RECAP
Instructions are commands or steps on how to make a particular
event happen. They often focus on how to do a particular task.

LESSON
Listen as your teacher reads an article on birds. Note the important
details for it.

Increasing Bird Population

A game refuge refers to a forest land designated for the protection

of game animals and birds. It is closed to hunting in order that the
population will grow and surrounding areas can be restocked. But some
insistent hunters still hunt the birds and game animals and sell them.
However, those who are caught are penalized. In a bird sanctuary, all the
birds and animals are left to themselves to increase their number.
The dipterocarp forest is the richest type of tropical rain forest.
The thick canopy is the richest habitat for birds. Our country is known to be
very rich in fauna. Our climate is ideal for many bird species. The top of

7
high mountains offers very favourable conditions for the evolution of new
species of birds. The species will then increase in number.
Some of the well-known or familiar birds of the Philippines are the
eagles, hawks and falcons which are birds-of-prey. Other relatively big birds
are the hornbill, herons, egrets, wild ducks, and owls. They vary in their
habitat, physical characteristics, and behaviour. One of the beautiful singing
birds is the mynah.

Let’s talk about these.

1. What is a game refuge?
2. What has the government done to make hunters stay away from the
game refuge?
3. What can you do to prevent the extinction of some endangered
species of birds?
4. Would you want to make a stand to help our feathered friends?

When you make a stand on an idea, these should be done:

1. Choose whether it is for or against the message or idea of the

statement.
2. You agree on the reasons why you are for or against it.
3. Brainstorm on research-based details, evidence, facts, or words
from authorities to support your stand.
4. Have an effective and strong ending.

ACTIVITIES
Activity 1

Directions: Make a stand expressing your opinion about protecting the

endemic species of birds in the Philippines.

Activity 2

Directions: Read the selection below and answer the questions that follow.

How to Segregate Garbage

Garbage segregation is the process of grouping garbage according to

its kind. It is often done in schools, companies, and even at home.
Generally, garbage segregation involves separating dry and wet garbage. Dry
garbage includes wood and related products, metals, and glass. Wet garbage

8
typically refers to organic waste usually generated by eating establishments
and are heavy in weight due to dampness. Garbage may also be segregated
on basis of biodegradable or nonbiodegradable waste.

These are the four types of garbage:

1. Wet waste

2. Sanitary waste

3. Dry waste

4. Hazardous household waste or E-waste

What is your idea about practicing garbage segregation in school?

Share your ideas about garbage segregation and make a stand on whether
or not the school should promote a strict implementation of this.

Activity 3

Directions: Show how to make a stand expressing your feelings and

reactions to the following situation:

1. A group of students mock one of their teachers for being overweight in a

video posted online. The teacher suffers depression that affects his personal
and professional life.

2. An elderly woman is threatened verbally by her neighbour. She is afraid

for her safety but does not report him. She’s thinking to move to other place.

WRAP-UP
What does the following quote mean to you and explain how it relates
to today’s lesson.

“Stand up for something, even if it means standing alone.

Because often times the ones who fly solo has the strongest wings.”

9
VALUING
If children learn by example how to be a loving person then they will
grow up showing love to others. If children understand that they are
responsible for their actions, then they will grow up to hold others and
themselves to high standards of responsibility.

If children understand the importance of being contributing members

of their communities then they will grow up to be active, caring citizens.
These three values are integral in making our country a stronger, safer place
to live.
