Developments
Football began with ancient civilizations of
China, Greece, and Rome as a sport that
mimicked warfare, with the intention of
scoring by kicking or throwing a ball over a

Rules
During the 19th century, Football ourished
in Europe with the rst standardized rules
being codi ed in 1863 by The Football
Association in England. The modern game

The Modern Era of Football
The growth of professionalism in the sport
can be traced back to the industrial
revolution; when football clubs were
established for the entertainment of
working-class people. This period saw the
birth of professional leagues,
commercialization of the sport, player
contracts and international competitions -
all of which helped shape Football into the
most global and viewed sport of its time.
5. Evolution of
Leagues and
Competitions
The evolution of football has seen multiple
leagues, federations and competitions
spring up over the years. Professional
Leagues such as the EPL, LaLiga,
Bundesliga and others have created some
of the most historic and prestigious
sporting rivalries in the sport’s history.
Additionally, prominent international
tournaments such as the UEFA Champions
League, FIFA World Cup, and Copa America
have allowed players to compete on the
