A long time a go, in East Java there was a
kingdom Ied by Prabu Merak. He had a
handsome prince named Raden Banterang. Their
kingdom had a battle with Klungkung Kingdom.
One day, Banterang was hunting with his
guards when he met a very beautiful woman.
Although it was strange to find a beautiful
women in the jungle, he asked her, “who are
you, lady?”
The lady told him that she is the
daughter of klungkung king who ran away to the
jungle to escape from the battle. She was very
sad when her father died in the battlr. Banterang
was quite shocked in hearing this, because his
father ‘Prabu Merak’ was the king who killed the
women’s father.
Nonetheless, Banterang fell in love with
her and took the women to be his wife. Later the
women’s brother found out the merriage. He
geave a sister a keris and asked her to kill
Banterang. Banterang found the keris on his bed.
He thought that his wife would kill him. However
it was the princess brother who put the keris on
the bed. The princess and Bnaterang then had a
quarrel. In her despirate attempt to prove her
innocence, the princess jump into a river.
Since then, the river is knoen
Banyuwangi. “Banyu” means water and “wangi”
means fragrant. The river’s name reflects the
princess honesty.

Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, there was a fisherman
who lived with his wife and their son in a village
in West Sumatra. Their son was called Malin
Kundang. They were very poor but they loved
each other very much.
One day, Malin Kundang told his mother
that he would go to town and work there. At
first, his mother did not allow him but finally she
let him go with tears.
Malin Kundang worked hard in a big
town and in a short time he became a rich man.
However, he completly forgot his poor old
mother.
Some years later, he sailed to a harbour
near his village. When his mother heard about
this news she came to meet him. Malin Kundang
pretended not to know her. She said, “Oh, God! I
know he is my son. But why has he turned so
wicked? Please, God. Don’t let his wickedness
continue. Punish him as you wish!”
The next day, Malin Kundang left
harbour. The sky was clear and the wind was
blowing peacefully. But as soon as the ship was
in the open sea, the skies suddenly became dark
and storms came with a terrible force.
Malin Kundang was terrified and cried,
“Mother, forgive me. I have a god, I realize what
a deadly since I have committed against my
mother. Please, forgive me!
But, this time, there was no forgiveness.
The ship capsized and turned into a great rock.

The Legend of Prambanan
One day, there was a beautiful girl. Her
name was Roro Jonggrang. Her beauty was so
famous around the country. Every man wanted
to marry her. One of them was Bandung
Bondowoso. He was young man with a
supranatural power. Roro Jonggrang agreed to
marry him with one condition. He had to build
one thousand temples during one night.
Helped by the devils, Bandung
Bondowoso build the temple. Passing the
midnight, his work was nearly finished. Roro
Jonggrang woke the girls in the village up and
ordered them to grind the rice. The sound made
the roosters crow. They thought that it had been
already dawn.
Bandung Bondowoso got frustrated
because he failed to complete the temple.
Because of his anger, he curse Roro Jonggrang to
be a statue. This statue complete the number of
temples, that was one thousand temples, like
what was requested by Roro Jonggrang.

In 1982, I died from terminal cancer. My
condition was non-operable. I chose not to have
chemotherapy. I was given six to eight months to
live. Before this time, I had become increasingly
despondent over the nuclear crisis, the ecology
crisis, and so forth. I came to believe that nature
had made a mistake that we were probably a
cancerous organism on the planet. And that is
what eventually killed me.
Before my near-death experience, I tried

A long time ago lived a husband and a
wife. They were poor and they did not have any
children yet. Days and nights they prayed to God.
Their dream came true! The wife was
pregnant.
However, they were surprised when they saw
the baby. He was a big as a little finger.
“well, I will name him Kelingking,” said
the husband. Kelingking means little finger.
Time passed by and Kelingking ate like
adults. He ate much food. And that made his
parent really worried.
“I cannot hold it anymore. I want to put
Kelingking in the jungle. In the morning,
Kelingking and his father went to the jungle.
When they arrived, the father asked Kelingking
to cut down a very big tree. The father thought
that Kelingking could not cut down the big tree.
The father was sure that Kelingking would be lost
in the jungle. But he was wrong. In the morning,
Kelingking suddenly showed up i front of the
house.
“Father, where do you want me to put
this big tree?” asked Kelingking.
The father was surprised. He asked
Kelingking to put the tree in the backyard. He
then had another idea.
“Kelingking, let’s go to the mountain,”
Kelingking was obidient kid. He followed his
father to go to the mountain. When they arrived,
his father pointed a big stone. “I want you to
bring that big stone to our house,” asked the
father, then the father immediately ran home. At
night, when the father was sleeping, suddenly he
heard Kelingking’s voice.
“Father, I’m home. Where do you want
meto put this big stone?” This time Kelingking’s
father realized his mistakes. It was true that
Kelingking’s body was small and he ate much
food.
But he was a nice kid and he great
power. With that power, they could get a job
and had a lot of money. The father then
