VICTAULIC VORTEX™ 500 SYSTEM ACTIVE RELEASE MANIFOLD

The Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System Active Release Manifold is comprised of a multi-cylinder assembly, interconnected hoses, a common manifold,
and release solenoid(s). The manifold is connected to a Victaulic Vortex™ Fluid Panel, which contains the ARV. The ARV maintains constant flow of
nitrogen as the cylinders decrease in pressure.
A release signal from the agent-releasing FACP is routed through the Fluid Panel. The signal is then sent to the primary solenoid release assembly.
The primary solenoid release assembly allows pressure from the primary cylinder into the connected pilot line, which provides a conduit for the
pressure to enter the upper chambers of the remaining cylinder valves. When the upper chamber becomes pressurized, the cylinder valve opens, as
indicated by the upward movement of the valve position indicator located on top of the cylinder valves. The open cylinder valves allow nitrogen gas
to pressurize the manifold. The Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System may be designed to begin discharge upon pressure being detected at the input to the
panel, or upon application of a 24V release signal (refer to panel description). When nitrogen flow starts, a downstream pressure transducer senses
pressure within the system plumbing. The pressure transducer provides a continuous signal to the ARV during actuation to maintain constant system
pressure.

the manifold in the event a nitrogen discharge hose is disconnected.
Although flow direction is marked, the restricting valve has a ½-inch
BSPT inlet and a ¾-inch NPT outlet to prevent reverse installation.

I-VORTEX.500_20 REV_B
I-VORTEX.500 / Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System / General Design, Installation and Maintenance Manual

SYSTEM DESIGN
The Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System is pre-engineered for total flooding applications. The discharge quantities of hybrid media are based on a
volumetric calculation for the hazard and are set by the number and size of the nitrogen cylinders included in the system.
Generally, system design should start with a review of the type of application, which is based on the hazard. Consult with the AHJ to verify suitability
of the system according to the application. Refer to the following page for calculations.

WARNING
The Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System SHALL NOT be used in areas that contain the following materials, unless approved by the AHJ:
• Chemicals or mixtures of chemicals, such as cellulose nitrate and gun powder, that are capable of rapid oxidation in the absence of air
• Reactive metals, such as lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, titanium, zirconium, uranium, and plutonium
• Metal hydrides
• Chemicals, such as certain organic peroxides or hydrazine, that are capable of undergoing autothermal decomposition
Failure to follow these instructions could result in death or serious personal injury and property damage.

ACCEPTABLE APPLICATIONS
System Designs for Total Flooding Class A Surface Fire Applications – Limited to applications containing Class A materials where combustibility
is low, quantities of combustibles are low-to-moderate, and fires with low-to-moderate heat release rates are expected. These spaces are typically
able to be classified as Light Hazard or Ordinary Hazard 1. Examples include data centers, museums, cleanrooms, control rooms, cable trays, cable
spreading rooms, and switch gear rooms. Early detection systems should be considered for use in these applications. Hybrid flooding factors for
these designs were determined by evaluating extinguishment performance with wood, PMMA, polypropylene, and ABS materials. Generally, 5/8 -inch
hybrid emitters are preferred for Series 954 Total Flooding Class A Surfaces Fires. Smaller hybrid emitters are available for applications where a lower
discharge rate is required to meet the recommended discharge times in small enclosures.

voltages lower than 480VAC, follow the recommendations for the de-energized fuels. Conditions for shutdown of energized equipment is at the
discretion of the AHJ and applicable codes and standards.
FM Approved Designs – If an FM Approved extinguishing system is required, the Victaulic Vortex™ 1000 or 2000 Systems should be specified. Refer
to the I-VORTEX.1000 or I-VORTEX.2000 System General Design, Installation, and Maintenance Manual for details regarding where these systems
may be specified.

INSTALLATION OF THE VICTAULIC VORTEX™ 500 SYSTEM RACK MODEL

WARNING
• The Victaulic Vortex 500 System assembly is top heavy and shall be secured to the wall and floor.
®

Failure to follow this instruction could result in death or serious personal injury and product damage.

The Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System rack model is shipped as several separate components that require minimal assembly: an upper rack assembly, a
lower rack assembly, nitrogen cylinders, primary kit, and secondary pilot kits(s) if required.
1. Begin by placing the lower rack assembly in its intended locaton. The lower rack assembly may be bolted to the floor.
2. Place the upper rack assembly on top of the lower rack assembly. Secure the assemblies by using the strut channel connector. It is
recommended to place the strut channel connectors on the lower rack assembly and secure with two bolts on each side. This allows the upper
rack assembly to be lowered into the strut channel connectors.
3. Fasten the assembled rack assembly securely to the floor and wall with appropriate fasteners (and in accordance with all local codes and
standards).

4. Hybrid emitters ship in a separate box and are preassembled to a reducer and 1-inch pipe. Thread the emitter preassembly into the elbows
installed at the top of the hybrid emitter's upper rack assembly. The direction of the elbow and emitter piping may be adjusted to avoid
impingement on nearby objects and to meet the emitter placement guidelines in Section III. The 1-inch hybrid emitter piping may be replaced
with a longer piece, not to exceed 18 inches/457 mm. In certain cases, it is advantageous to locate the Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System outside
the protected space and along an adjacent wall, with the emitters pointing backward through the wall and into the protected space (refer to
Section III).
5. A flexible hose is provided to complete the water tubing connection between the emitter and the factory-installed water line. Install the ¼-inch
elbow in the jacket of the emitter assembly(ies) and connect the flexible hose to the elbow and the factory-installed water tubing.

6. Apply thread sealant to the restricting valves. Install the restricting valves into the manifold. Typically, a properly tightened restricting valve will
have three to four threads visible. If this is a double-row rack being used with an odd number of cylinders, a plug shall be installed in one of the
outside holes of the manifold. Use only plugs that are rated to the appropriate pressure.

REV_B SECTION V - INSTALLATION I-VORTEX.500_35

I-VORTEX.500 / Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System / General Design, Installation and Maintenance Manual

WARNING
• All connections and bracing SHALL be installed and tightened before the manifold is pressurized and before
attempting to test or operate the system.
• Use only hoses, valves, and components provided with the Victaulic Vortex™ 500 System.

• DO NOT attempt to tighten or loosen any pressurized connections.

• During inspection and maintenance, any damaged components shall be replaced.
• Transportation and installation of compressed gas cylinders shall be performed only by individuals that have been trained on proper
handling techniques. Compressed gas cylinders contain stored energy that can discharge explosively.
• NEVER TRANSPORT COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS WITHOUT THE CYLINDER CAP INSTALLED.
• For additional safety and handling information, always reference the applicable I-VORTEX Design, Installation, and Maintenance Manual;
the local AHJ requirements; and thefollowing codes/standards:
- Code of Federal Regulation (49 CFR 171-179 and 14 CFR 103)
- OSHA 1910.101
- Compressed Gas Association (C-6-1968, C-8-1962, and P-1)
- NFPA 55
Failure to follow these instructions can cause unexpected, violent movement of compressed gas cylinders, resulting in death or serious
personal injury and property damage.

7. Install cylinders in rack. Typically, cylinders are oriented so that the discharge port is to the installer's left-hand side. It may be helpful to test fit a
discharge hose to verify that the cylinder is rotated correctly in the rack. DO NOT REMOVE PROTECTIVE CYLINDER CAPS UNTIL CYLINDERS
HAVE BEEN SECURED COMPLETELY WITH THE CYLINDER RETAINING STRAPS.
8. Install outer cylinder retaining straps to secure cylinders in rack.
9. Connect discharge hoses to cylinders and manifold. It may be necessary to rotate the manifold slightly to facilitate discharge hose installation.
NOTE: Hoses contain an o-ring seal. Verify that sealing surfaces are clean. Avoid rotating the hose when it is tightened against the sealing
surfaces. Start threads on each end of hose before tightening either end. Typically, properly tightened hoses have one to two threads visible.
10. Tighten the union at the end of the manifold.
11. Begin tightening the primary solenoid release and secondary gauge assemblies onto the cylinder valves. A single primary solenoid release
assembly can operate up to 24 cylinder valves. In multi-zone systems, or systems with large numbers of cylinders, multiple primary solenoid
release assemblies can be used. NOTE: To make hose routing easier, it is preferable to have the primary solenoid release assembly on the far
right cylinder in the group of cylinders.
12. Install the primary solenoid release assembly last, after all secondary assemblies are installed.
13. Attach the primary solenoid release assembly to the pilot release gauge port. NOTE: The primary solenoid release assembly contains wrench
flats on the inlet to prevent the assembly from rotating during tightening. DO NOT hold the assembly by the gauge or pressure switch during
tightening. The primary solenoid release assembly engages a Schrader* valve as it is tightened. When the Schrader* valve is engaged, it will take
more torque to tighten the assembly. Typically, the Schrader* valve engages with two to three threads visible and, when tigtened properly, the
assembly will have one or no threads visible.
14. Verify that all discharge hoses are tight at both ends.
15. Install the 1/4-inch BSPP pilot connection port on the rear of the cylinder valves. NOTE: To ease installation, leave this connection loose until all
pilot hoses are connected.
16. Determine pilot hose routing if multiple primary solenoid release assemblies are being used. NOTE: An 11.8-inch/300-mm length pilot hose
is provided with secondary pilot kits to connect adjacent cylinders. A 17.7-inch/450-mm length pilot hose is provided with primary pilot kits to
connect the primary solenoid release assembly to the tee on back of the cylinder valves. Longer pilot hoses are available when it is necessary
to run the primary pilot line between rows of cylinders or to adjacent cylinder racks. A 27 1/2-inch/ 700-mm length pilot hose can be used to
connect cylinders between two rows.
NOTE FOR TWO-CYLINDER ASSEMBLIES THAT CONTAIN ONE 80-LITER CYLINDER AND ONE 49-LITER CYLINDER: The 80-liter
cylinder MUST be the primary cylinder (containing the primary solenoid release assembly). In addition, the 80-liter cylinder MUST be used for
abbreviated discharge testing.
17. Rotate the maintenance switch to the “ON” position (red indicator light will be lit).

CAUTION
• During installation, nut torque will increase due to nitrogen pressure.
• Continue tightening the mounting nut until the primary pilot kit assembly is installed rigidly and does not rotate.
Failure to tighten the nut properly will cause of a loss of nitrogen, resulting in improper system operation.

18. Mount the primary pilot kit securely to the cylinder valve’s pilot release port. Tighten the mounting nut until the complete assembly is installed
rigidly and does not rotate. Inspect the entire assembly for nitrogen leaks. Connect the pilot line hose to the solenoid output, then mount the
primary solenoid coil.
