Lesson 01

Should kids be given

a regular allowance?
Junior Debate Book 03

Let’s meet Kimberly!

Kimberly got her allowance today. She has been waiting for it all
month. She has been dying to get her hands on this cute pair of shoes that
she saw at the mall. Now, she has the money for it. Kimberly called her best
friend, Lisa and asked her to come shopping with her. Lisa said she would if
dinner would be on Kimberly. The latter agreed. It’s her allowance day after
all. The two friends went around the mall all day. They kept buying snacks
and drinks and they were having so much fun. Kimberly saw this beautiful
pair of earrings and she just couldn’t resist so she bought them as well. The
friends had dinner at a trendy restaurant and had ice cream for dessert. It’s
almost time to go home so Kimberly led the way to buy the pair of shoes she
went to the mall for. She checked her wallet to count how much money she
had left. She was so astounded to see that she only had enough for a bus
ride home. Kimberly shrugged her shoulders. She would just buy the shoes
next month. Do you think Kimberly spent her allowance well?

Should kids be given
a regular allowance?
Junior Debate Book 03

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!!

Go Daisy!
I agree.

I think it’s good for kids like me to get an allowance. There

are some things I need for school and there are some items
like clothes, books and food that I want to buy. I can’t go
running to my parents all the time if I need something. They
are not with me every second and most of the time, it’s just
easier if I have some cash on hand. We also have to think
of emergencies. It would be good to have money in my
pocket in unexpected circumstances. It’s better to be safe
all the time.

“ Go Thomas!
I agree.

I would think that it’s infinitely better if there is trust

between my parents and me. An allowance might not be
such a big deal but kids should have the opportunity to
develop their personalities and character. Having a regular
allowance means that we can practice being smart with
money that would help us in the future. If parents would
avoid giving us tasks and ways to become responsible
just because they are afraid that we would make mistakes,
then, we would never be able to learn and grow.

Lesson 01

Junior Debate Book 03

Go Reese!
I disagree.

Kids would never learn the value of money if things are

just handed to them. As early as now, we must learn that
money doesn’t grow on trees. We have to work hard for
what we need and want. Our parents would not provide
for us forever. In little ways, we must learn how to earn the
things that we want to have.

“ Go Charles!
I disagree.

I’ve seen it plenty of times. My friends just help out in

their homes if they would get an allowance in exchange
for doing chores. I believe that this is sending the wrong
message to kids. They just do the right things if there
is something in it for them. They think that money is
everything and they fail to appreciate the simplest and
most beautiful things about life.

It is a basic lesson on managing their ___________ and habits. On the other
hand, there is also an advantage in giving a child pocket money only when
they need something or they ask for it. This would give an opportunity for
parents to discuss and explain the importance of ____________ spending to
children. In other families, some parents give an allowance to their kids when

Go Emilia!
I agree.

I keep a diary where I express my thoughts and feelings.

It’s a safe place for me. I can reflect on daily circumstances
and I can clear my head through writing. The only way I can
do this is through the knowledge that everything I write is
for my eyes only. It is completely unacceptable for other
people to read my diary and that includes my parents. I
understand that they have their own reasons in wanting to
know more about my life. That’s what conversations are for.
You only need to talk to me.

“ Go Christian!
I agree.

All people have their own thoughts and opinions. Some of

them, including kids, may not be comfortable in sharing
such. That’s why they write in journals. If a parent reads
his or her kid’s journal, the latter will be discouraged in
letting his or her feelings out. The same goes for private
messages to friends. Children also need a healthy outlet
for their emotions. Let’s not take that away from them.

Go Cora!

Do we really tell our parents everything? Certainly not.

We can’t blame them if they have to resort to some
ways in order to protect us. Let’s keep in mind that their
intentions are always good. They need to know what’s
going in our lives in order to take care of us. There are
some children who open up to their parents and have deep
and meaningful conversations with them. However, it’s not
the same for everyone. Parents know what is best for their
children. Based on their kid’s attitude, parents may put
safety first over privacy.

“ Go Landon!
I disagree.

You only need to turn the news on and you can see the
numerous dangers in our society. It’s in our parents’ nature
to protect us from all the scary things out there. They just
want to make sure that we are safe, healthy and happy.
Let’s admit it. There are some of us who act irrationally
at times. It’s up to our parents to recognize signs that it’s
time to put privacy aside and focus on keeping the child
out of harm’s way.

Suspension is not just about the person who cheated.

It’s also about the other students. It would be a reminder

Students caught cheating might lose faith in the system.

They might lose their motivation if they are not allowed
to go to school and study with their peers. They are still

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!!

Go Clara!
I agree.

In school, I feel that the students’ voices are often ignored.

School officials often regard our opinions as immature
and ridiculous. I think everyone forgets that we are the
ones who spend hours every single day with our teachers.
We know their teaching style and we can recognize
their attitude towards their profession. They shouldn’t
dismiss what we have to say right away. Our words should
carry a lot of weight because we are the ones ultimately
benefitting or suffering from our teachers’ performance in
class.

“ Go Jeremiah!
I agree.

The goal of evaluations is not to put teachers down. It’s

an honest assessment that can improve the students’
learning environment. The education of children is too
important to leave it to chance. If students give a teacher
a low rating, it doesn’t mean that the teacher is going
to get fired. However, it’s something to look into and be
considered by the proper officials. On the other hand, the
teachers who are also great in their job deserve to know
that they are appreciated. It’s a good motivation for them
to keep up the good work.

What do we know about evaluations? We are not trained

styles and we like teachers who are more suited to
our personality. I hate to lose teachers just because of
inexperience and lack of knowledge. The students may
mean well but they just might not be the best people to do
the evaluation.

“ Go Robert!
I disagree.

We cannot deny that there would always be students

who would use the evaluation as a way to get back at
their teachers. Some students are not mature enough to
give their honest opinion. Yes, I agree that there are many
students who can give an effective evaluation. However,

Let’s meet Nicholas!

It’s lunch time! Nicholas went outside to enjoy his lunch. He

sat on the grassy lawn and opened his lunch box. His mom packed
it for him and he’s excited to find out what’s in it. First, he took out
the rice. Nicholas loves his rice. He then took out some egg rolls
and a couple of sausages. His mom didn’t forget that Nicholas likes
something warm with his lunch so she also included mushroom
soup in his lunch box. Of course, Nicholas was also expecting some
dessert. He was glad to see grapes and berries in a plastic bag.
His lunch is complete. He started eating. Nicholas was sure that he

I would rather bring a lunch box to school. That way, I

can feel confident that what I’m eating is clean and safe.
I also have a lot of allergies. I wouldn’t know what kind of
ingredients they put in the lunches at school. My mother
knows everything that I have to avoid so it’s much safer for
me to have a lunch prepared at home.

“ Go Theodore!
I agree.

My mom already knows what I like and what is good for

me. I like bringing a packed lunch to school. It’s fun to be
surprised at what my mom prepares for me each day. It’s
a good way to feel connected to her and it’s nice to think
about her when I’m in school. I know that she puts a lot
of care and thought in preparing my meals so I’m always

It is best for kids to just buy their lunch in school. We would

have more choices and our food would still be warm and
appetizing when we start eating. Schools care about the
health of the students so there’s no cause for worry. There
are standards and protocols that lunch ladies have to
follow so we can be assured of the quality of the food. It’s
also easier for my parents because I know that they are
already busy with work. This is just one thing that I can take
off their plate.

“ Go Ezra!
I disagree.

I have a lot of things to bring to school every day. My

bag is getting too heavy with all the books, notebooks,
gadgets and supplies that I have to carry every day. It’s
just more convenient to buy lunch at school. I wouldn’t
need to carry a lunch box with me. It’s also good for me
to eat with my friends and have the same lunch. It’s a nice
way to bond with the people I spend most of my day with.

Talent is useless without hard work. A person may be a

genius but if he sits all day and never does anything, what
will become of that talent? Even talented people still need
to practice and work hard or their abilities would just go to
waste. Nothing magically appears out of thin air. If people
work hard and persevere, they can certainly achieve
success.

“ Go David!

Not everyone is born a genius. However, millions of

people are successful in this world. That is the result of
hard work. Not everything comes easy for everyone but

It’s easier for talented people to succeed. You must have

own abilities and skills. The levels would vary but we all
start out at the same place. We have something that we
know or can do well. That’s what we need to focus on in
order to become excellent.

“ Go Colton!
I disagree.

If a person is talented, he or she wouldn’t need that much

effort in order to succeed. Why wouldn’t that person try
then? Most talented people don’t like showing off their
abilities and that’s why they may not seem successful
in the eyes of others. However, they can do many great
things that we might not even know about. It just depends
on how they define success for themselves.

She got it correctly and the class let out a collective sigh of relief. The teacher

Go Audrina!
I agree.

It’s a fact that it’s extremely difficult for a teacher to manage

a large number of students in one class. It doesn’t involve
the lectures alone. There are exam papers to check, reports
to be read, lesson plans to be created and so much more.
Teachers are only humans and they would definitely get
tired. When they do, the students may suffer because their
teacher can’t give more effort because of an unreasonably
heavy workload.

“ Go Brody!
I agree.

It’s better to be in a class with fewer students. The teacher

can get to know the students on a more personal level.
She can give the proper attention to what a specific
student needs and what the strengths of other students
are. It would also be easier to track the progress of each
student. Teachers can also take advantage of one-on-one
interactions that would motivate the students to do their
best in their studies.

Class size shouldn’t matter. Whether it’s a big or small

class, the development of the students would depend on
the teacher. Yes, it would be more difficult to manage many
students. Sure, it would mean a heavier workload if it’s a
big class. “Harder” doesn’t mean it’s impossible. There’s
always room for adjustment and it’s up to the teacher to
match her style to what the students need.

“ Go Declan!
I disagree.

Great teachers can teach any student under any

circumstance. Therefore, schools must focus on the
competency of the teachers and not the class size. If
a teacher has the skills and knowledge to help kids
develop, the number of students wouldn’t matter. Good
teachers are trained to impart knowledge without

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!!

Go Peyton!
I agree.

It’s not bad to skip school sometimes. It might actually be

helpful in some ways. Kids are under a lot of stress every
day. It’s not even limited to weekdays. Many students still
prepare for exams or attend academies on weekends.
Students just don’t have enough time to rest or unwind.
That’s why it’s nice to blow off some steam once in a while.
We can come back to school with a fresh perspective and
renewed motivation.

“ Go Sawyer!
I agree.

I think that there are too many rules for kids nowadays.
I get that times are changing and adults want us to
be more careful but it’s undeniable that it sometimes
suffocates and overwhelms us. Once in a while, we get
the urge to flee and get as far away as we can. However,
there are some kids who don’t handle the stress very well.
They can hurt themselves and sometimes fall into a pit
of depression. Sometimes, a small and harmless thing
like skipping school can actually help prevent a worse
situation.

Go Brooke!
I disagree.

You cannot solve a problem with another problem. Yes,

students are often under a lot of stress and that’s a
problem. There are many ways to deal with school and
responsibilities without resorting to skipping school. If
someone gets caught doing such, they would surely be
punished and their parents would be so disappointed in
them. This would bring bigger trouble than stress. That’s
why we should know how to handle things the right way.

“ Go Vincent!
I disagree.

It’s a crucial time for all students. This is the time when we
need to prepare for the future. If we skip school and we
miss a day, we would fall behind. We would need to catch
up. That cycle would continue. We won’t be able to get
caught up without putting too much stress on ourselves.
Skipping school may be fun for a moment but it’s not a
wise decision. We shouldn’t lose sight of our goals right
now.

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!!

Go Jasmine!
I agree.

I’m a high school student and I understand that this is an

important part of my life. However, I feel that everyone is
putting too much pressure on us. We can’t help but get
upset and we lose our motivation. We don’t even have a
chance to spend time with our friends before going our
separate ways in college. It’s just all too much and I think
that everyone could benefit more if expectations would be
more relaxed.

“ Go Tyler!
I agree.

It’s good to be prepared for the future. You know what

else is good? Sleep. High school students are humans
too. Our bodies have limits. We need to listen to ourselves
sometimes and recognize what we need in order to
function well. People should just get off our backs. We got
this. It’s our life. Stop telling us what we can and cannot
do.

Lesson 09

Go Taylor!
I disagree.

Students just complain a lot. It’s not the work that is

the problem. It’s the way we manage time and plan our
activities. If we continue being responsible, we wouldn’t
fall behind and feel overwhelmed. It’s all about the right
approach. Many students procrastinate and then complain
if they have too much work. We all just need to grow up.

“ Go Gavin!
I disagree.

We are in high school and we can expect a lot of late

nights and busy schedules. We can also look forward to
a lot of extracurricular activities and school events. It’s a
period that everyone has to go through. It’s up to students
on how to handle these responsibilities. They don’t need
to get overwhelmed if they are prepared, organized and
resourceful.

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!!

Go Ashley!
I agree.

Social media is all about self-expression. Why would we

limit that by opposing a “Dislike” button on Facebook?
It’s good to give some people options in expressing their
thoughts. Sometimes, people become more honest with
their emotions on social media than anywhere else. This
has to be encouraged. It’s nothing to be scared of or
embarrassed about.

“ Go Cole!
I agree.

There are other social media sites with the “Dislike” button
in one form or another. If Facebook would choose to
update their own product, then so be it. We have nothing
to be afraid of. We need to support changes and progress
in society. This may just be a simple thing for some people
but the effects on development may be felt after many
years.

Why do we insist on adding negativity in our lives? If we

don’t have something good to say then we shouldn’t say
anything. It’s the same on Facebook. It is just another form
of communication. If we have negative reactions about
something or other, we should just keep it to ourselves.

Go Ivan!
I disagree.

If we have a “Dislike” button, it’s just another ammunition

for the cyber bullies out there. We don’t need to make
people feel bad about their posts. We can just ignore
photos or status updates that we don’t like. We don’t need
to tell the world that we don’t like them.
