ECEG-4242 (4343): Power Electronics Credits: 5 ECTS First Semester , 2022/23

Course Objective:
The course aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of power electronics:
 To study and understand the characteristics of solid-state switching devices
 To study and understand basic power electronic converter topologies
 To study and understand auxiliary parts of the power converter like gate drivers, filters, snubber circuits

1. Solid-state Switching Devices (week 1, 2, 3)


Introduction, Ideal Switches, Switching Devices, Auxiliary Circuits and Devices
2. AC/DC Converters (week 4,5,6)
Various Topologies of Uncontrolled AC-DC Converters, Phase-Controlled AC-DC Converters, AC-DC
Converter Performance Measurement Indices, Ripple Filters, Device Selection for AC-DC Convertors
3. DC/DC Converters (week 7, 8, 1/2 of week 9)
Buck, Boost and Buck-Boost Topologies, Different Quadrant Operation, Voltage and Current Ripples
and Ripple Filters, Device Selection for DC-DC Converters
4. DC-AC Inverters (1/2 of week 9, 10, 11)
Inverter Family, Single-Phase Inverters, Three-Phase Inverters, Modulation Techniques, Device
Selection for DC-AC Inverters
5. AC to AC Converters (week 12, 13)
AC Choppers, Cyclo-Converters, Device Selection for AC-AC Converters
