what are gmo’s?
GMO/s, or the Genetically Modified Organisms are
organisms whose genetic material has been altered using
Genetic Engineering.

Genetic Engineering is the modification of an organism’s

phenotype by altering its genetic make-up. Its primarily
performed by simple mating or gene recombination.

The role of genetic engineering in the field of

medicine is that its adding a gene from one
species to an organism from a different
species to produce a desired trait.
some
examples of
genetically
modified
organisms
(GMOs) used
in medicine
include:
Insulin-producing bacteria:
Genetically modified bacteria like
Escherichia coli (E. coli) are used to
produce human insulin for
diabetes treatment.
-Genetically modified yeast for
hepatitis B vaccine:
Yeast has been genetically
engineered to produce proteins similar
to those found in the hepatitis B virus,
enabling the production of the
hepatitis B vaccine.
-Monoclonal antibodies: These are often
produced using genetically modified
mammalian cells. Monoclonal antibodies are
used in various medical treatments, including
cancer therapy and autoimmune diseases.
-Enzymes for treating rare
diseases: Genetically modified
microorganisms are used to
produce enzymes for the
treatment of certain rare
genetic disorders.
4. Pros of GMO in medicine include the potential for
enhanced drug production, development of more
effective treatments.
Cons of GMO in medicine is that it emcompass
potential unforeseen side effects in unidentified
consequences of ethical dilemmas related to
manipulating genetic material.
Genetic Engineering allows Doctors to treat
patients with rare cases of diseases, and also to cure diseases even
faster by experimenting and altering different genes, making it
effective for us to use. Genetic Engineering also allows them to
make future medicines faster to work, and that the people
especially with rare diseases and disabilities will have a good life
ahead just by taking medicines out of it.
that’s all
thank you!
