Class 10 - Mathematics
Arithmetic Progressions Test 04

Solution

1. (b) 137
Explanation: First two terms of an AP are a = - 3 and a2 = 4
As we know, nth term of an AP is
an = a + (n - 1)d
where a = first term
an is nth term
d is the common difference
a2 = a + d
4=-3+d
d=7
Common difference, d = 7
a21 = a + 20d
= - 3 + (20)(7)
= 137
2. (b) 30o, 60o, 90o
Explanation: Let the three angles of a triangle be a - d, a and a + d
∴ a - d + a + a + d = 180o
⇒ 3a = 180o
⇒ a = 60o
Therefore, one angle is of 60o and other is 90o (given).
Let the third angle be xo, then
60o + 90o + xo = 180o
⇒ 150o + xo = 180o
⇒ xo = 180o - 150o = 30o
Therefore, the angles of the right-angled triangle are 30o, 60o, 90o

3. (a) 50
Explanation: Here a = 3 and d = 5.
∴ (a30 - a20) = (30 - 20)d = 10 × 5 = 50

4. True
Explanation: True
5. 55
6. Here, a = 5, d = 2 − 5 = −3

∵ l = a + (n − 1)d

−49 = 5 + (n − 1)(−3)

or, −49 − 5 = −3n + 3

or, 3n = 49 + 5 + 3
or, 3n = 57
or, n = = 19th term
57

7. a = 9, d = 10
∴ a12 = a + 11d

= 9 + 11(10) = 119
8. The general term of an AP is given by an = a + (n - 1)d.
Given that ,
a19 = 3a6
⇒ a + 18d = 3(a + 5d)
⇒ a + 18d = 3a + 15d

⇒ 2a = 3d .....(i)

Also given,
a9 = 19
⇒ a + 8d = 19
⇒ 2a + 16d = 38 [multiplying both sides by 2]

⇒ 3d + 16d = 38 [from (i)]

⇒ 19d = 38

⇒ d = 2

Substituting d = 2 in (i), we get a =3

Now, a = 3 & d = 2
Thus, the AP is 3,5,7,9,...

9. Let the first term be a and common difference be d.
an = a + (n -1)d
Here, a17 = a + 16d, a10 = a + 9d
Given that a17 = a10 + 7
or, a + 16d = a + 9d + 7
or, a + 16d - a - 9d = 7
or, 16d - 9d = 7
or, 7d = 7
or, d = 1
∴ The common difference = 1

10. Clearly, 1, 7, 13, 19,.... forms an A.P. with first term 1 and common difference 6.
Therefore, its nth term is given by
an = 1 + (n - 1) × 6 = 6n - 5
Also, 69, 68, 67, 66,... forms an A.P. with first term 69 and common difference -1.

a = 69 + (n - 1) × (-1) = - n + 70
n

The two A.Ps will have identical ftth terms, if

an = a n

⇒ 6n - 5 = -n + 70
⇒ 7n = 75

n= , which is not a natural number.

Hence, there is no value of n for which the two A.Ps will have identical terms.
11. All integers between 100 and 550, which are divisible by 9
= 108, 117, 126,.........., 549
First term (a) = 108
Common difference(d) = 117 - 108 = 9
Last term(an) = 549
⇒ a + (n - 1)d = 549
⇒ 108 + (n - 1)(9) = 549

⇒ 108 + 9n - 9 = 549

⇒ 9n = 549 + 9 - 108

⇒ 9n = 450

450
⇒ n = = 50
9

Sum of 50 terms =
n
[a + an ]
2
50
= [108 + 549]
2

= 25 × 657

= 16425
Now, sum of all integers between 100 and 550 which are not divisible by 9
= Sum of all integers between 100 and 550 - Sum of all integers between 100 and 550 which are divisible by 9
= [101 + 102 + 130 +......+ 549] - 16425
= - 16425
549×550 100×101

2 2

= 150975 - 5050 - 16425

= 129500
12. i. (b) 4000,5000,6000,...
ii. (c) 4000 and 1000
iii. (c) 15 days
iv. (d) 13000
v. (d) 28
