Dear CCAS Parents,

Over the past several years, many states, including Georgia, have passed laws with the intent of
increasing personal safety awareness and the roles of schools to include certain topics in the
curriculum. You may have heard of this legislation under its more common name, Erin's Law, in
honor of Erin Merryn, a brave young woman who has crossed the country advocating for laws
that will increase awareness of this crime against children. Georgia’s Erin’s Law Curriculum
Benchmarks were approved in 2018. For more information about the Georgia’s Erin’s Law
Curriculum Benchmarks, please visit the GADOE website here.

One of the requirements of this law is that schools provide an age-appropriate curriculum to all
students grades K-8. The purpose of the lessons is to provide students with the tools needed for
personal safety and to provide a nurturing and caring environment open for disclosure of any
incidents. Lessons may include a variety of discussions, activities, and videos.

Students will be presented with lessons in their classrooms the week of November 13-17 to meet
the requirements of Erin’s Law. The following concepts will be discussed:

• Identify safe and unsafe touches or behavior by another person, even another child
• Know how to set healthy boundaries with friends and families
• Identify safe adults to be able to confide
• Know the difference between safe and unsafe secrets
• Internet safety
• Abuse is never the victim’s fault, and no one deserves to be abused

If you have any questions, please contact Stacie Whalen, School Counselor. It may be important
to follow up with some conversations at home with your child to reinforce the importance of the
above safety principles. If you do not want your child to participate in the lesson, please
complete this form by November 10, 2023: PARENT OPT OUT

Sincerely,
Stacie Whalen
