Component Two: Description and Rationale

To learn new vocabulary words, students are placed in “hockey” teams. There is a list of 5
words that they should be trying to use throughout the week. When they use this word in work,
Description: see it in literature, etc. and they point it out to a teacher, they collect a point for their team.
The team who wins gets a reward. Once we have completed that, I will introduce some
different kinds of figurative language to the kids. I have created a worksheet for them to
complete however they would like to: groups, individually, with a partner, etc.

Vocab Hockey gives the students some initiative to learning new words. When they win, they
have the satisfaction of winning, as well as have 5 new words in their vocabulary. Instead of
Rationale: spelling this week, I opted to give the students a figurative language assignment for a change
of pace. I have noticed Mr. Mackin has started introducing figurative language into their
learning, so I thought I could take some time to teach it to them.

Attention − Point out new words for the week
Grabber − Ask who would like to be the coordinator for vocab hockey this week
− Pick teams out of a hat 10 min.
− In the last round, students get to choose what team they would like to be
on as there is not an equal number of students to a team
Description
In order for the students to play vocab hockey for the week, they need to have
and N/A
teams. This is mostly just to set up the game, rather than playing it.
Rationale
Time
Activities Allotment
Learning Go game!
Activity #1 − Now that we have identified all the vocabulary words for the week,
students play a game called the “Go Game”
− Whoever raises their hand first has a chance to define one of the words in
the list. There are 3 chances offered. Each person who defines it correctly
earns a point for their team.
3 min.
− Remember to trick them using words like GOldfish and GOpher. It keeps
them on their toes and ensures they’re paying attention. This means
whoever raises their hand will have an answer since they are paying
attention. I do not want someone raising their hand if they don’t have an
answer because that takes 1 of the 3 chances to earn points from another
students.
Learning − Ask if anyone knows what figurative language is?
Activity #2 − Tools you use in your writing to make it more interesting
− We are going to learn about 6 different kinds (write on board):
o Onomatopoeia: words that copy the sounds they describe
▪ Slam!
o Alliteration: same sound repeatedly used at the beginning of
words in a statement
▪ The dog dug a deep hole.
o Personification: giving non-humam things human qualities
15 min.
▪ The wind sang a tune.
o Hyperbole: an over exaggeration
▪ That sweater must’ve cost you a million dollars!
o Simile: a comparison using like or as
▪ The sun looked like a dream.
o Metaphor: a comparison that does not use like or as
▪ She is an early bird.
− Anyone struggling with any of these definitions?
− Fist to five?
Transition − Get handeroutters to give a copy of figurative language worksheet to
every student 3 min.
− Put it into your spelling duotang
Learning − Explain that instead of spelling for this week, you will be doing a figurative
Activity #3 writing worksheet
− No test at the end of the week
− There is a question for each of the types of figurative language we talked
about, plus 2 that combine all of these ideas 36 min.
− You can work by yourself, with a partner, in a group, etc. I am also here if
anyone is struggling to understand any of these types of figurative
language.
