Introduction of adipose tissue:

 Adipose tissue is a specialised connective tissue

consisting of Lipid rich cells called adipocytes.

 As it comprises about 20 to 25 percent of total

body cells in healthy individuals.

 These are the main energy stores in the form of

fats or lipids.
Location of Adipose tissues:
 Adipose tissue is located within two
compartments of the body :
 Subcutaneous fat:
This is embedded in the Connective tissue under the
skin .
This is also called Parietal fat .
 Visceral fat:
It surrounds the internal organs like eyeballs and
kidneys.
 Marrow fat :
It surrounds the bone marrow of the organism.
Adipocytes and their types:

 Adipocytes known as fat cells are the building

blocks of adipose tissues .

TYPES :
1. White adipocytes.
2. Brown adipocytes .
3. Beige adipocytes.
White adipocytes:

 These are also known as white fat cells that are main
types of fat cells in our body .

 These are present in white adipose tissues .

 There shape ranges from spherical to oval.

 Largest part of the cell is filled with a single lipid droplet

containing many mitochondria in the cytoplasm.
Brown adipocytes:

 Brown adipose tissue contains these adipocytes also

known as brown fat cells.

 In contrast to white adipocytes, these are smaller in size .

 Lipid is contained in multiple lipid droplets .

 They have a large number of mitochondria and blood

vessels in them , hence gibe brown colour.
Beige adipocytes :

 Beige adipocytes are a distinct type of fat cells

present in beige adipose tissues.

 It has the characteristics of both brown and white

fat cells.

 They exist mainly in Parietal fats but can also be

found in visceral fats.
Synthesis of Adipocytes:

 Adipose tissues are synthesised through a process

called Adipogenesis.
 This occurs when pre adipocytes which are
precursor cells , differentiate into mature
adipocytes.
 Process involved are hyperplasia and hypertrophy.
 It is also influenced by hormones, diet and
genetic factors.
Functions of Adipose tissue:
 Adipose tissues and several important functions:

Store Hormonal
energy in regulation
Provide such as
the form insulation leptin
of fat

Cushion Maintain Generate

around body heat when
organs temperature needed
Health effects:

 Obesity:
Excess white adipose tissue can contribute to obesity.
This can lead to various health conditions like :
1. Heart Disease.
2. Type 2 diabetes.

 Metabolic benefit:
Beige and brown adipocytes have metabolic benefits as they
burn calories to generate heat.
