World AIDS Day 2023: What is L&T doing for people living with HIV?
LET COMMUNITIES LEAD!
Today on 1 December, WHO, together with communities and partners, commemorates World AIDS
Day 2023 under the theme ‘Let communities lead’. World AIDS Day is an opportunity to reflect on
the progress made to date, raise awareness about the challenges that remain to achieve the goals of
ending AIDS by 2030, and mobilize all stakeholders to jointly redouble efforts to ensure the success
of the HIV response.
Communities living with, and affected by, HIV and networks of people from key populations and
youth leaders have been, and continue to be, essential for progress in the HIV response. They
provide essential prevention, testing, & treatment support services, build trust, generate innovative
solutions, promote health, monitor the implementation of policies & programmes, and hold
providers accountable.
The world can end AIDS with communities leading the way. That is why the theme for World AIDS
Day this year is ‘Let communities lead’, and much more than a celebration of the achievements of
communities, it is a call to action to enable and support communities in their leadership roles.
What is L&T doing for people who are diagnosed with HIV?
L&T is one of the first few companies which responded to HIV/AIDS in India as early as 1985. It
launched AIDS awareness initiatives at Powai from 1985 to 1997 by collaborating with Dilip Kumar
Tyagi Trust (DKT), an NGO, and thereafter till date with Mumbai District AIDS Control Society
(MDACS) and Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society (MSACS).
L&T started the Voluntary Counseling and Testing Centre (VCTC) at the L&T Community Health
Centre, Andheri, in collaboration with MDACS in November 2003. In September 2009, we started
giving medicines – Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART). It was implemented through a public–private
partnership approach to help the government in strengthening treatment services of HIV/AIDS.
Due to the rising number of patients, the ART services at the Andheri Health Centre were shifted to
another location - Koldongri in Andheri, Mumbai, on 1 December 2014. It is run in association with
the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in order to cater to a large number of
patients.
Every year, almost 2,000 tests are conducted along with HIV pretest and post-test counseling as per
NACO’s guidelines through a trained counsellor. A total of 1,359 people living with HIV are being
treated holistically at our centre, which includes free medicines up to 2nd line of treatment, free
laboratory investigations including CD4 cell counts, and social counselling & consultation from an
expert physician for complicated cases.
I am happy to inform that our ART Centre has been ranked first among all 10 government and
private ART centres in Mumbai for its quality of services and adherence to government protocols.
A strict evaluation based on various parameters including percentage of people who are lost in
follow-up, timely starting of treatment for newly diagnosed persons, number of
complications/referrals, medical record management, etc.
Let us celebrate and recognize the invaluable contributions of communities in leading the response
to HIV!
