CASE ANALYSIS #3

Plastic Pollution Philippines government on solving plastic trash problem: 'We've done all we can'

Viewpoint- Local Government Unit/Baranggay

Time Context- Current date (9/12/2023)

Backround of the Case- An archipelago of over 7,640 islands, the Philippines is the third worst ocean
plastic polluter in the world, after China and Indonesia, according to a 2015 study in the journal Science.
Globally, plastic pollution, especially in the ocean, is drawing increased attention as mounting research
reveals the danger it poses to lifeforms across the food web.

Problem Statement- The trash offers a filthy contrast to the tantalizing sunsets Manila Bay is famous for.
It also illustrates strikingly the enormity of the garbage problem facing this developing nation of more
than 100 million people. The Philippines generates an estimated 43,684 tons of garbage daily, including
4,609 tons of plastic waste, according to government data, and proper disposal facilities are lacking for
much of it.

1. If plastic pollution continues to increase, could it become inevitable?

2. What would be the impact on the existence of all living organisms if plastic pollution continues and
intensifies?

Alternative Course of Action-

ACA 1- Plastic Waste Reduction

Pros: Cutting down on the consumption of plastic waste can mitigate the current impacts and damage
the world is facing, particularly in relation to climate change. It can conserve environment, reducing
plastic waste helps protect wildlife and ecosystems, preventing harm caused by ingestion or
entanglement. It can also reduce the threat of extinction of other animals.

Cons: Implementing it may prove challenging, even though the process appears straightforward.
Adapting to it can be a time-consuming endeavor, and the learning curve may span several years.
