HISTORY OF THE GAME

Bandy is a winter sport and ball sport played by two teams wearing ice skates on a large ice
surface (either indoors or outdoors) while using sticks to direct a ball into the opposing
team’s goal. Bandy is a form of hockey with origins in England in 1882. It is played on a
larger ice surface called a bandy field or rink. Sweden and Russia are the strongest nations in
both men’s and women’s competitions. The International Olympic Committee (IOC)
recognized bandy as a sport in 2001. The FIB claims that bandy is the world’s second-most
participated winter sport after ice hockey, but the number of participants is not recorded.

BASIC RULES OF THE GAME

MATCH DURATION
The match consists of two halves of 45-minutes and a 15-minute half-time break and
if required, over time. The end of the match is called full-time.

BALL RULES
Only the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms, and it can
be done only within the penalty area in front of their own goal.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Substitutions can take place many times during a match and can be performed without
informing the referee. However, the substitute must not enter the field before the out-
going player has left it otherwise, a penalty (a five-minute ban) may be imposed on
him/her.

WARNINGS AND PENALTIES

A ten-minute penalty may be imposed on a player by showing him/her a blue card
who misbehaves with other players, blocks the ball or attacks the opponents violently.
If a player is penalized three times, it will be a personal penalty means the player can
no longer play that match. A substitute can replace him/her after 5-10 minutes. There
is also a full-game penalty indicated by a red card which is imposed for using abusive
language or directly attacking an opponent.

shot, etc.

HOW IT IS BEING PLAYED

The aim of Bandy is to score goals by hitting an orange or pink ball the approximate size of a
tennis ball into the opposing team’s net with a curved stick four feet in length. Depending on
how the player strikes the ball with the stick, he or she can put a spin on the ball, making it
curve, knuckle or dive.
