INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE


Course Description
This course gives overview to what computer science is, the role and expectation of computer
scientist. The course will also discuss history computer science and their
generations.Information processing and Information system and history of Internet. The
computer hardware, software, operating system and program development would be
discussed.

Course Justification
The goal of this course is to expose students to the fundamentals of computer science and get
prepared for the expectation of the industry. Students will also be exposed to program
development.

Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to
 have basic understanding of what is computer science.
 know the disction between hardware and software.

 know the importance of operating system in computer science.
 Know data and information processing mehthods.
 Know the relevance of information system in an organization.
 expose to programming skills.

Course Content
Survey of computers and information processing and their roles in society. This course
introduces a historical perspective of computing hardware, software, information systems and
human resources and explore their integration and application in business and other segments
of the society. Internet and online resources, browsers and search engine.

WEEK 1: What is Computer Science?
Objectives: At the end of the lecture, students should be able to:
(i) know what is computer science.
(ii) function of computer scienctist.

First Hour:Definition and overview of computer science.
Second Hour:Overview of computer science.
Study Questions:
1. What is computer science.
2. Explain the roles of computer scientist.

WEEK 2: History of computer science and their generations


Objectives: At the end of the lecture, students should be able to
(i) understand the history of computer science.
(ii) understand different generations of computer development.

Description:
First Hour:The history of computer science.
Second Hour: Generations of computer development.

WEEK 3: Hardware
Objectives: At the end of the lecture, students should:
(i) be able to identify different types of computer hardware.
(ii) know the function of each component of computer hardware.
(iii) know the classification of computer hardware.

First Hour:Definition and structural composition of computer hardware.
Second Hour:Classification of computer hardware.

First Hour: Definition of internet, history and characteristics of Internet.
Second Hour: The roles of Internet in Business organization.

WEEK 10-11: Algorithm and Pseudocode

(ii) Know the meaning and importance of pseudocode in programming.

First Hour: Explanation of algorithm with examples.
Second Hour: Explanation of pseudocode with examples.
