1. Introduction
The exact localisation, - the pinpointing of a cable fault, should follow an accurate
pre-location procedure, so that the different pinpointing technologies have just to be
used on short cable part. This results in a significantly shorter complete location time,
also reducing stress to the cable and its accessories.
Due to pulse reflection theories, the fault to be prelocated must have certain
parameters in order to be measurable and visible. By converting the fault on a
permanent base (burning), or temporary by short term high voltage applications, also
faults which are difficult to see can be found.
The pre-location methods are divided into the following types:
2. Basics
A measuring pulse is injected at the beginning of the cable, which travels to the fault
position with the typical cable based velocity (v) and is there reflected back to the
start (fig. 1). The time required by the pulse to move forward and to return is then
measured and multiplied by the v/2 propagation velocity. This calculated value
corresponds to the distance to the fault position.

Reflection factor “r”
Each change to the homogenous cable construction results in a change in inductivity
and/or capacity (also in conductivity G) at this position, which results in a change of
the characteristic impedance “Z”. This impedance change reflects a certain amount of
the travelling pulse towards the transmitter
Mostly, only a part of the pulse is reflected, the remaining pulse continues to the next
impedance change, where it or parts of it are reflected to the beginning of the cable.
The visible amplitude of the reflected pulse is determined by both, the reflection
factor (r) and the cable attenuation. Long cables with small cross-sections require
much higher accentuated faults (either with very low or high resistance) in order to
be visible.

Cable faults often have resistances that are significantly above 2 kOhm and have
virtually infinite values. These faults are resulting not visible by a normal reflection
measurement. In this case, the fault conversion has to be used. The fault must at
least be changed for a short duration to become visible for the Reflectometer.
Pulse width
Depending on the cable length (fault distance) Pulses of different widths must be
used. Narrow pulses permit only short ranges but a very high and detailed
resolution. Wide pulses are applied on long cables. But in this case the resolution
decreases and the possible dead zone expands. On most Reflectometers, the pulse
width is automatically linked to the measuring range, but can also be manually
changed.

This means that the transmitted measuring pulse itself will cover an area of this
length. Depending on the construction of the Reflectometer, virtually no other effects
(e.g. faults) can be seen within this area. This area is therefore known as the "dead
zone".
However, a dead zone does not automatically mean that absolutely no details can be
seen within the area. The changes within the start pulse are still visible.
Additionally, the sent pulse is immediately suppressed (compensation) by the input
terminating sets used by SebaKMT. This means that all other changes can be seen
immediately.

An automatic switching of the pulse width always ensures the optimised adjustment
of the measurement pulse in respect to the distance. These adjustments can also be
made manually. By reducing the pulse width, the operator can create more details.
As seen in the following diagrams, a wide measurement pulse shows all reflections
clear and on a large scale. If higher levels of accuracy are required, then the pulse
width must be reduced. Only then, the smaller changes and details become visible.
Limits are set by the attenuation. This means that an endless reduction of the pulse
width is not possible and is also not supported by the system.

Cable attenuation and dispersion
Both, the cable cross-section and length lead to changes in the amplitude and form
of the pulse transmitted into the cable.

The attenuation causes the reflected signal to become smaller with the increasing
distance. The attenuation is shown by the red line in Fig. 5.
As the attenuation applies to a natural (exponential) function, it can also be
calculated and corrected. This distance depending amplitude correction is shown in
the following figure 6.
Dispersion is another factor that influences the pulse Shape. Higher signal
frequencies are more attenuated than lower frequencies, resulting distant pulses
appear much wider than from the near distance. Due to the combination of
attenuation and dispersion, the far distant reflections are sometimes difficult to
evaluate.

The distance depending amplitude correction allows all events to be displayed in the
appropriate corrected size independent of the distance. This permit a relatively
exact evaluation of these events and their size.

Compensation and adaptation
The compensation is one of the bases of reflection measurement methods. The size
to be measured is compared to a compensation size. The compensation value is
constantly readjusted until consistency can be determined (adjustment).
The resistance (shown as I 2) is compared to the impedance of the cable using the "R"
potentiometer. The send pulse is suppressed by the already described terminating
set. In practice, the transmitted pulse in the lowest measurement range should be
adjusted using the compensation until positive and negative reflections are equal in
size and have ideally zero value.
This means in reference to the following fig. 7. If the transmitted (I 1-I2) and
simultaneous returning start pulse (I 3) are identical, they will compensate each other
and are resulting invisible for the operator.
Adaptation is the setting or alignment of one state to another, in this case the output
impedance to the cable impedance. On the Reflectometer, a real impedance
matching to the cable is usually done by a transformer circuit, to enable the maximum
possible energy to be transferred. This applies to both, transmitted and received
pulses.

3. Measuring methods – Examples
Improvements of the evaluation of measurement are especially possible by
comparing measurements. A comparison will show the details of the fault or a
difference more clearly. Where measurements can be stored, it is also possible to
compare a single core cable to itself, by comparing the measurement against a
stored trace. In between the measurements the faults can be enhanced by
manipulating them, for example by burning or with the different Arc Reflection
Methods (ARM®)
3. Set the compensation so that a horizontal trace is visible at the start of the reflectogram
where possible. The remaining small visible positive and negative deflections should
be relatively symmetrical. Avoid a saturation.
4. Enhance the fault position by using the gain setting. Reduce the Display range if
necessary.
5. Measure the fault location. The exact measurement of the fault position is made by
using the vertical cursor which is set to the foot point of the fault reflection , the position
where the fault reflection just starts and where it causes the first change from the
common behaviour of the trace. This is not necessarily a deviation from the horizontal
line, but can also be starting within an existing reflection.
6. If possible, a comparison of good and faulty line should be made. The normally good
visible deviation (splitting) of both reflectograms at the fault location ca n be measured
very easy, which permits a high level of accuracy and easier fault recognition.

Measuring methods
Line comparison
A fault-free, good core is necessary for line comparison. The alternating switching of
the good line and faulty line shows a difference between both reflectograms which
indicates the fault position.

IFL mode (fault location of intermittent problems)
Differential measurement
When the differential method is used, the good and faulty lines are connected
simultaneously via a differential transformer to the Reflectometer. In this mode, one
line is measured normally. When measuring the comparison line, the polarity of all
reflections is changed by the differential transformer. This means that only the real
differences are shown in differential mode. Faults of the same size or completely
interrupted cables cannot be seen since no difference exists.
Note: When using the differential method, always ensure a correct connection
of the test leads. Interchanging causes changes in the polarity of the reflection.
Averaging
Inductive couplings or other external influences as radio stations etc. generate noise
and disturbances in the trace. These disturbances can be eliminated by using the
averaging mode, which averages with up to 256 measurements.

Parallel fault
The closer the value of fault resistance is to the cable impedance, the less it
becomes visible. Are both values identical, no reflection can be seen.
Exactly this effect is also used in the communication area for the resistive termination
of circuits. (LAN, antenna circuits or other data lines). If the terminating resistor is
equal to the cable impedance, no signal will be reflected. This can also be tested and
verified with a Reflectometer.

For the fault location it is of essential importance, to observe, that a good visible open
reflection is not certainly the end of the cable, but can also be an interrupt or cut of
the cable.

Equipment
Microflex
The TDR Microflex measures the cable length and can display fault distances of up
to 3500 metres in almost all types of cables.
Miniflex
The TDR Miniflex is a small portable TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer). It weighs
only 350 grams and is used to detect faults in metallic electrical, data and
communication cables with lengths of up to 6000 metres. This device is particularly
suited to detecting close range faults due to its range of 7 metres.
Easyflex Com
The Easyflex Com is a compact, light and easy-to-use digital pulse-echo device. It is
used for fault location on symmetrical communication lines, pilot cables, street
lighting networks and low-voltage networks. This device is particularly suited to
detecting close range faults (e.g. main cable on service entrance boxes) due to its
range of 10 metres.
Digiflex Com
The Digiflex Com is a compact, light and easy-to-use digital pulse-echo device. It is
used for fault location on symmetrical remote lines, control cables and street lighting
networks. By the integrated mains filter the unit is especially suitable for the use in
the energised mains distribution and other and low-voltage networks. This device is
particularly suited to detecting close range faults (e.g. main cable on service entrance
boxes) due to its range of 5 metres (smallest pulse width = 5 ns).

Teleflex T30
The T 30-E is a portable, digital TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer). It is designed for
cable pre-location in medium and low-voltage cable networks. The device comes
equipped with a stable, weatherproof housing, and has both a mains and battery
power supply, meaning it can be used individually or as a permanently installed
fixture on a cable test van.
The Teleflex T 30-E offers five different fault detection modes:

Teleflex MX
The Teleflex MX can is used as a central control element in most SebaKMT test van
System (e.g. Centrix, Classic, R30). The available fault location methods are used
according to the test van version and equipment.
Additionally, the Teleflex MX "Portable" can also be used as a stand-alone version or
can be connected to the suitable HV equipment (independent of the test van).
The Teleflex MX "Portable" can also be equipped with a multiplexer, which offers
diverse switching possibilities for HV equipment and test objects.
The following TDR measurements can be made using the Teleflex MX without
additional equipment:
