Grounding
Siemens medical solutions are sophisticated electronic systems that require attention to
grounding to ensure optimal equipment performance and reliability.
Equipment grounds to the Siemens equipment are specified to be #isolated# type as per-
mitted in nec 250-96(b) for the reduction of electrical noise. two (2) separate equipment
grounds are required:
1. A #safety ground#, to be sized in accordance with country specific (e.g. nec; IEC)
requirements, and bonded normally to electrical boxes, conduits, and non-
Siemens equipment (e.g. Options).
2. An #isolated ground# to be the same size as equipment phase conductors, and
insulated from deliberate or accidental connection to the #safety ground, building
steel, or other unknown voltage potentials# except at the point of grounding origin.
3. The #safety ground# and the #isolated ground# shall be bonded at the facility
service entrance, main distribution panel, or separately derived source.
In order to maintain the integrity of the RF-shielded examination room, the ground must
originate at the Siemens electronics cabinet ground bus (CCA cabinet), and should be
connected at both ends under Siemens supervision.
Non-current carrying conductive surfaces shall be grounded by a $6 a.w.g. insulated
green copper conductor installed in the metal raceway that contains the branch-circuit
conductors supplying the equipment.
A neutral conductor if present is not used for the line voltage connection to the Siemens
equipment. if the neutral conductor is provided it should not be electrically connected at
any point in the power distribution to the siemens equipment unless specifically required.
Unintentional neutral to ground bonds may violate local and national electrical codes as
well as create grounding problems.
The grounding of the system, esp. the provided facility ground should be prepared obey-
ing local regulations.
The internal grounding of the MR system must be setup with minimum ground loops in
order to prevent noise currents and general disturbances flowing through the grounding
path.
Planning
Reflections from light sources or daylight (windows) lead to completely false contrast and
brightness settings on the MR monitor.
Since the images and texts displayed on the screen are the basis for photographic docu-
mentation, the quality of images from this source will be negatively impacted.
Equally important for an optimal image quality on the MR monitor, and thus for the most
fatigue-free work procedure, are such factors as reflection and glare, light density, and
adequate illumination strength.
Reflections, glare
Glare considerably impairs the work performed at the screen.
Direct glare due to lamps or illumination, as well as various kinds of reflected glare, should
be prevented.
Appropriate planning is therefore highly important.
Intensity of illumination
The most important factors with respect to good lighting are the brightness level and
light density, which should result in reflection-free presentation and uniformity.
According to DIN 5035, a general illumination of 300 to 500 Lux is recommended for EDP
working areas. This corresponds to a fluorescent light output of approx. 30 W/m2.
The above values are referenced to a horizontal plane located 85 cm above the floor.
The room lighting fixtures should be divided into groups so that they can be adjusted to
daylight conditions.
AC voltage
The two RF filters on the RF panel are designed for a maximum AC voltage of 250V and
25 ampere.
Only lamps without phase angle control should be used.
RF Filter
RF filters must be provided, for example, when smoke detectors or other additional acces-
sories are to be installed in the examination room.
The filters can be obtained through the spare parts department in Erlangen.
General
RF-shielding is required in the examination room, because :
- all international and/or national RF-guidelines for the prevention of RF-interferences
caused by MR system operation have to be observed.
- interference-free operation of the MR system despite RF-interference in the operating
frequency range of the installation has to be ensured.
Route all electrical lines in the RF-room via RF filters.
Equip doors leading to the RF-room with aindication switch.
To prevent extraneous electrical fields in the examination room, the following should not
be installed or used:
- Telephone connections
- Lines for in-house intercom systems
- Fluorescent lights
- Energy saving light bulbs
The RF-integrity has to be tested and the filter plate must be installed after completion of
the RF-room.
NOTE All components of the RF-room and inside the RF-room have to be
made from non-magnetizable material. Follow manufacturer’s
specifications and instructions.
Additional information regarding modular RF-rooms may be obtained from the manufac-
turer.

NOTE A 5mm thick ferromagnetic steel plate made out of ST 37 with the
size of 2800mm X 2560mm must be installed dirctly underneath
the permanent magnet position prior to the magnet installation.
Refer to "Ferromagnetic steel plate dimension" on Page 6 - 8.
The floor level of the RF-room could differ from the floor level outside the RF-room
depending on:
- the RF-room door opens toward the outside (refer to cross-section A-A, Fig. 4)
- or the RF-room opens toward the inside (refer to cross-section A-A Fig. 5).
The underflooring in the RF-room areas should be lowered accordingly.

General
NOTE The air conditioning unit must be planned according to DIN 1946
(Germany) or local/country/hospital specific codes.
NOTE Do not connect the air conditioning system to the power supply
for the MR installation.
NOTE Ensure that air exhausting from the air conditioning vents in the
examination room does not blow onto the magnet.
Air filtration
Outside air polluted by dust particles or chemicals causes considerable damage to mag-
netic carriers and devices. In special cases, the air quality must be analyzed prior to con-
figuring the air conditioning unit.
The following values should be maintained in the MR suite:
For fresh air intake, filters, class EU4 ( DIN 24185/part 2 ), should be installed by the
customer to filter out dust particles of >10 mm .
The guidelines for chemical purity of the air vary from country to country. If not stated
otherwise, the values given are based on the German MAK values (ZH1/401).
The same requirements apply to rooms used for storing data carriers.
The MAK values are issued bythe Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Unfallforschung
(Ministry for Occupational Safety and Accident Analysis) in Dortmund for employee
protection . The values represent the maximum concentration of gases, vapors, and dust
particles in the air which do not present health hazards to the employee population.
