Technical Description
ENERCON SCADA System

1 Introduction
The ENERCON SCADA system is the established platform for remote monitoring and
control of wind energy converters (WECs) and an integral component of ENERCON’s ser-
vice and maintenance programme. Introduced in 1998, the system now reliably serves
thousands of wind energy converters worldwide. It offers numerous optional functions and
interfaces for the grid integration of ENERCON wind farms and compliance with grid
codes and electrotechnical regulations. As a modular system, ENERCON SCADA can be
adapted and expanded easily and flexibly for customer-specific applications. ENERCON
SCADA is also used in solar parks and hydro power stations.
This document introduces the components and functionalities of the ENERCON SCADA
system. Further documentation containing detailed information on individual SCADA sys-
tem components is available on request from your ENERCON Sales representative.

Fig. 1: Schematic structure of the ENERCON SCADA system with standard components

Shutdown or curtailment of individual wind energy converters, e.g. due to project-specific

constraints on noise or shadow effects, is not effected via the ENERCON SCADA system
but instead is programmed directly into the control software of each wind energy con-
verter. This approach ensures compliance with emission limits even in the event of com-
munication faults within the ENERCON SCADA system.
Your point of contact for questions regarding compliance with country-specific or project-
specific requirements and associated equipment is the Sales Grid Integration team, who

Technical Description
ENERCON SCADA System

2 Standard components and features

2.1 ENERCON SCADA Server

2.1.1 Function
The ENERCON SCADA Server is the key component of the ENERCON SCADA system.
The ENERCON SCADA Server performs various wind farm communication, open-loop
control and closed-loop control functions. It is also the central repository for the current
and archived operating data of the WECs and the SCADA components. In addition, cer-
tain open-loop control algorithms can be implemented using the ENERCON SCADA
Server.
The ENERCON SCADA Server can fulfil a range of functions including:
■ Acquisition and storage of the wind farm’s operating data
■ Communication between the wind farm and the ENERCON Service Center
■ Communication between the wind farm and the customer and/or grid operator
■ Wind farm control (open-loop)

2.1.2 Data types

The ENERCON SCADA Server provides the following types of data:

Online data
Online data are instantaneous values that the ENERCON SCADA Server refreshes as of-
ten as permitted by the wind farm’s SCADA system. The refresh rate of these data de-
pends on the number of wind energy converters installed in the wind farm, the structure of
the wind farm data bus, and – primarily – the communication hardware selected.
Online data also include fixed data such as the serial number of a wind energy converter
(WEC).

Report data
Measurement data for each wind energy converter, spanning its entire operating time, are
collected. While in operation, the WEC is permanently monitored by measuring equip-
ment; a data logger records all measured values. This includes WEC status data as well
as average values for specific time periods. The average values consist of data collected
by the ENERCON SCADA software on the ENERCON SCADA Server.
Typically, the averages are computed for periods of one minute, ten minutes, one day,
one week, one month, and one year. All of these are based on one-minute averages. All
10-minute values (plus longer intervals) are stored on the ENERCON SCADA Server.

Archiving operating data

As a rule, the capacity of the ENERCON SCADA Server hard drive allows for backup of
the entire data within the 20-year operating period. If data acquisition by the ENERCON
SCADA Server also includes transmission substations, meteorological masts or similar,
the data volume may increase considerably, meaning that the capacity limit will be
reached sooner. If the hard drive is 90 % full the ENERCON SCADA Server will send a
warning message to the ENERCON Service Center.

Technical Description
ENERCON SCADA System

2.1.3 Data transmission to Technical Service Dispatch at the ENERCON Service

Center
Data from all installed ENERCON WECs worldwide is transmitted nightly to the
ENERCON Service Center, where it is saved (provided telephone communication is work-
ing). An updated record of the status messages from the past 24 hours is retrieved, along
with the operating data for the past day and month. If more than 24 hours have passed
since the last successful communication, the time periods for data retrieval are extended
accordingly.
24 hours after the last communication, the ENERCON SCADA system sends at least a
test message to Technical Service Dispatch. This ensures that any prolonged communic-
ation faults with the outside world do not go unnoticed.

2.2 ENERCON wind farm data bus

The ENERCON SCADA Server is connected to the wind energy converters inside the
wind farm via the farm-internal fibre-optic data bus system.
To ensure a high degree of communication reliability, a maximum of 10 wind energy con-
verters are combined into one physical data bus. If there are more WECs in the wind farm,
multiple physical data bus cables are set up using a star topology. The logical data bus
system always includes all WECs in a wind farm.
Connection of the ENERCON SCADA Server to the ENERCON data bus system is
through an interface PCB that converts electrical and optical signals.
The SCADA interface PCB can optionally be equipped with backup batteries. If a wind en-
ergy converter on a physical data bus is de-energised, e.g. due to maintenance work on
the medium-voltage transformer, the backup batteries allow communication to be main-
tained with the other WECs upstream of the affected WEC from the perspective of the
ENERCON SCADA Server.
To maintain continuity of the data link even in the event that a section of the optical fibre
data bus system is disrupted, the data bus can optionally be set up using a ring topology.
In the event of a fault, the ENERCON SCADA Ring Management is then able to maintain
communication with the majority of the WECs or devices (see ch. 3.7, p. 29).

ENERCON SCADA
Remote Software

Fig. 2: ENERCON SCADA Remote

ENERCON SCADA Remote is part of the ENERCON SCADA software package and is
used primarily for remote monitoring of the wind energy converters. The application con-
nects to the ENERCON SCADA Server, allowing users to view current and historical wind
farm data online and to work with this data offline.
The application presents all data captured on the wind farm in tables or as graphics. This
includes current operating data as well as historical data, for example status messages,
wind speed, operating hours, and the technical availability of the wind energy converter.
If advanced user rights have been configured by ENERCON, ENERCON SCADA Remote
can be used to start or stop individual wind energy converters or the entire wind farm.

2.3.2 Data exchange

Online data

Fig. 3: ENERCON SCADA Remote: Daily data display

Customers can use the software to monitor existing WECs online. This requires a tele-
communications link between the customer’s remote PC and the ENERCON SCADA
Server. The display on the remote PC is refreshed as quickly as possible, depending on
the data transfer rate between the ENERCON SCADA system and the remote PC.
For more information about online data, see Online data, p. 2.

Report data
SCADA Remote can be used to transfer the data collected on the ENERCON SCADA
Server for specific selected time periods to a remote PC (e.g. the customer’s). An exact
copy of the operating data is created on the remote PC and can then be analysed without
the need for a permanent online connection. The original files remain on the ENERCON
SCADA Server and are thus protected from accidental modification.
The acquired data is stored on the remote PC in dBASE IV format and can be processed
as desired, for example using dBASE, spreadsheet applications, or other software pro-
grams.
For more information on report data, see Report data, p. 2.

2.4 Status and information messages

General
While in operation, an ENERCON wind energy converter generates messages describing
its current status.
Some of these messages are automatically transmitted from the wind farm to ENERCON
Service to help them ensure WEC availability. Messages that are not directly related to
the WEC’s technical availability are not transmitted to the ENERCON Service Center but
are available through ENERCON SCADA Remote.

Status
The status describes the current operating state of the wind energy converter. Status
messages record continuously the status of the wind energy converter and, where applic-
able, the reason that has caused the current status. Status messages include for ex-
ample:
Turbine in operation or Lack of wind.
Each status consists of a main status and a substatus (additional status).
■ The main status describes the overall operating state, e.g. TURBINE STOPPED.
■ The substatus (additional status) provides more details and the reason behind the
main status, e.g. TURBINE STOPPED : CONTROL CABINET.
Status messages appear in ENERCON SCADA Remote, as well as on the display in the
wind energy converter, as numeric codes with brief descriptions. If the status is 0:0, the
wind energy converter is running.

Fault messages
If the wind energy converter is in a non-standard operating state (e.g. an error has oc-
curred), it transmits a fault message and stops.

Information messages
Information messages in the ENERCON SCADA system provide information about the
wind energy converter and its components. Like status messages, each information mes-
sage consists of a main information message and a sub-information message.
Information messages appear in ENERCON SCADA Remote, as well as on the display in
the wind energy converter, as numeric codes with brief descriptions.

Warning messages
Warning messages are information messages with higher priority. Each message is made
up of a main warning message and a sub-warning message.
If the wind energy converter is in an abnormal operating state (e.g. lubrication system
fault) that does not cause an immediate shutdown of the WEC but requires attention from
Service, the wind energy converter transmits a warning message. The wind energy con-
verter initially remains in operation.

Technical Description
ENERCON SCADA System

2.5 Data storage during a communication failure

Status messages
During a communication failure between the control system of an ENERCON wind energy
converter and the ENERCON SCADA Server, up to 400 status messages can be stored
(e.g. CS82a) depending on the type of control system.
When communication has been re-established, at least 50 back status messages can be
transmitted to the ENERCON SCADA Server. If required, the number of back status mes-
sages can be increased.

Information and warning messages

Information and warning messages are not deleted from the control system memory until
they have been transmitted to the ENERCON SCADA Server.
Because no messages can be transmitted during a communication failure, these are
saved and can be transmitted to the ENERCON SCADA Server when communication has
been re-established.

Messages during maintenance

The messages generated during the maintenance of an ENERCON wind energy
converter are not transmitted to the ENERCON SCADA Server. The wind energy
converter does not store these messages, either.

Instantaneous values
Instantaneous values such as e.g. wind speed, rotational speed, power, etc. are not
saved.

10-minute average values

The ENERCON SCADA Server cyclically retrieves the average values provided by the
control system and uses them to form a 10-minute mean.
While communication is interrupted or down, the ENERCON SCADA Server cannot re-
trieve any average values and is therefore unable to form any 10-minute mean values.

Operating hours and power fed into grid

The operating hours and the power fed into the grid are recorded and saved by the WEC
control system.
When communication has been re-established, the data is transmitted to the ENERCON
SCADA Server.

SCADA Devices
SCADA devices such as RTU, FCU, METEO, etc. do not store any data in the event of a
communication failure.

3 Additional components and features

The additional components and features of the ENERCON SCADA system require separ-
ate contractual agreement. Please contact your Sales representative for more details.

3.1 Data interfaces with external systems

3.1.1 Overview
ENERCON offers the following data interfaces with external systems:
■ ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC
■ ENERCON SCADA PDI-61400
■ ENERCON SCADA RTU-I
■ ENERCON SCADA RTU-C (for more features, see ch. 3.2.2, p. 14 and ch. 3.3.4,
p. 19)
■ ENERCON SCADA FCU (for more features, see ch. 3.3.5, p. 22)
The data interfaces are used when setpoint specification and data retrieval must be fast
and flexible. This requires a permanent data link. ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC and
ENERCON SCADA 61400 can be used to retrieve data from individual wind energy con-
verters. Compared to the ENERCON SCADA Remote monitoring software, the data ex-
change via interface primarily offers the option of specifying new setpoints. The associ-
ated time delay depends on the data link transfer rate.

Fig. 4: ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC within the ENERCON SCADA system

ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC is an OPC XML DA server in accordance with the V1.01
specifications of the OPC Foundation. It can be used to retrieve measured values and for
open-loop control of the entire wind farm or individual wind energy converters.
All data available through the ENERCON SCADA Remote software can also be retrieved
by means of ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC. In addition, setpoints can be transmitted via
ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC (for instance, to adjust reactive power generation by the
wind farm).
The features of ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC as well as its available technical interfaces
and signals are described in its respective documentation. The method for setpoint modi-
fication must be selected on a project-specific basis.

Technical Description
ENERCON SCADA System

3.1.2.2 Data exchange

The OPC XML DA server can provide and receive the following types of data:

Online data
The OPC XML DA server refreshes online data as often as permitted by the wind farm’s
ENERCON SCADA system. The structure of the specific project is included in the data
transfer and can be viewed on the client. The shortest possible refresh interval within OPC
is one second.
For more information on online data, see Online data, p. 2.

Report data
The OPC server stores historical report data, i.e. it provides not only current values but
also values from past time intervals and thus helps ensure data consistency between the
customer's computer and the wind farm computer.
For more information on report data, see Report data, p. 2.

Setpoints
The client can use control data to modify wind farm or WEC parameters. These include
start/stop commands for individual WECs and the modification of setpoints for wind farm
control.

3.1.2.3 External analyses

Customers have the option of exporting the data from the wind farm OPC XML DA server
for further processing.
For this purpose, the customer must obtain a software application that supports data ex-
change via the OPC XML DA protocol. A wide range of commercial software applications
is available. Customers can decide individually which data to select, view and store on
their systems.
The OPC XML DA server in the wind farm is designed so that customers can save to their
local systems the exact same data that exists in the wind farm, even if online communica-
tion is poor. This is achieved by providing the entire history in addition to current online
and average values. In this way, if data transmission is interrupted, customers have the
option to close any gaps in the data at a later stage. However, this process must be initi-
ated by the OPC client (= customer) since the server cannot determine which gaps may
have occurred in the customer’s data.

ENERCON SCADA PDI-61400 provides an interface that enables online access to indi-
vidual WEC data as well as wind farm data, independent of the ENERCON SCADA Re-
mote software.
ENERCON SCADA PDI-61400 is an interface that uses the IEC 61400-25 data model and
the IEC 60870-5-104 (2006) protocol for data transfer.
It is a secondary station that supports only Monitor Direction. It does not support Reverse
Direction or Both Directions.
fig. 5, p. 11 illustrates the communication setup within the ENERCON wind farm. A
primary station connects to the ENERCON SCADA Server through the communication
network and can thus access the data from the wind energy converters and the wind farm.
In addition, ENERCON SCADA PDI-61400 can be used to retrieve online data from the
ENERCON SCADA devices (RTU/FCU) and to specify setpoints, for example to affect the
closed-loop control system of the wind farm. In addition, it allows starting, stopping and re-
setting the wind energy converters.
The features of ENERCON SCADA PDI-61400 as well as its available technical interfaces
and signals are described in a separate document. The method for setpoint modification
must be selected on a project-specific basis.

3.1.4 ENERCON SCADA RTU (RTU-I and RTU-C)

The ENERCON SCADA Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) functions as an external data inter-
face of the ENERCON SCADA system. It supports DNP3, Modbus RTU and Ethernet-
based field buses such as Modbus TCP or IEC 60870-5-104.
As an option, the RTU can be equipped with digital and/or analog I/O modules to ex-
change signals with the utility company or the wind farm operator/owner. In addition, de-
pending on its configuration, the RTU can be used for open-loop or closed-loop control of
grid parameters.
The following setpoints can be transmitted to the RTU:
■ Active power P [%] relative to the contractually agreed wind farm power injection
■ Reactive power Q [%] relative to the nominal reactive power of the wind farm
■ Power factor cos φ
■ Voltage offset U [%] relative to the nominal voltage at the network connection point

IEC 60870-5-104 interface

The ENERCON SCADA RTU can be operated as an IEC 60870-5-104 controlled station
(slave). The IEC 60870-5-104 interfaces can be used only to write setpoints and read
wind farm data. It is not possible to read data from individual WECs.

DNP3 interface
The RTU can act as DNP3 outstation (DNP3 slave) and connect to control rooms / dis-
patch centres (DNP3 master) (protocol implementation: DNP3-L2 Outstation).
The DNP3 interface can only be used to write setpoints and read wind farm data. It is not
possible, however, to read data from individual WECs.

Modbus TCP/RTU interface

The Modbus interface can only be used to write setpoints and read wind farm data. It is
not possible to read data from individual wind energy converters.

Technical Description
ENERCON SCADA System

Using a grid data analyzer connected to external measuring transformers, the RTU meas-
ures three-phase currents (I1, I2, I3) and voltages (U1, U2, U3, N) at the reference point,
typically the point of common coupling. The grid data analyzer measures the electric cur-
rent and voltage values in three phases and uses these to extract all important grid para-
meters such as active and reactive power.
In combination with the setpoints, which may be specified e.g. by grid operators, the RTU-
C provides the wind farm with control values that are transmitted to the WECs by the
ENERCON SCADA Server. In this way a closed-loop control system can be implemented.
The following values are recorded as 10-minute mean values and stored on the
ENERCON SCADA Server:
■ Active power P, P1, P2, P3
■ Reactive power Q, Q1, Q2, Q3
■ Phase-to-phase voltages U12, U23, U31
■ Currents I1, I2, I3
■ Grid frequency

Fig. 7: ENERCON METEO

The ENERCON METEO system facilitates the acquisition and evaluation of meteorolo-
gical data in conjunction with ENERCON SCADA. The main ENERCON METEO compon-
ent is the data logger installed in a weather data acquisition cabinet. It enables a wide
range of sensors to be connected for the purpose of taking wind and weather measure-
ments. Sensors or meteorological masts are not included with the ENERCON METEO
system, but can be provided by ENERCON upon request.

Data acquisition and transmission

An ENERCON METEO microcontroller unit reads the data from the data logger at one-
second intervals. Based on this data, it calculates a data record once per minute, contain-
ing one-minute average, minimum and maximum values. The ENERCON SCADA Server
retrieves the data records from the microcontroller unit at one-minute intervals and uses
the data to calculate greater average values (10-minute, hourly, daily, etc.). The associ-
ated time stamp for a data record is defined by the ENERCON SCADA Server.
As long as there is an active online connection between ENERCON SCADA Remote and
the ENERCON SCADA Server, the data provided by the data logger at one-second inter-
vals are transmitted to SCADA and can be viewed using ENERCON SCADA Remote. Al-
ternatively, the data can also be retrieved by external OPC clients using OPC XML. The
refresh rate of the data display in ENERCON SCADA Remote depends on the transmis-
sion rate of the online connection. If using a reliable land line connection, the displayed
values are generally updated about once per second.

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

The optional UPS enables normal operation of the ENERCON METEO system to continue
if the external power supply fails. If power is supplied via the UPS, the cabinet heating
system is deliberately shut down so that measurement can continue for as long as pos-
sible. The UPS can provide power for several days or weeks, depending on the temperat-
ures on site and the number of sensors that are connected. The system cannot be
equipped with a solar power supply.

3.3 Open-loop and closed-loop control with SCADA

3.3.1 Overview
The ENERCON SCADA system represents a comprehensive tool for executing various
open-loop and closed-loop control functions in the wind farm.
The ENERCON SCADA components can be used to implement both open-loop (no feed-
back) and closed-loop (with feedback) control systems.
ENERCON offers the following ENERCON SCADA system components for open-loop
control:
■ ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC (for more features, see ch. 3.1.2, p. 9)
■ ENERCON SCADA RTU (all types)
ENERCON offers the following ENERCON SCADA system components for closed-loop
control:
■ ENERCON SCADA RTU-C (for more features, see ch. 3.1.4, p. 13 and ch. 3.2.2,
p. 14)
■ ENERCON SCADA FCU (Farm Control Unit)

3.3.2 Open-loop control with the ENERCON SCADA system

The simplest way to influence wind farm operation is by open-loop control of the operating
parameters. Open-loop control (as opposed to closed-loop control) means that the effect
of the specified setpoint is not fed back into the system. In other words, the value that is
actually achieved is not monitored and cannot be automatically taken into account for the
next control operation.

Actual values
Setpoints SCADA Wind energy converter

Setpoint-based control
Setpoints can be specified as control parameters on the ENERCON SCADA Server. The
specified values are passed to all WECs connected to the ENERCON SCADA system and
remain valid until new setpoints are specified.
The following operating parameters can be controlled:
■ Active power
■ Power factor
■ Reactive power

Table-based control
Table-based control can be used to specify setpoints for the nominal power of the wind
farm and the power factor for up to 40 time intervals per week. The wind farm’s control
system accesses and implements these time-specific setpoints. ENERCON enters the

table values once through ENERCON SCADA Remote or on the ENERCON SCADA
Server itself. Parameter entry and modification is password-protected and can only be
performed by ENERCON.

Control values via interfaces

ENERCON offers interfaces which can also be used to transmit open-loop control signals
e.g. from the grid operator to the wind farm's ENERCON SCADA system. These include
ENERCON SCADA RTU (all configurations) and ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC.

3.3.3 Closed-loop control with the ENERCON SCADA system

The ENERCON SCADA RTU-C or ENERCON SCADA FCU can be used in combination
with the ENERCON SCADA system and the wind energy converters to set up a closed-
loop control system. The reference point for closed-loop control of electrical variables is
the point where measuring values are acquired, typically, the point of common coupling
with the grid operator.
In order to set up a closed-loop control system, the RTU-C or the FCU must be deployed.
External setpoints can be received through the interfaces described. The accuracy and
dynamics of the closed-loop control system depend on the configuration of the wind farm,
the number of wind energy converters connected, the current and voltage transformer
class, and other factors.

The RTU-C fulfils the following functions:

■ Data interface
■ Electrical measurement at the point of common coupling
■ Wind farm control (open or closed loop)
The RTU-C can be used to control the wind farm in a closed loop based on actual para-
meters at the point of common coupling. Active power, reactive power, power factor
(cos Phi) and voltage may be used as reference values. Various closed-loop control
modes are available; these must be selected and configured by ENERCON specialists ac-
cording to the project-specific requirements.
Using a grid data analyzer connected to measuring transformers, the ENERCON SCADA
Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) measures three-phase currents (I1, I2, I3) and voltages (U1,
U2, U3, N) at the reference point, typically, the point of common coupling.
In combination with the setpoints, which may be specified e.g. by grid operators, the RTU
provides the wind farm with control values that are transmitted to the WECs by the
ENERCON SCADA Server. In this way a closed-loop control system can be implemented.

3.3.4.2 Types of open-loop and closed-loop control systems

Setpoint specification
The following different methods of setpoint specification exist:
■ Fixed setpoint
The setpoint is set to a fixed value in the RTU.
■ Online setpoint
The setpoint is specified using the defined interface.
■ Setpoint based on characteristic curve
The applicable setpoint is determined based on a curve. The curve parameter can be
the average active power or the average grid voltage. The calculation of the average
value is based on a configurable time range from 1 second to 1 minute.
With closed-loop reactive power control (Q control) selected, the setpoint is specified as a
relative value based on the installed reactive power of the wind farm. For closed-loop
power factor control, an absolute setpoint is specified.
There is a time limit for each setpoint application. This configurable setting ensures proper
settling of the controller.

Active power control (open and closed loop)

Controller
The controller can operate in different modes depending on the deployment type:
■ Default Values Open Loop Control
■ P Open Loop Control
■ P Closed Loop Control

Reactive power control (open and closed loop)

Controller
The controller can operate in different modes depending on the deployment type:

Limitation of reactive power range

In order to minimise potential yield losses caused by exceeding the required minimum re-
active power, the RTU-C is able to limit the reactive power range used for control opera-
tions at the network connection point. For this purpose, a curve characteristic can be
defined that limits the reactive power range that is actually used based on two character-
istic curves (export side / import side).

Fig. 11: FCU overview

The ENERCON SCADA Farm Control Unit (FCU) can be used to implement fast and con-
stant centralised closed-loop control in the wind farm. There is a defined, project-specific
reference point for this closed-loop control system. It is typically the same as the wind
farm’s point of common coupling with the high or medium-voltage grid.
Depending on the grid operator’s requirements, both the active power fed into the grid and
the reactive power and its associated parameters (power factor and voltage) can be con-
trolled.
Apart from the central hardware and software components at the reference point (FCU
control cabinet), the ENERCON SCADA FCU comprises additional hardware in the indi-
vidual WECs as well as a dedicated fibre-optic data transmission system.

3.3.5.2 Closed-loop control

Closed-loop control setpoints can be configured as fixed parameters or specified extern-
ally via defined interfaces.
The controller and its parameters are designed and configured by ENERCON according
to project-specific details. To ensure reliable closed-loop control at the point of common
coupling, close collaboration between the customer, ENERCON and the grid operator is
essential. It is the project developer's responsibility to work with the grid operator early on
to determine the requirements at the point of common coupling, so that the appropriate
time and costs can be included in the planning.
The FCU registers the voltage and the power injected at a reference point and uses it to
compute the actual values of the controlled variables, e.g. active or reactive power. The
controllers implemented in the FCU use the difference from the specified setpoints (devi-
ation) to generate the corresponding actuating variables and transmit these to the wind
energy converters. The FCU sends the same control signal to all wind energy converters
in the control loop.

Active power limitation

This controller limits the active power injected at the reference point to a setpoint specified
e.g. by the grid operator. The active power injected at the reference point is registered
and, provided that there is sufficient wind speed, adjusted to the specified setpoint. The
controller consists of a P controller with time delay. Setpoint changes can be specified in
steps or using an adjustable gradient.

Power factor control

This controller adjusts the power factor cos Phi at the reference point to a setpoint spe-
cified e.g. by the grid operator.
The FCU uses the specified power factor and the active power injected and measured at
the reference point to compute the required reactive power setpoint. The actual value of
the reactive power infeed is adjusted to the reactive power setpoint.

Reactive power control

This controller adjusts the reactive power fed in at the reference point to a setpoint spe-
cified e.g. by the grid operator.

Voltage control
Since points of common coupling are primarily inductive, the voltage at the reference point
can be controlled by outputting or absorbing reactive power.
The voltage controller implemented in the FCU converts the difference between the
voltage setpoint and the actual voltage value into a reactive power actuating signal, which
it sends to all WECs in the wind farm for which the control has been activated.

Voltage-dependent reactive power control (voltage droop control)

This controller structure can be used to achieve a linear Q-∆U infeed characteristic (static)
specified by the grid operator. This type of curve describes the reactive power to be fed in
at the reference point, depending on the measured difference in voltage at the reference
point.

D0231306-6 / DA 23 of 36
Technical Description
ENERCON SCADA System

For this purpose, the difference between the setpoint and the actual value of the voltage
measured at the reference point is initially established. The reactive power fed in at the
reference point is then adjusted to the reactive power setpoint that results from the Q-∆U
characteristic.

Limitation of reactive power range

In order to minimise potential yield losses caused by exceeding the required minimum re-
active power, the FCU is able to limit the reactive power range used for control operations
at the network connection point. For this purpose, a curve characteristic can be defined
that limits the reactive power range that is actually used based on two characteristic
curves (export side / import side).

3.5 Event control system

The event trigger control system is a program installed and executed on the ENERCON
SCADA Server. Depending on the date and time and taking measurement data into ac-
count, it can be used to respond to wind energy converter status changes.
By entering conditional command lines into the process configuration file, actions can be
programmed to a certain extent, e.g. “Start/stop WEC” or “Send messages”. However, the
event trigger control system cannot be used to reduce active power. Any events that occur
are documented separately.

This system cannot be used to implement safety-relevant open-loop control pro-

cedures!

Three event types are available for selection:

■ Date/time
■ WEC status
■ Measurement condition for a data logger through SCADA METEO or for WEC data
such as wind direction and wind speed
In each command line, these events can be concatenated by means of AND to trigger an
action.

WARNING
Incorrect configuration!
For safety reasons, only ENERCON staff are allowed to make the necessary
modifications to the configuration file.
Example use cases for the event trigger control system:
■ Noise protection
■ Close proximity to buildings

3.6 Control of individual systems in an ENERCON wind energy converter

Customers may only control individual systems in an ENERCON wind energy

converter after having been given appropriate access by ENERCON. For more
information, please contact your ENERCON sales representative or the
ENERCON Service Center.

3.6.1 Blade heating system control

The optional ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC interface of the ENERCON SCADA Server
and ENERCON SCADA Remote 3 make it possible to actively control the blade heating
system built into the ENERCON wind energy converters.
1)
The following control operations can be performed while the WEC is running or standing
still:
■ Suppress automatic mode of the blade heating system (suppress/abort heating opera-
tion)
■ Switch on heating operation manually (if automatic mode is suppressed)
■ Start heating operation for pre-defined duration (WEC parameter 1317)
■ Retrieve current control status
1)
Direct control of the blade heating system in a running wind energy converter is only
possible if the WEC parameters have been set accordingly; see “Blade heating system
parameters” document (D0167474).

3.6.2 Controlling the ice warning light

The optional ENERCON SCADA PDI-OPC interface of the ENERCON SCADA Server
and ENERCON SCADA Remote 3 make it possible to actively control the optional ice
warning light built into an ENERCON wind farm.
The following control operations can be performed:
■ Switch on ice warning light
1)
■ Switch off ice warning light
■ Retrieve current status of ice detection system
1)
After being switched on, regardless of the controlling system, the lice warning light re-
mains on for at least 20 minutes. The ice warning light can only be switched off if no other
wind energy converter system (e.g. ice detection system) is generating a signal for switch-
ing on the ice warning light.
The wind energy converter does not provide the status of the ice warning light. Only the
ice detection system status is sent to ENERCON SCADA.
For more detailed information on the optional ice warning light, see the “ENERCON wind
energy converter ice warning light” document (D0353070).

3.8 ENERCON SCADA Power Consumption Management

ENERCON SCADA Power Consumption Management (PCM) allows the power consump-
tion of ENERCON wind energy converters to be restricted to a configurable limit at the
point of common coupling.
This is especially useful for systems such as the blade heating and generator drying sys-
tems as these have a high energy demand and are often only used when the WEC is at a
standstill, most often for the entire wind farm, and consume considerable levels of power
at the point of common coupling.
The PCM calculates the power available for consumption by the WECs in cycles. This
power equals the difference between the specified maximum power consumption (cus-
tomer/grid operator setpoint) and the current power consumption at the point of common
coupling. The current power consumption can be determined either by a virtual point of
common coupling or by means of an optional measured data acquisition (FCU or RTU-C).
Power is provided to the WECs in successive cycles. If the WEC requires power and if
enough power is available, power is reserved and consumed by the WEC. The power
available to the remaining WECs is reduced by the reserved amount.
The power demand of a WEC can be made up of the power required by several systems
included in the WEC. The WEC reserves power according to systems, i.e. if the power
available to the WEC is only sufficient for one out of two systems, the WEC only reserves
power for this system.
This behaviour and cyclic processing reduce the power consumption at the point of com-
mon coupling.
The PCM is run as a process on the ENERCON SCADA Server and as part of the control
system software of the ENERCON wind energy converters.
No additional hardware is needed.
