017.

These short videos provide a complete overview on how to access CODA, download Sentinel-3
imagery, visualise it and process it by using free and open source tools such as SNAP. Viewers will
also get an introduction of more complex topics, such as indicators on the quality of the data.

A set of three user guides has also been released to complement the training by allowing end users
to become familiar with the main features of products based on data coming from instruments
onboard Sentinel-3: SLSTR (Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer), OLCI (Ocean and
Land Colour Instrument) and SRAL (SAR Altimeter ).

The EUMETSAT training material aims to boost the use of satellite imagery and to stimulate
innovation and the creation of new businesses based on Copernicus data and information. Sentinel-3
marine data use cases include: supporting aquaculture and fisheries operations, bathing waters
quality assessments, monitoring and forecasting harmful algal blooms, providing inputs for reporting
for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and many more.

A Copernicus Online Data Access User Manual is also put at

the disposal of users
to improve their experiences using CODA.

EUMETSAT also operates EUMETCast, a service which, through satellite communication equipment,
delivers more than 380 different product collections, including EUMETSAT’s own satellite data,
Copernicus marine and atmosphere data, and a wide range of third-party products.
