THEROY
ESSENTIAL OILS ARE VOLATILE ETHEREAL OILS OF
CHARACTERISTICS ODOURS AND DISTILLED FROM
PLANTS.
THEY IMPART CHARACTERISTICS ODOUR TO THE
PLANT. THEY ARE FLAMMABLE, SULLUABLE IN
ALCOHOL SLIGHTLY SOLUBLE IN WATER.

THEY ARE NONE GREASY AND NONE SPONGING.


THEY ARE EXTRACTED BY STEAM DISTILLED
EXTRACTION MEANS DISSOLUTION AND REMOVAL OF
ONE CONSTITUTENT OF MIXTURE IN A SOLUTION
STEAM DISTILLATION IS USED TO SEPARATE THOSE
ORGANIC COMPOUNDS WHICH CO- DISTILLATED WITH
STEAM AND ARE SPARINGLY OR INSOLUBLE IN WATER.

STEAM GENERATED IN ONE FLASK BY HEATING


WATER IS PASSED THROUGH THE MIXTURE HEATED IN
ANOTHER FLASK.
THE VAPOUR COMING OUT OF THE FLASK IS A
GASEOUS
MIXTURE OF STEAM AND VOLATILE OIL THE VAPOUR
IS
CONDENSED PASSING THROUGH THE WATER
CONDENSER.THE ORGANIC LIQUID IS SEPERATED
FROM WATER BY SEPERATING FUNNEL.

PROCEDURE
1.SETUP APPARATUS
2. CRUSH 50G SAUNF IN A PERTLEAND TRANSFER TO
THE ROUND BOTTOM FLASK WHICH IS ON THE SAND
BATH.

3. PLACE 500CC OF WATER IN THE COPPER VESSEL


AND HEAT IT STRONGLY WITH A BUNSEN BURNER.
4. CONNECT THE WATER INLET OF THE CONDENSER TO
TAP AND PASS WATER CONTINUOUSLY, WATER
OUTLET IS PASSED TO SINK.

5. HEAT ROUND BOTTOM FLASK AND PASS STEAM THROUGH


IT CONTINUOUSLY.

6. AS HEATING IS CONTINUED, DISTILLED VAPOUR IS


COLLECTED IN THE CONICAL FLASK, WHEN ABOUT SOCC
DISTILLATE HAS BEEN COLLECTED, STOP THE HEATING.

7. TRANSFER THE DISTILLATE IN A SEPARATING FUNNEL AND


FIRST REMOVE LOWER WATER LAYER AND THEN COLLECT
THE UPPER OIL LAYER IN TEST TUBE. NOTE:-
THE COLOUR AND ODOUR OF THE OIL.

8. WASH THE ROUND BOTTOM FLASK AND REPEAT THE


EXPERIMENT FIRST WITH AJWAIN AND THEN WITH
ILLAICHI AND THEN WITH CLOVES.

THE WATERLAYER.

3.WASH THE ROUND BOTTOM FLASK


TO REMOVE THE OIL DROPS BEFORE
REPEATING THE EXPERIMENT.
