DERIVING LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

 To derive or formulate linear equations in two variables, we formulae to be used.

y 2−¿ y
1. Two-point form of the equation of a line is y- y 1 = x −x ( x −x1 ) ¿ ,

2 1

where (x 1 , y 1 ) and (x 2 , y 2 ) are any two points on the line

 Find the equation of the line passing through the points (3,5) and (-2,-4).

2. The point - slope form of the equation of a line is y - y 1 = m ( x−x 1 ) ,

wherem isthe slope∧(x1 , y 1) is an arbitrary point on the line.

 Find the equation of a line with the slope of 2 and passing through the
point (1,2).

x y
3. The two-intercept form of the equation of a line is + =1 , where a is the x-
a b
intercept and b is the y- intercept.

 Find the equation of a line with x-intercept of 1 and y-intercept of -2.

4. The slope-intercept form of the equation of a line is y = mx + b, where m is the slope of

the line and b is the y-intercept.

 Find the equation of a line when the slope is -3 and y- intercept is – 1/2.

Try to find the equation of the following given:

Find the equation of the line of the form y = x + b that passes through the following pairs
of points.
5. (3,4) and (4,7)
6. m = 2, b= 3
7. m = -3, (1,3)
8. a = 2, b=3
