Among all the theories discussed, the closest to my heart as a counselor is the

Behavioral Theories or Behaviorism. I greatly believe that the environment has a great

influence on a student’s behavior. Teachers are really a great part in molding the behavior

and responses of a student. Their implemented behavioral learning strategy is a big influence

towards a student’s behavior. In connection to this, the behavior of the teacher can also be a

great influence on the behavior of a student. During their school years, teachers are the

primary role models of the students, that is why teachers or educators should be very careful

with how they behave as well.

As a Guidance Associate, it is very evident that students especially those in their High

School years look up to their teachers and do what they say in order for them to get rewards

and avoid punishment. However, there are times that students don’t follow a teacher’s rule

because the teachers themselves cannot do it. For example, I remember an instance where

the teacher asked the student to “tone down” his hair color and then the next day, the same

teacher went to school with a bright hair color even if the school administrators do not allow

that. In the end, the student did not tone down his hair color because he saw that his teacher

also had her hair colored. This simple situation shows how big of an impact we can make as

an educator. That is why I am a great believer that as educators, we must be the students’

greatest role model.
