The Spinal Cord
• From brainstem to L3 (Nb), or L1-L2 (adults)
• Pathway of nerve signals
• 31 pairs of spinal Nerves

Causes:
• Direct trauma
• Fall injury.
• Severe ↓ blood flow on spinal cord
• Vehicular Accident
• Contact Sport
Signs & Symptoms
• Intense pain & tingling on site of injury
• DOB &/or coughing reflex
• X Movement
• X or altered sensation
Spinal Cord Injury
• X Bowel &/or bladder control
• Sustained damage to the spinal cord • ↑ sensation & reflexes/spasms
• or nerves at the end of the spinal canal (cauda
Diagnostic Testing

• CT Scan
• Causes Partial or Total Paralysis
• MRI
Management
• STABILIZE SPINE
• Maintain spine alignment.
• OXYGENATE
• Start IV line (18g)
• Monitor for ↓ HR
• CORTICOSTEROIDS
• Monitor Temp
• IFC-UB
• NGT
• Monitor for I&O
• Maintain ROM exercise
• Turn side to side q 2 hours
• Maintain spine alignment throughout
• nursing care
