CONSTANT VOLUME D.D.C. SYS.

TEST PROCEDURES

AIR SYSTEM ___________________

1. Confirm the following items are complete and / or tested before starting performance testing:
a. Final air balance of the unit and all terminal supply air equipment.
b. Final water balance of all unit coils and all coils in terminal supply air equipment.
c. All unit and terminal control systems, D.D.C. point calibration, and software
verification.

2. Complete installation checks before starting dynamic checks.

3. Before starting the following work, verify calibration of room temperature sensors,
operation of reheat and radiation valves, and operation of c.v. box volume control dampers.

4. Air Terminal System Test Procedures:

a. Check factory setting of each terminal box air volume.
b. Check air balance for all diffusers.
c. Measure and sum air volume from each diffuser. Compare to D.D.C. readout of box
volume. Compare D.D.C. readout of box volume to specified maximum volume.
d. After air balance is verified, check terminal box reheat coil capacities. Ensure supply
water is at design temperature.
e. Check diffuser air flow pattern to ensure diffusers do not dump.
f. Check for and record any noise problems caused by air flow or mechanical vibration
or transmission.
g. Test and record building and zone pressurization levels. Check pressurization during
winter conditions with ambient temperature below -15C. (For multi-story buildings
test pressure conditions at ground and upper levels.) Check front doors, exits and
elevator shafts for air flow so that conditions do not cause excessive or abnormal
pressures. Document abnormal building leakage noted.

5. Air Handling Unit Test Procedures:

a. Adjust mixing dampers so the unit is supplying maximum outdoor air permitted by
the ambient temperature. Measure system supply and return volumes by doing a pitot
tube traverse of each fan in the supply and return ducts as close to the unit as
possible. Compare the supply fan volume to the D.D.C. readout of the sum of the c.v.
box volumes.

TEST PROCEDURES
5.(cont.) b. With the unit set to the same maximum permissable outdoor air used in 5a. above
take static pressure readings before and after each fan, coil, filter, and other pressure
restricting device in the unit.
c. Check the system cooling capacity when the ambient temperature is warm enough to
give design air on coil temperature. Supply chilled water / glycol at its design
minimum temperature. Fully open cooling coil control valves and set mixing dampers
to provide design air on coil temperature. Check and record the summation of c.v.
box volumes. Measure and record wet bulb and dry bulb entering and leaving air
temperatures, and chilled water / glycol flow rate and supply and return temperatures.
If the coil is wet remeasure entering and leaving static pressures. If the mixed air
temperature at minimum fresh air is lower than design on coil air temperature preheat
the space before testing the cooling coil.
d. Check system heating capacity when the ambient temperature is cool enough to give
design on coil air temperature. Supply heating water / glycol at its design maximum
temperature. Fully open heating coil control valve and set unit mixing dampers to
provide design on coil air temperature. Check and record the summation of c.v. box
volumes. Measure and record entering and leaving air temperatures, water / glycol
flow rate, and supply and return temperatures. If the mixed air temperature at
maximum permitted outdoor air is still higher than the design on coil air temperature,
precool the space before testing the heating coil.
e. Calculate heating and cooling coil air side and water side heat transfer rate (kW) on
completion of these tests. If good correlation is not achieved, repeat the
measurements, or determine and record the reason why good correlation can not be
achieved.
f. Check system humidifiers in winter with low outdoor relative humidity. Set the
mixing dampers for the most outdoor air the unit can supply without freezing coils or
supplying air at too low a temperature. Set the humidifier for maximum humidity.
Monitor supply air dry and wet bulb temperatures until the unit is producing the
maximum humidity it can. Record inlet and outlet air dry and wet bulb temperatures
and air volume. For steam humidifiers record steam pressure and test the high limit
cut out by progressively opening the steam control valve. Record humidity level
where high limit shuts off humidifier. Air volume may be reduced to increase
humidity levels to test high limits.
g. Measure the pressure drop across the system filters at maximum air volume and note
the condition of the filters.

TEST PROCEDURES

h. Check unit mixing plenums and dampers by measuring air temperatures in a grid
pattern to determine if temperature stratification exists. Do this during cold weather
for the maximum permitted out door air quantity, (not greater than 50%) and
minimum out door air positions. Where units have air blenders do these checks after
the air blenders. Be careful not to freeze coils.
i. When testing is complete return all controls and equipment status to normal operating
conditions.
j. Calculate air system component capacities and compare to specified capacities.
Calculate coil capacities at test conditions. Use Manufacturer's published data and the
calculated capacity at test conditions to compute actual capacities at design
conditions.
