WEEKLY REPORT
WEEK – 1 (From Dt: 03-07-2023 to Dt: 15-07-2023 )

Objective of the Activity Done:

The primary objective of the activity is to address and mitigate water pollution issues in a
specific locality in Amalapuram. The detailed report provides an overview of the steps taken over a
six-day period, including obtaining permission, identifying the affected area, collecting information
on residents and their problems, conducting awareness talks, and planning for future awareness
programs.
Detailed Report:
In the initial phase of our water pollution mitigation project in Amalapuram, our team
commenced by visiting the municipal office to secure the necessary permissions for the
endeavor. Crafting a handwritten permission letter, we sought the endorsement of the
concerned officer to proceed with the project. With official approval in hand, we strategically
selected a locality notorious for causing water pollution. Here, we meticulously compiled a
list of householders' names and documented the various problems they were facing due to the
pollution.

The subsequent days were dedicated to on-site awareness campaigns. Entering households,
our team engaged in impactful talks, enlightening residents about the severity of water
pollution and its direct impact on their lives. Notes were diligently made, capturing the
specific problems faced by each household and identifying victims within the locality. Day
four witnessed an extension of our awareness campaign, as we visited three additional
houses, intensifying our efforts to comprehend the scope of the issue. Detailed notes were
prepared, outlining the unique challenges faced by each household.

Transitioning from households to the streets on day five, we engaged with people at a specific
location, conducting talks to raise awareness about water pollution. In this open setting, we
actively listened to individuals and documented instances of illnesses or problems directly
attributed to the pollution in the area. On the final day, our focus shifted to future-oriented
awareness. Addressing a general public gathering, we explained the potential challenges we
might face if the current pollution levels persist. A comprehensive future-based awareness
program was introduced, aiming to educate the community about the importance of
sustainable practices to prevent long-term environmental consequences. This six-day
endeavor marked the initial steps in our comprehensive water pollution mitigation project,
laying the groundwork for further analysis, planning, and implementation of sustainable
solutions in the chosen locality.

WEEKLY REPORT
WEEK – 2 (From Dt: 03-07-2023 to Dt: 15-07-2023 )

Objective of the Activity Done:

Our objective was to heighten awareness of water pollution's health impacts.
Visiting the municipal water purification office and RO plants in Amalapuram, we learned
purification processes. A Google Form survey gauged public awareness, aiding in addressing
concerns. To validate our efforts, we obtained a verification letter from the municipal office
and submitted a signed completion letter.
Detailed Report:
The educational initiative undertaken to raise awareness about water pollution proved to be
successful, particularly among students, who gained a comprehensive understanding of the
illnesses caused by water contamination. To enhance their knowledge, a visit to the Water
Purification Office in Amalapuram was organized. At the municipal water purification
facility, participants were enlightened about the meticulous process involved in producing
pure water. Subsequently, a visit to the Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in the area provided
additional insights into alternative methods of water purification.
The comparison between the purification processes employed by municipal facilities and RO
plants allowed the students to grasp the nuances of each method. To gauge the impact of the
awareness campaign, a survey was conducted using a Google Form, reaching out to the
community for their opinions and experiences related to water pollution. The collected data
served as a valuable resource to understand the public's perspective on this critical issue and
facilitated the creation of initiatives to address specific concerns.
To officially conclude the project, a visit to the municipal office was made to obtain a
verification letter. In addition, a handwritten project completion letter was crafted and duly
signed, solidifying the successful completion of the educational endeavor. This holistic
approach, combining theoretical knowledge, practical exposure, community engagement, and
official documentation, underscores the thoroughness and effectiveness of the water pollution
awareness project.

12
CHAPTER 4: OUTCOMES DESCRIPTION

Details of the Socio-Economic Survey of the Village Attach thequestionnaire prepared for the survey.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC SURVEY:
The socio-economic survey conducted in the village to assess water pollution encompassed a holistic

approach, analyzing various vital aspects. The demographic study provided insights into the population's

composition, education, occupations, and household structures. It also highlighted the prevalent water

sources and their usage for daily activities. Water quality assessments involving pH levels, presence of

contaminants, and microbial content were undertaken across these sources. Health data was collected to

understand prevalent waterborne diseases and potential health impacts. Additionally, the survey delved

into the economic ramifications, examining how water pollution affected agricultural practices and

livelihoods. Furthermore, it gauged the community's awareness, attitudes, and knowledge regarding water

pollution and potential remedial actions. This comprehensive approach aimed to uncover the multifaceted

influences of water pollution on the village's socio-economic dynamics, offering a foundation for targeted

and effective interventions.

Questionnaire :
1. What sources of water pollution are you most concerned about in your local area?

2. Are you aware of any industrial or agricultural activities that may contribute to water pollution in your
region?

3. Do you believe that water pollution affects your daily life? If so, how?

4. How concerned are you about the quality of drinking water in your community?

5. Are you aware of any recent initiatives or policies aimed at reducing water pollution in your area?

6. Have you personally taken any actions to help prevent water pollution?

13
7. How well-informed do you feel about the impact of water pollution on the environment and
human health

8. What measures do you think should be taken to reduce water pollution effectively?

9. In your opinion, what role should government, industries, and individuals play in tackling
water pollution?

10. Would you be willing to support or participate in community efforts to reduce water
pollution?

14
Describe the problems you have identified in the community
Water pollution in communities can stem from various sources, leading to several issues, including:

1. Industrial Waste: Discharge of pollutants from industries into water bodies.

2. Agricultural Runoff: Pesticides, fertilizers, and animal waste contaminating water sources.

3. Sewage and Waste Disposal: Improperly treated sewage and waste disposal affecting water quality.

4. Plastic Pollution: Accumulation of plastic waste in waterways harming aquatic life.

5. Oil Spills: Accidental or deliberate discharge of oil harming marine ecosystems.

6. Heavy Metals: Contamination from heavy metals affecting both human health and aquatic life.

7. Eutrophication: Excessive nutrient runoff leading to algal blooms and oxygen depletion in water
bodies.

15
Short-term and long-term action plan for possible solutions for the problems identified and that
could be recommended to the concerned authorities for implementation.

Short – term Solutions:

In certain areas of the world that do not have access to water treatment plants, alternative methods

of purification must be used they are:

1. Boiling: The simplest method to purify water is to boil it for a good time. High

temperatures cause the bacteria and virus to dissipate, removing all impurities from the

water.

2. Granular activated-carbon filtering: Heat is used to activate the surface area of the

carbon. The activated carbon removes certain chemicals from the water passing through a

GAC filter by trapping the chemical in the GAC.

3. Reverse osmosis: An RO purifier proves to be one of the best methods of

purifying water. Reverse osmosis forces water through a semipermeable

membrane and removes contaminants.

Long -term Solutions:

1. Chlorination: It is an older technique used usually during an emergency, where in a

mild bleach with approximately 5% chlorine is added to the water.

2. UV Radiation: Water is exposed to a UV light that kills microorganisms, thereby

preventing it from breeding further. But if not coupled with an RO filter, UV radiation

alone cannot remove impurities and heavy metals.

3. Solar Purification: It is a simple water treatment method using solar radiation (UV-A

light and temperature) to destroy pathogenic bacteria and viruses present in the water.

4. Flocculation: Flocculation is a water treatment process where solids form larger

clusters, or flocs, to be removed from water. This process can happen spontaneously, or

with the help of chemical agents.

16
Description of the Community awareness programmes conducted w.r.t the problems and their
outcomes.

Report of the mini-project work done in the related subject w.r.t the
habitation/village.

Our mini project focused on evaluating water pollution in Amalapuram, addressing the alarming
concerns surrounding water quality in the region. Utilizing water samples from various sources
like rivers, lakes, and groundwater, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of key parameters
such as pH levels, chemical composition, and microbial contamination. The results revealed
significant pollution levels, particularly in industrial areas and urban centers. Our findings
underscore the urgent need for sustainable water management practices and regulatory measures
to mitigate pollution and ensure the health and well-being of the local community in Amalapuram.

The Report shall be limited pages:

 This is about the mini project work that was done in Gandhinagar in
Amalapuram village.

 This project is about the Water pollution and its measures.

 For this we choose a village and conduct the survey by interacting with each
and individual person and conduct awareness campaign with in the village.

 For this we choose a Gandhinagar village which is situated Amalapuram in

Andhra Pradesh. It belongs to Andhra region.

What is Water Pollution?

Water pollution can be defined as the contamination of water bodies. Water
pollution is caused when water bodies such as rivers, lakes, oceans, groundwater
and aquifers get contaminated with industrial and agricultural effluents.

When water gets polluted, it adversely affects all lifeforms that directly or indirectly
depend on this source. The effects of water contamination can be felt for years to
come.

19
Sources Of Water Pollution

The key causative of water pollution in India are:

 Urbanization.
 Deforestation.
 Industrial effluents.
 Social and Religious Practices.
 Use of Detergents and Fertilizers.
 Agricultural run-offs- Use of insecticides and pesticides.

Control Measures of Water Pollution

Water pollution, to a larger extent, can be controlled by a variety of methods.

Rather than releasing sewage waste into water bodies, it is better to treat them
before discharge. Practising this can reduce the initial toxicity and the remaining
substances can be degraded and rendered harmless by the water body itself. If the
secondary treatment of water has been carried out, then this can be reused in
sanitary systems and agricultural fields.

A very special plant, the Water Hyacinth can absorb dissolved toxic chemicals such
as cadmium and other such elements. Establishing these in regions prone to such
kinds of pollutants will reduce the adverse effects to a large extent.

Some chemical methods that help in the control of water pollution are precipitation,
the ion exchange process, reverse osmosis, and coagulation. As an
individual, reusing, reducing, and recycling wherever possible will advance a long
way in overcoming the effects of water pollution.

20
Steps we follow:
❖ Our project is mainly based on water pollution and its safety measures:

❖ Our project mainly involves 4 steps:

1. Survey: In this stage we are going to collect the data from every individual person. The data

includes the information about Water pollution, how much Water they utilize.

2. Identifying the problem: Based on the above information we will analyze

and identify the problem in this stage.

3. Creating awareness: After identification of problems among the villagers

we have taken some initiation steps and providing some information about

water pollution.

Survey conduction:

We formed a group of 2 members and conduct a survey in the Gandhinagar village

in Amalapuram. For this we prepare a questionary to gather the required

information about the how much extent the Villagers know about water pollution

and the constraints that are faced by the water pollution.

Problems identified:

 Water pollution can cause the spread of diseases such as cholera,

Typhoid or diarrhea.

1. Typhoid Fever

Although rare in industrialized countries, typhoid fever is well-known

extremely poor parts of developing nations; it’s estimated that up to 20 million
people worldwide suffer from the illness each year. It’s spread through
contaminated food, unsafe water, and poor sanitation, and it is highly
contagious.

Symptoms include:

 A fever that increases gradually

 Muscle aches
 Fatigue
 Sweating
 Diarrhea or constipation

Prevention and Treatment

Vaccines are recommended for people who are traveling in areas where poor sanitation
and unsafe water are common. The vaccine can be injected via a shot or taken orally for a
few days. To prevent it, refrain from drinking any water that isn’t bottled and sealed, and
do not eat food from villages or street vendors. Typhoid is treated with antibiotics.

28
Cholera

Cholera is commonly found in humanitarian emergencies or marginalized villages where

poverty and poor sanitation are rampant. The disease is spread through contaminated water
and causes severe dehydration and diarrhea. Cholera can be fatal within days or even hours
of exposure to the bacteria, but only 1 in 10 people will develop life-threatening symptoms.

Symptoms include:
 Nausea
 Vomiting
 Diarrhea
 Muscle cramps

Prevention and Treatment

Cholera is a waterborne illness that’s easily prevented when traveling. Wash your hands
often, only eat foods that are completely cooked and hot (no sushi), and only eat vegetables
you can peel yourself, like avocados, bananas, and oranges. Of course, drink safe water.

When handwashing in unavailable, cholera can impact an entire village. In developing

countries like Ethiopia, data shows that 40 percent of households do not have means to
wash their hands properly, meaning they don’t have safe water, soap, and a facility to
wash. This makes hygiene management and disease prevention nearly impossible for these
communities.
