“Train Your Brain”, Creative Memory Workshop is aimed at equipping the learner with the
tools, techniques and skills required to remember more, faster, for long and with least
effort possible.
Be it students, professional, businessmen, home-makers or elderly - everyone feels this
challenge. The challenge of not being able to retain and recall something that they saw,
heard, read or experienced in near past or long back. It has become such a common issue
that Memory is taken for granted.
But it could be frustrating for many and could cost a lot too!
• Students forget answers, dates and events, formulae, spellings, technical names, maps,
facts, sequences, orders etc. And that results in lower scores after all the hard work.
• Professionals and Businessmen need to remember lists, names of clients, facts and figures,
tasks and appointments, product codes and related information.
• Home Makers forget their shopping lists, phone numbers and extensions, recipe
ingredients, their kids’ time table, who had called etc.
• And all of us time to time forget where did we keep our keys, wallet, spectacles, phone
and also it’s a challenge to remember to remember something.
• Some of us have problem of not able to forget some bad memories as well.
Creative Memory works on the fundamental laws and rules of memory. It goes against the
regular practice of only repeating lots of text and writing down everything that needs to be
remembered. Creative Memory is highly visual, extremely simple to use, and is fun-oriented.
Many of the techniques taught are used by contestants in World Memory Championship.
And it does not require you to be any genius to get started. It being simple brings out
results faster so much so that you could easily measure the improvements, the same day.
It being visual can be learnt by people of all ages with least effort. It involves multi-sensory
exercises and activities and is whole brain based. Do not give up on it, yet. You have the key
to unlock the mysteries of your memory!

BASICS OF MEMORY
Meaning of Memory:
Whatever we experience with our senses are stored as mental images and recorded in the
brain and nervous system. When these mental images are brought into focus in the present,
we call such experience as Memory. Memory is life and life is memory. Your real possession
is memory. All knowledge is but remembrance.
Necessity for Developing Memory:
The world is changing in favour of those who command knowledge. Employability increasingly
depends on the ability to learn fast and remember easily. Almost all new industries – and
the jobs it doles out – are based on information skills. The competition for knowledge-based
jobs will necessitate excellence to learning capacity, not just adequacy.
Every career change you make will require upgrading of knowledge and skills. Your learning
ability should be enough to make you a scholar in the field of your choice. Everyone needs
an excellent memory – students, speakers, doctors, lawyers, salespeople, politicians, teachers,
trainers, software engineers – even to become a Miss World, Good Memory is essential.
Memory Types:
(a) Short term memory: When we need to make a phone call to a stranger, we remember
the number till we make the call and then we forget. The waiter in a restaurant remembers
everything you’ve ordered till you pay the bill. He forgets all this immediately after you’ve
paid up and left. You can check this by going once again to the same restaurant after a few
minutes and asking the waiter to recall what you are and what the total bill was. It is certain
that he would not be able to recall.
(b) Long term memory: When we remember things for years together, it becomes
permanent – a part of our long-term memory.
Your first school, the first good friends you made and your first victory in some competition –
all these facts do not get erased for a very long time.
Similarly, at traffic signals, we remember that we need to stop when we see the red light,
get ready to move by seeing the yellow light, and actually move when the green light comes
on.
Capacity: The Brain is like a hard disc of a computer, which can accommodate any amount of
information. Hard disc has its limitation but not the Brain. There is no limit to the capacity of
the Brain. The more you remember, the more you can remember. There is no such thing as too
much memory.
Improvement:
The capacity for memory differs from person to person. We exercise our muscles and
limbs. Similarly, memory can be exercised through training. There is nothing called Good or
Bad Memory. There is only one thing called Trained or Untrained Memory. Memory is a skill.
One needs to practice the techniques that are being learnt in the workshop. Merely attending
the Memory Workshop and not practicing the techniques will not help in improving memory.
The true art of memory is the art of attention. Memory and observation go hand in
hand. You can’t remember anything you do not observe. The eyes cannot see when the mind
is absent. It is extremely difficult to observe or remember anything that you do not want to
remember. Therefore, interest and motivation are essential requisites for good memory.
You should trust your capacity for memory. The more you trust it, the more reliable and
useful it becomes. When you try to write down everything without any attempt to remember
you do not trust your memory. You don’t have the confidence in your memory. 4
WHY DO WE FORGET?
Weak Impression– not properly attending to what we wish to remember. Attention is not
there. Attention means directing mental activity towards a mental or physical object or
situation. Attention is to the mind what the power of focusing the lens is to a camera.
Disuse: Not repeating the experience to refresh the memory. Memory traces tend to decay
with the lapse of time.
Interference: Other activities we pursue after learning something interfere with our ability
to remember.
Repression: It is unconscious forgetting of painful memories known as ‘repression’. Example:
forget the appointment with a dentist and not with your girl/boyfriend. Pleasant experiences
are recalled more easily than unpleasant ones.
Shock: It is intense emotional experience of a distressing nature. Shock given for mental
illness or forgetting the past due to some injury.
Drugs: Taking a variety of medicines for various diseases may also cause poor memory. Further,
drugs like marijuana, white sugar and other similar drugs and alcohol and tobacco damage
the faculty of memory.

5
FACTORS CONTRIBUTING FOR
EFFECTIVE MEMORY
Impression:
Attending to it properly. At any given time various impressions converge upon the mind. A
selection among them should be effected by attention.
Concentration:
Attention is constantly shifting. Develop the habit of bringing our mind back every time it
wanders to other things. A quiet mind is the best guarantee of concentration. Concentration
means a stronger impression.
Habit:
Concentration is a habit, and habits are perfected by practice. We must persevere in trying to
concentrate until we succeed. Habit is as strong a force for good as for evil. We should try to
build up habits that are conducive to concentration.
Interest:
The law of interest is of paramount importance in concentration and thereby improves
memory. Things in which we are deeply interested will be remembered without conscious
effort. Throw you heart and soul into a thing. You cannot forget anything that is vital to you.
Even if you are not interested, improve your concentration by strengthening your interest.
Study any subject because you think that they are worth studying.
Relaxation:
Concentration occurs most naturally when body and mind are relaxed. Sit down in a relaxed
posture. Relax through various Meditation exercises to improve memory.
Emotional Conflict:
When emotionally upset or worried you cannot concentrate on anything. Reading disabilities
occur mostly in case of emotional difficulties. It is not lack of concentration, it is some other
problem not connected with the subject to be studied.
Repetition:
Repetition facilitates comprehension and aids memory. Repeatedly reading something over
and over again will automatically be remembered, whether you understand the meaning of
it or not.

6
THE LAWS OF MEMORY
The Law of Comprehension: The better we understand, the better we learn. Meaning material
is better retained. Learn the number-58121519222629
– 68430742861069. The first set of numbers is based on the principle of adding 3 and 4. Easy
to learn and remember, not the second one.
The Law of Spaced Learning: Learning spaced over several days is better than material amassed
on one day. Daily practice should be the rule. Driving
– one hour daily for ten days – one day ten hours – the first is the best.
The Law of Recitation: Recite to oneself or aloud at frequent intervals. Instead of re-reading,
recite to yourself what you have learnt. Interrupt your reading and mentally recapitulate the
main points. Why reading aloud?
(a) Improves pronunciation.
(b) Utilizes the ear – auditory memory.
(c) Makes it more interesting.
The Law of Over Learning: Say it over and over again to yourself silently and aloud. Adopt the
habit of frequently revising the material you have learnt. Go over your lessons time and
again.
The Law of Whole Learning: Learn the material as a whole rather than bit-by-bit. Repeat is as
a whole over and over again. Divide long passages into meaningful sections. Learning a poem
as a whole rather than one stanza at a time, adds meaning to the learning.
The Law of Confidence: Poor memory is due to telling yourself that your memory is poor. An
attitude of confidence in one’s memory tends to make it better. Rather than merely repeating
to yourself “My memory is bad”, it is better to learn by applying the various memory methods
and your confidence will slowly starts increasing. The best way to boost your confidence is to
register and reproduce random-digit numbers. Never abuse your memory by giving a bad
name. Get acquainted with your memory, and make friends with it. Treat it well and it will
serve you well.
The Law of Reintegration: We remember better if certain conditions present at the time of
learning are reinstated, remembering is enhanced. Example: Foreign language is best learned
by living in that country.

The Law of Figure and Ground: A thing is remembered better if it contrasts with its background.
Example: Words in italics and underlined are remembered better. Music in the background
may help some students.

The Law of Learning during Sleep: If memorizing is followed by sleep, the memorized material is retained
better than if further waking activity ensues. We forget less rapidly during sleep than during waking
hours. While we are asleep we do not learn other things. The lessons should be revised in the morning
before the activity of the day makes us forget a great deal of it. Work done just before sleep was 6.5
per cent superior to that performed immediately on waking.

The Law of Association: Association plays a vital role in creative memory. Mind has the tendency to
associate the new material to the old ones, which were similar. Memory is learning something new
and associating with something already we know. We must connect something NEW with OLD.

FILM CITY PLANS FACELIFT
The government-run Film City, which recently completed 15 years of existence, has
been beset with security and infrastructural problems, discouraging several film-makers from
availing of its four indoor studios and breathtaking outdoor locations, all set in a sprawling
350 acre campus in Goregaon (East).
Among other things, there have been complaints about bootlegging, the unauthorised
removal of mud by builders, even the rape of a junior artiste and a murder in the area around
Film City. Its personnel say that indeed these events took place. It was not within their premises,
but along the access road which was, until recently, used as a general thoroughfare.
Some “goonda elements” had been attempting to take over sections of the ground,
admits Mr.Govind Swarup, who took over in June as managing director of Maharashtra Film,
Stage and Cultural Development Corporation, which runs Film City. But measures are being
taken to improve the situation, he adds.
For a start, a gate manned by security guards has been put in at the point where the
access road turns away from the nearby slum development colonies and approaches Film
City. Entry into the main grounds is being restricted.
Roads leading to the nearby Aarey colony and the Borivili national park have also been blocked
with gates. This is expected to control the unfortunate tendency some filmmakers have had in
the past - to dump used plaster - of - paris and cardboard sets in the park instead of the
designated dumping ground in Malad, which is some distance away. Additional security
personnel may be hired whenever necessary, to beef up the regular guard strength of
But there is much more to be done. “After the last time we complained to the ministry of
culture, we were promised a police chowky in the area. A location was selected, even a muhurat
that was well - attended by dignitaries was conducted some six to eight months ago, but nothing
has happened since then,” says the veteran film-maker, Shakti Samanta. Female stars leaving
the place after late night shootings are particularly vulnerable to being mobbed by some of
those visiting nearby country bars, Mr.Samanta adds.
Film-maker B.R. Chopra, who was a director on the Film City board during many of its
early years, says that often the 12 make-up rooms, with their attached bathrooms are not well
maintained. He is also concerned about the fact that the enterprise has consistently registered
losses, even after the “golden years” of 1990 and 1991, when most of the studios at Film City
were booked on a long term basis by units making television extravaganzas like Chanakya,
Bharat EkKhoj and his own Mahabharat.
Mr.Swarup attributes the accumulated Rs. 2.8 Crore loss mainly to the concessional rates
offered to regional language films, and past misfortunes like the film industry strike in late
1988 when the place was completely unused.
Mr.Chopra also complains about the paucity of permanent sets on the grounds. The temple,
the gardens, the various corridors, that show up in hospital and college scenes have all been so
overused that regular filmgoers recognise them instantly. Studio manager Mr.Vithal Rathod
says that there are plans to construct a new complex with a fully air-conditioned studio, apart
from sets for a jail, court room, hospital, police station and church - all staples of India cinema.
Another studio is being created in an unused section of the existing complex.
13
Any additional infrastructure has to be planned sensitively. “Even walls or electric poles
have to be carefully placed - their presence can ruin a location completely, especially if the
production requires a period setting”, he explains.
So far, built up structures have covered only 10 acres of the available land. But already, one
section of the skyline has been ruined by the hill-top complex of the Indira Gandhi Institute of
Development Research.
The Key Points are :-

Film city, Security, Boot Legging, Goonda elements, Govind Swarup, Gate, Plaster of Paris,
Police Chowkey, Shakti Samanta, Female stars, Bathroom, 2.8 Crore Loss, New complex, Ten
Acres.

The Structure of Human brain

The human brain has two parts. A left and a right part. These two parts are connected by a
corpus callosum (Made of millions of brain fibres). The convoluted outer surface of the brain
is called cerebral cortex. This is much convoluted in human beings only and it is the basis of
human intelligence.
The brain cells are called neurons. An average brain contains about 15,00,00,00,000 (1500
Crore) neurons.
A neuron has a center called nucleus and branches called dendrites. Each neuron is connected
with many other neurons. Current scientific knowledge is that these connections are the
basis for all learning and memory.
We can imagine the brain as a huge network of connected neurons. This network is far more
complex than the complete telephone network in the world. Some scientists have calculated
that the total possible connections among neurons are more than the total number of atoms
in the whole universe.
Specialisation of Left and Right Brain :-
The left brain is the logical part. It controls speech, words, and language. It is
methodical and tends to think in step-by-step logical fashion.
The right brain is the creative part, it thinks in images and colours and it can remember
complex pictures and songs (music). It thinks in intuitive way rather than logical way.
Is it not surprising that we can recognize hundreds or thousands of songs? This fact proves
that we all have excellent memory, but we just do not know how to use it for study and
exams. These two half brains do not work like separate
departments, but in an interconnected and collaborating way. The left brain and the right
brain exchange information through the corpus callosum.
The left brain controls the right part of the body and the right brain controls the left part of
the body. The left brain is the manager, the critical thinker, the accountant etc.,
Children use both the left brain and the right brain. As a result of the emphasis on the left
brain activities in our schools, our ability to use the right brain is reduced.
You must learn to use both sides of the brain through Brain Gym Exercises
