Vowel

Definition:
A speech sound in which the mouth is open, and the tongue is not touching the top
of the mouth, the teeth etc., so that the flow of air is not limited.
Or: A speech sound made without any friction.

Vowels are divided into two parts:


1. Monophthongs 2. Diphthongs

Monophthongs Diphthongs

Vowel that has a single perceived When a vowel is formed by


auditory quality. the combination of two vowel
sounds.
Short vowels:
/ ɪ/ - fit, pick, difficult
/e/ - pet, sent, attention /aɪ/ - cry, my, eye, lime,
/æ/ - pat, flat, family Bright
/ʌ/ - cut, jump, cover /eɪ/ - bake, rain, lay, break,
/ʊ/ - put, book, cushion eight
/ɒ/ - pot, dog, hospital /au/ - go, slow, loan, though
/ə/ - about, system, complete /au/ - cow, now, brown, down
/aʊ/ - pair, lair, stare, care,
Long vowels: bear
/Iː/ week, feet, media /ɪə/ - career, here, near, year
/ɑː/ hard, park, article /ɔɪ/ - boy, toy, boil, foil
/ɔː/ fork, work, August /ʊə/ - tour, insure, Lure
/3ː/ heard, word, surface
/uː/ boot, group, beautiful
