EXERCISE 1
p
For f (x) = x2 + 1 and g(x) = x − 2, find the
compositions f ◦ g and g ◦ f and identify the domain
of each.
SOLUTION
p p
(f ◦g)(x) = f (g(x)) = f ( x − 2) = ( x − 2)2 +1 = x−2+1 = x−1
The domain of g is {x|x Ê 2}, the domain of f is R.
Therefore the domain of f ◦ g is {x|x Ê 2}.
p p
(g ◦ f )(x) = g(f (x)) = g(x2 + 1) = (x2 + 1) − 2 = x2 − 1
Its domain:·

x2 − 1 Ê 0 ⇔ ⇒ D = (−∞, −1] ∪ [1, +∞).

EXERCISE 2
Suppose a state’s income tax code states that tax
liability is 12% on the first 20 (million vnd) of taxable
earnings and 16% on the remainder. Find constants a
and b for the tax function

 0, if x É 0
T (x) = a + 0.12x, if 0 < x É 20
if x > 20

 b + 0.16(x − 20),

such that T (x) is continuous for all x.

Dr. Lê Xuân Đại (HCMUT-OISP) MIDTERM REVIEW HCM — 2015. 3 / 20

SOLUTION In order to T (x) is continuous for all x,
then T (x) is continous at x = 0, and x = 20.

lim T (x) = lim+ T (x) = T (0) ⇔ 0 = a = 0 ⇔ a = 0.

x→0− x→0

lim T (x) = lim+ T (x) = T (20)

x→20− x→20

⇔ a+0.12×20 = b+0.16×(20−20) = a+0.12×20 ⇔ b = 2.4.

In order to T (x) is continuous for all x, then
½
a = 0
b = 2.4

EXERCISE 3
Find all points on the graph of the function
f (x) = 2 sin x + sin2 x at which the tangent line is
horizontal.

EXERCISE 4
Suppose that u(t) measures the displacement
(measured in cm) of a weight suspended from a
spring t seconds after it is released and that
u(t) = 4 cos t. Find the velocity at any time t and
determine when the weight is moving fastest?

Dr. Lê Xuân Đại (HCMUT-OISP) MIDTERM REVIEW HCM — 2015. 6 / 20

SOLUTION Since u(t) represents position
(displacement), the velocity is given by u0 (t). We have

u0 (t) = 4.(− sin t) = −4 sin t

Since sin t oscillates between −1 and 1, so the largest

that |u0 (t)| can be is 4. This occurs when
π
sin t = ±1 ⇔ t = + kπ, (k ∈ N, since t > 0)
2
Notice that at these times u(t) = 0, so that the weight
is moving fastest when it is passing through its
resting position.

EXERCISE 9
A car is traveling at 50km/h due south at point 100km
north of an intersection. A police car is traveling at
40km/h due west at a point 50km east of the same
intersection. At that instant, the radar in the police
car measures the rate at which the distance between
the two cars is changing. What does the radar gun
register?

Dr. Lê Xuân Đại (HCMUT-OISP) MIDTERM REVIEW HCM — 2015. 17 / 20

SOLUTION
1
At a given time t , let x be the distance from police
car A to the intersection of the roads C , let y be
the distance from car B to C , let z be the distance
between the cars A and B.

Dr. Lê Xuân Đại (HCMUT-OISP) MIDTERM REVIEW HCM — 2015. 18 / 20

The equation that relates x, y and z is given by
Pythagorean theorem:

z2 = x2 + y 2

Differentiating each side with respect to t , we have

dz dx dy dz 1 dx dy
µ ¶
2z = 2x + 2y ⇒ = x +y

When x = 50, y = 100 ⇒ z = x2 + y 2 = 50 5, so
dz 1 −7000 −140
= p (50(−40) + 100(−50)) = p = p ≈ −62.6
dt 50 5 50 5 5
So that the radar gun registers 62.6km/h.
