Directions – This is a closed book examination. No talking or whispering are allowed. Work must
be shown to receive points. An answer alone is not enough. Please write neatly. Answers which
are illegible for the grader cannot be given credit.
Note that you can work on both sides of the paper and do not detach pages from this exam packet
or unstaple the packet. In each question, use (a), (b) and (c), they mean that each sub-question
is an independent question, use (i), (ii) and (iii), they mean that each sub-question is inter-related
question.
Students of the University must observe and uphold the highest standards of academic integrity
and honesty in all work they do throughout their program of study.
As members of the University community, students have the responsibility to help maintain the
academic reputation of HKUST in its academic endeavors.
Sanctions will be imposed on students, if they are found to have violated the regulations governing
academic integrity and honesty.
I confirm that I have answered the questions using only materials specifically approved for use in
this examination, that all the answers are my own work, and that I have not received any assistance
during the examination.

Explain why or why not Determine whether the following statements are true and give an
explanation or counterexample.
(a) The plane passing through the point (1, 1, 1) with a normal vector n = (1, 2, −3) is the same
as the plane passing through the point (3, 0, 1) with a normal vector n = (−2, −4, 6).
(d) Given a line ℓ and a point P0 not on ℓ, there is exactly one plane that contains ℓ and passes
through P0 .
(e) Given a plane R and a point P0 , there is exactly one plane that is orthogonal to R and passes
through P0 .

(a) Find the distance (in terms of n, r0 and r1 only) from a point r1 to the plane (r − r0 )· n = 0.
(b) Using part (a) or otherwise, show that the lines r = r1 + λa and r = r2 + µb intersect if only
if (r1 − r2 )· (a × b) = 0 (assume that a is not parallel to b).
(c) Find the projection point of the position vector (2, 3, −4) on the plane 3x + 2y − z = 0.
