Evaluation becomes a necessary tools in
the educational process
It is a methods of determining the extent to
which established goals or objectives have
been achieved .
Ralph Tyler:-” Evaluation is the process of
determining to what extent the educational
objectives are being realized”.
Education reset upon three pillars viz.,
objective
Learning
experiences Evaluation
techniques
Improvement Provision of To improve
of instruction the basis for student
guidance per sonality
8
A.) As to the period the evaluation
is conducted in, there are three
types:
1.) Formative Evaluation
2.) Summative Evaluation
3.) Diagnostic Evaluation
vs.
Assessment FOR
Learning
(Formative)
Formative Evaluation
Is a type of evaluation used to
monitor the learning progress of the
students during or after instruction.
11
Summative Evaluation
Is a type of evaluation usually given
at the end of a course or unit.
12
“When the cook taste the soup, that’s
Formative; When the guest taste the
soup, that’s Summative”
Assessment OF Learning
(Summative)
The purpose is:
To measure student achievement at a
point in time for reporting and
accountability
To sort students in rank order
To maximize student learning through
standardized tests, etc.
Assessment FOR Learning
(Formative)
The purpose is:
To promote further improvement of
student learning during the learning
process
To involve students in the ongoing
assessment of their own achievement
Primary Users

Typical Uses
Assessment of Learning Assessment for Learning
Certify competence Help students see and
Sort students hit the target
according to Help teachers identify
and respond to student
achievement needs.
Teacher’s Role
Assessment of Learning Assessment for Learning

administration targets
procedures Modify instruction
Use results to help Involve students in
student reach assessment

Student’s Role
Assessment of Learning Assessment for Learning
Study to meet Strive to understand the target
standards Act on classroom assessment to
Take the test improve
Strive for the highest Encourage success
score possible
Avoid failure
Diagnostic Evaluation
Is a type of evaluation given before
instruction. It aims to identify the
strengths and weaknesses of the
students regarding the topics to be
discussed.
20
Purpose of Diagnostic Evaluation
to determine the level of competence of the
students
to identify the students who have already
the knowledge about the lesson;
to determine the causes of learning
problems and formulate a plan for remedial
action.
21
As to whether or not the score of one
student will affect the grade of another
student, there are two types:
22
1.) Criterion-Referenced Test
Is a type of evaluation that
describes what an examinee can do
without reference to the
performance of others.
2.) Norm-Referenced Evaluation
Is a measure to find out how well a
student performs on a defined set
of tasks in relation with the
performance of other students who
take the same test.
Common Characteristics of NRT & CRT
Both require specification of the
achievement domain to be measured.
Both require a relevant and
representative sample of test items.
Both use the same types of test items.
25
Both used the same rules for item writing
(except for item difficulty).
Both are judge with the same qualities of
goodness (validity and reliability).
Both are useful in educational
assessment.
26
Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)
To bring in the desired uniformity, in grading
system
27
Applicability of the Grading System
29
Course: Usually referred to, as ‘papers’ is a
component of a programme.
Credit Based Semester System
(CBSS): Under the CBSS, the requirement
for awarding a degree or diploma or
certificate is prescribed in terms of number of
credits to be completed by the students.
30
Credit Point: It is the product of grade point
and number of credits for a course.
Credit: A unit by which the course work is
measured. It determines the number of hours
of instructions required per week. One credit
is equivalent to one hour of teaching (lecture
or tutorial) or two hours of practical work/field
work per week.
31
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): It is a measure of
overall cumulative performance of a student over all semesters.
The CGPA is the ratio of total credit points secured by a student
in various courses in all semesters and the sum of the total
credits of all courses in all the semesters. It is expressed up to
two decimal places.
Grade Point: It is a numerical weight allotted to each letter
grade on a 10-point scale.
Letter Grade: It is an index of the performance of students in a
said course. Grades are denoted by letters O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P
and F.
32
Programme: An educational programme leading to
award of a Degree, diploma or certificate.
Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA):
It is a measure of performance of work done in a
semester. It is ratio of total credit points secured by a
student in various courses registered in a semester
and the total course credits taken during that
semester. It shall be expressed up to two decimal
places.
33
Semester: Each semester will consist of 15-18
weeks of academic work equivalent to 90 actual
teaching days.
Transcript or Grade Card or Certificate: Based on
the grades earned, a grade certificate shall be issued
to all the registered students after every semester.
The grade certificate will display the course details
(code, title, number of credits, grade secured) along
with SGPA of that semester and CGPA earned till that
semester.
34
Semester System and Choice Based Credit
System
The semester system accelerates the
teaching-learning process and enables
vertical and horizontal mobility in learning.
The credit based semester system provides
flexibility in designing curriculum and
assigning credits based on the course
content and hours of teaching.
35
Types of Courses
36
Examination and Assessment
The UGC recommends the system to be
implemented in awarding the grades and CGPA
under the CBCS.
Letter Grades and Grade Points
Two methods -relative grading or absolute grading–
The UGC recommends a 10-point grading system.

38
Computer Based Test (CBT)
CBT is the dawn of online assessment in
examination industry.
In CBT, a use of computer is a medium,
or we can say technique to conduct
online Examination without pen & paper.
39
All major entrance examinations in India are
opting for CBT to make their assessment
procedure smooth and accurate.
National Testing Agency(NTA) is testing
organization to conduct entrance
examinations for admission/fellowship in
higher educational institutions. Like…UGC-
NET, CSIR-NET..etc
