2.2 Introduction See Figure 1. This section describes the ADB Airfield Solutions Signature Series L-861T
elevated taxiway edge LED (ETES) light.
INSTALL

See Figure 1 for the main items in the assembly. Typical installation is on a L-867 light base.
The housing assembly includes the electronic package.
The optional mounting is stake mounted on a 30-inch galvanized steel stake. The fixtures can
also be mounted on a base plate for a 12- or 16-inch diameter L-867 base with 1-1/2-inch
NPS or a special 2-inch NPT frangible reducer coupling for an existing installation that has
2-inch NPT hubs in the base plate. Base mounting is recommended because maintenance is
easier to perform. Stake-mounted lights require transformers, cables, and connectors that
are designed for direct earth burial.

2.2.1 Compliance with FAA: Designed according to L-861T AC 150/5345-46 (Current Edition) and the FAA
Standards Engineering Brief No. 67 “Light Sources other than Incandescent and Xenon for Airport

Document Date (12/2010) Introduction

2.2.3 Features • ETES with arctic option (U.S. Patent 7192155 B2) uses a thermostatically controlled
heater to prevent ice and snow buildup from obscuring light output. Melts ice similar to

INSTALL
traditional incandescent fi xtures. Heater is available on both glass and poylcarbonate
options.
• Thermostatically controlled heater cycles on and off when temperature drops below
freezing, reducing overall energy consumption
• Average LED life of 100,000 hours under high-intensity conditions and more than 200,000
hours under actual operating conditions, resulting in signifi cant reduction or even
elimination of ongoing maintenance costs and periodic re-lamping expenses
• The ETES with heater fi xture MTBF is at least 180,000 operating hours.
• Blue optical outer lens ensures high daytime visibility
• UV resistant polycarbonate outer lens option minimizes risk of lens damage if fixture is
knocked over
• Can be installed on existing series circuits with no modifications to existing CCR or
isolation transformer
• Robust, solid-state device withstands damage if fixture is knocked over. Internal
electronics ruggedly mounted inside fixture housing.
• LED module is an integral component of above-ground fixture, so electronics are not
subject to water or deicing agents and abuse present in L-867 base cans
• Operates on either 3- or 5-step ferroresonant or thyristor CCRs that are designed in
compliance with FAA requirements
• Very low power rating for LED lights contributes to a lower life cycle cost. Limits cost for
supporting equipment such as isolation transformers and CCRs to strict minimum.
• When quartz-incandescent fixtures are replaced with LED fixtures, airport staff can add
more lights without increasing CCR size
• Offers longer intervals between maintenance and requires fewer spare parts, resulting in
lower life cycle costs
• “Smart electronics” control current to LED, so light output matches existing incandescent
fixtures at all brightness levels without sacrificing any light characteristics. Actual light
output is determined based on a continuous light output curve. Therefore, light output
truly represents input current, even if series circuit input current is not within FAA
specification limits. Allows for a low cost and progressive evolution of the airfi eld lighting
toward new LED-based technology.
• Direct replacement for existing fixture using existing frangible coupling and base plate,
reducing installation time
• 10/15 and 20/25W isolation transformers are available for use with ETES fixtures to
match fixture load for optimal efficiency (see catalog sheet 1215). A standard 30/45W
isolation transformer may also be used.
• Rugged low-profi le design reduces damage due to jet blast
• Designed to exceed lightning protection requirements of ANSI/IEEE C62.41-1991
Category C1 given in FAA Eng. Brief 67
• Use of LED light source eliminates filter replacement and color shifts when viewed at
various angles or CCR step settings
• Provides ±4.5° vertical adjustment
• Fixture uses aluminum casting, stainless steel hardware, and is protected with aviation
yellow powder coat finish. Locking ring is protected with aviation blue powder coat fi nish.

3. Level the light base so that the mounting flange surface is level with the finished grade.
4. With the base at the proper orientation and held at proper elevation, place approximately
4-inches (101.6 mm) of concrete backfill around the outside base.

NOTE: If the concrete backfill is omitted, the earth backfill must be compacted to maintain
proper elevation and orientation of the base.

5. Slope the top of the concrete away from the flange portion of the base so the sloped outer
edges of the concrete are at surface grade.
6. Connect the field circuit to the appropriate isolation transformer. Refer to Table 4.

NOTE: Use a brick to raise the transformer about 3 inches above the bottom surface of the
L-867 light base to avoid the possibility of the transformer being partially immersed in water in
case water accumulates above the level of the ducts or pipes.

After you have connected the transformer, check the continuity of the series loop.
7. Wrap the connector joints in the primary circuit with at least one layer of rubber or
synthetic rubber tape and one layer of plastic tape one-half lapped, extending at least
1-1/2 inches (3.81 cm) on each side of the joint.
8. Clamp the female secondary plug from the isolation transformer to the L-867 base plate
fitting using the clamp device supplied with the base plate.
9. Bolt the base plate (Figure 2) with the base plate gasket to the L-867 base using six 3/8-
16 stainless steel bolts. Apply a drop of Loctite number 243 to each bolt thread, and use a
torque wrench to torque bolts down to 100/110 inch-pounds (11.3 Nt-m).
10. Once the base plate has been installed the light fixture assembly is ready to install.
11. Connect the male L-823 plug (Figure 3) from the light fixture to the female plug on the
secondary lead of the isolation transformer by first loosening the frangible coupling hex
screw (Figure 2) until the coupling is free. Then retighten the hex screw finger-tight.
12. Plug the L-823 into the mating isolation transformer secondary lead.
13. Loosen the hex screw on the coupling to free the coupling. Handscrew the coupling into
the base plate hub. Finish tightening the coupling with a wrench.
