Layers

Photoshop files can include many layers; the layers stack together to create the image. Use

layers to keep control over the parts of your graphic. Layers can be rearranged, modified,

hidden, or deleted.

Layers contain the images, text, or objects that make up a layered file. They let you move, edit,

and work with content on one layer without affecting content on other layers.

Layers are arranged in a stack in the Layers panel, which is usually located in the bottom right of

the work area. If the Layers panel is not visible, choose Window > Layers.

In the Layers panel, click the eye icon to the left of a layer to hide its content. Click again in the

same spot to reveal the content. This is a useful way to remind yourself what’s on a particular

layer.

A layer must be selected in order to make changes to it. In the Layers panel, click once to the

right of a layer name to select that layer.

To add more layers to your selection, hold Ctrl and select the layers you want.

To change the name of the layer, double click on it and rename it

Background Layer

When you first open an image file, you will have a single layer: the Background.

Duplicating the Background Layer

In order to work with your background layer non-destructively (maintaining an unedited version

of the original image), you will need to duplicate your background layer before you begin

working.

1. Right-click the Background layer in the Layers panel.

2. Choose Duplicate Layer.

3. ctrl+J3. Click OK at the Duplicate Layer prompt. A new layer is created called Background copy. This

layer is unlocked and can be edited. Your original Background layer is maintained behind the

Background copy layer.

 Deleting a Layer

You may quickly delete layers without affecting any other layers on your image. The following

section

explains how to delete a layer:

1. Click the layer that you wish to delete in the Layers panel.

2. Click the Delete icon, located on the bottom right side of the Layers panel.

Note: you can also delete a layer by selecting it and pressing Delete from the keyboard.

Resizing a layer

Change the size of the content of selected layers.

To resize layers:

1. In the Layers panel, select one or more layers that contain images or objects you want

to resize.

2. Choose Edit > Free Transform (shortcut is Ctrl+T) A transform border appears around all

the content on the selected layers. Hold the Shift key to avoid distorting the content,

and drag the corners or edges until it is the desired size. Drag inside the transform

border to move the content around the image. Drag outside the transform border to

rotate the content.3. Click the check mark in the options bar or press Enter.

Linking Layers

1. Select the layers or layer groups in the Layers panel.

2. Click the Link Layers icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.

A link icon appears to the right of the layer name in the Layers panel.

To remove a link, click the Link Layers icon again.

Add images to a layered design

Bring more images into a design, each image on its own layer.

To add images to a design:

1. Choose File > Place Embedded, navigate to an image file in File Explorer, and click Place.

2. Hold the Shift key to avoid distorting the image, and drag the corners of the image border to

resize the added image.

3. Drag inside the border to position the added image where you want it.

4. Click the check mark in the options bar to finalize the placement. This automatically creates a

new layer containing the added image.

 Merging All Visible Layers

Photoshop allows you to hide certain layers from view. You can do this by pressing the Eye symbol icon

next to a layer in the Layers panel on the right.

If the Layers panel isn’t visible, click Windows > Layers or press F7 on your keyboard.

Hidden layers will appear with a black box icon, while visible layers will appear with the Eye symbol.

With certain layers hidden, you can then merge all visible layers together.

To do this, hide the layers you wish to leave untouched, right-click one of the visible layers (or press the

Layers panel options menu button in the top-right), and then press the “Merge Visible” option.You can also press
the Shift + Ctrl + E keys on your keyboard to quickly perform this type of layer merge.

Flattening All Layers in Photoshop

Only certain types of image files allow you to use layers. Photoshop files in the PSD format support

layers, but other image types like JPG or PNG do not.

Using layers makes it easier to edit your image, but if you prefer, you can merge all of your layers

together. Photoshop will do this automatically if you save your image as a PNG or JPG file, but if you

want to do it manually, you can.

To do so, make sure the Layers panel is visible by pressing F7 or clicking Windows > Layers. You’ll also

need to make sure that all hidden layers are visible—these will otherwise be ignored and removed.

To make any hidden layer visible, press the sunken square icon next to the layer in the Layers panel.

If your layers are visible (or you’re happy to discard hidden layers), right-click any layer in the Layers

panel or press the Layers panel options menu button in the top-right.
‫‪From here, click the “Flatten Image” option.If you have any hidden layers, you’ll need to confirm whether or not‬‬
‫‪you wish to discard them. Press‬‬

‫‪“OK” to do so or “Cancel” to stop the process.‬‬

‫‪If you choose “OK” or if all of your layers are visible before you begin, your layers will merge together‬‬

‫‪and you’ll no longer be able to move or edit individual items.‬‬

‫‪If you want to undo this, simply press Ctrl + Z on your keyboard immediately after you merge the layers‬‬

‫‪together or press Edit > Undo instead‬‬
