Ground Turkey Recall Across Massachusetts North Shore

Shady Brook Farms Pulls Products Off Stop And Shop Shelves Due To Possible Health Risk

Wichita, KS (February 22, 2022)—On Monday, February 21, tests confirmed the presence of Escherichia
coli O157:H7 bacteria on a production line at the Shady Brook Farms meatpacking facility in Abington,
MA. Investigators were able to trace the distribution of affected ground turkey shipments to Stop and
Shop retailers across the North Shore. In response to the outbreak, the company has recalled all ground
turkey products distributed to Stop and Shop markets after January 31, 2022.

E. Coli causes a diarrheal illness often associated with bloody stool and accompanied by severe stomach
cramps or vomiting. Although most healthy adults recover within a week, some may experience
worsening symptoms that develop into HUS (hemolytic uremic syndrome); a form of kidney failure. In
such cases hospitalization results; a more likely development among children and the elderly.

Suspicions of an E.Coli outbreak began to mount as reports of a stomach bug equivalent sickness spread
across college campuses on the North Shore. Health officials launched an investigation when Harlan
Matthews, a seventy-three-year-old male, became hospitalized with HUS at the Danvers Medical Center.

Once Shady Brook discovered the contamination on their production line, CEO David MacLennan issued a
statement on company safety measures:

“Since the genesis of the FDA’s HACCP plan to ensure regular inspection of meatpacking facilities we
have taken necessary precautions to avoid the spread of contamination. That being said, despite our
routine microbial testing we were unable to detect the presence of E. Coli before sending our product out.
In response, we have implemented increased testing measures on a twice-a-week basis to ensure the
safety of our product”.

Shady Brook keeps source meat accountability high by providing public contacts with their turkey farmers.
From the way the turkey is fed to the way it is packaged, the consumer is at the heart of Shady Brook's
operations.

For those who have Shady Brook turkey dated January 31-February 21, dispose of the product. If it was
purchased from Stop and Shop, Shady Brook encourages consumers to return to the store seeking a full
refund. For additional information please visit Cargill.com under the news release page. Please reach out
