ANSWER-KEY
5) Write the following statement in the form of an equation: The difference of three times x and 10
is 13.
(a) 3x - 10 = 13 (b) 3x + 10 = 13 (c) 3x + 13 = 10 (d) 3 – 10x = 13
7) Shweta’s mother’s age is 7 years more than four times Shweta’s age. Shweta’s mother’s age
is 55 years old. Set up an equation to find Shweta’s age.
9) The sum of two consecutive odd numbers is 40. The smaller one is ______________.
10) Which of the following equations cannot be formed using the equation v = 7?
(a) 2v + 1 = 15 (b) 7v – 1 = 50 (c) v – 3 = 4 (d) v ÷ 1 = 7
(a) The value of the variable which makes the equations a true statement is called the solution of
the equation.
(b) Any term of an equation may be taken from one side to the other with a change in its sign. This
is called transposing method.
(c) An equation is a statement of equality which contains one or more unknown variables.
Answer:
(b) A number divided by 5 gives seven less than twice the number.
5. Solve:
a) 3(y – 2) = – 3
Solution:
3(y – 2) = – 3
⇒ 3y – 6 = – 3 (Removing the brackets)
⇒ 3y = 3
⇒y=1
Answer:
3q – 4 = 20
3q = 24
q=8
𝒙+𝟏
c) = −𝟐
𝟑
Answer:
𝑥 + 1 = -6
𝑥 = -7
Solution:
Let the breadth of the rectangle be x cm.
its length = 2x
Perimeter = 2 (length + breadth)
60 = 2(2x + x)
= 2 × 3x
= 6x
6x = 60
⇒ x = 10
Thus the required breadth = 10 cm
and the length = 10 × 2 = 20 cm.
b) Seven times a number is 12 less than thirteen times the same number. Find the number.
Solution:
Let the required number be x.
7x = 13x – 12
⇒ 7x – 13x = -12 (Transposing 13x to LHS)
⇒ -6x = -12
⇒x=2
Thus, the required number is 2.
Solution:
Let the required number be x
𝑥
−3=2
3
𝑥
=5
3
𝑥 =3×5
𝑥 = 15
Solution:
Let the required number be x
𝑥 𝑥
− =4
3 6
2𝑥 𝑥
− =4
6 6
2𝑥 − 𝑥
=4
6
𝑥 =6×4
𝒙 = 𝟐𝟒
e) Each of the 2 equal sides of an isosceles triangle is twice as large as the third side. If the
perimeter of the triangle is 30 cm, find the length of each side of the triangle.
Solution:
Let the length of the third side be x cm.
Each equal side = 2x cm.
As per the condition of the question, we have
Perimeter = x + 2x + 2x = 30
⇒ 5x = 30
⇒x=6
Thus, the third side of the triangle = 6 cm
and other two equal sides are 2 × 6 = 12 cm each
Solution:
Let the smaller number be 𝑥
78 – 𝑥 = 25
𝑥 = 78 − 25
𝑥 = 53
h) In an isosceles triangle base angles are equal if the vertex angle is 50°. What are base angles?
i) If Manvita’s age is half year less than the thirteen times of her father’s age. Find her age if her
father’s age is 32 years.
