INDOOR SPORTS
COMPLEX
Indoor sports complexes are climate-controlled
environments with superior playing conditions that allow
everyone, from players to coaches to spectators, to be a
part of the experience 24/7/365.
INDOOR SPORTS COMPLEX

● Types of sports complex: ● Objectives of indoor sports complex

To provide sports as well as

The educational sports To provide users an affordable,

campus - sports are being comfortable, and enjoyable
taught experience

The community sports Integration of built form with the

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS & GUIDELINES
Based on three essential components of the project.
● Function and program
● Environmental Sustainability
● Materiality, form and aesthetics
● Utilities and Services
Plumbing (refer to the latest MWSC guidelines)
Electrical (refer to latest electrical guidelines)
Fire ( refer to MNDF fire guidelines)

FUNCTION AND PROGRAM
● To identify the sports and programming that the
complex will host is a must.
● Helps to determine the appropriate space allocation
for different activities, ensuring smooth coordination
and transition between various sports and events.

1. Zoning
● Zone one: The playing field
● Zone two: The spectator seating and standing areas
● Zone three: The internal concourses, restaurants, bars and
other seating areas
● Zone four: The circulation area between the stadium
structure and the perimeter fence
● Zone five: The open space outside the perimeter fence
FUNCTION AND PROGRAM ●
Orientation
Events start in the
morning and
evening.
● East west
orientation is not
preferred
● Sun movement is
from East to West
due South and
Sun will obstruct
the player’s eye.
● Therefore,North-S
outh orientation is
best.
Zoning Examples
Optimize building orientation
to take advantage of natural
light and heat
FUNCTION AND PROGRAM
2. Planning for players, spectators and vendors
● Adequate seating area for audiences.
● Dedicated areas for vendors to purchase sporting equipment,
merchandise and other promotional items.

3. Events
● The championship match and victory celebration.
● Special field for championship events that includes extra
seating and high-quality features.
● An amphitheatre or stage area for award ceremonies, special
announcements etc
FUNCTION AND PROGRAM
4.4. Smooth flow

Facility flows correctly when it accomplishes three key goals:

● Easy to navigate for people of all abilities.
● Adequate visibility throughout the facility and wayfinding devices.
● Safe and secure in all areas to reduce chances of injury or theft.

5. Relationship of indoor and outdoor space

● Visual connection between indoor and outdoor activity
areas.
● Facilities, the outdoor space and pedestrian and vehicular
approaches can be readily visible from main circulation
routes.
FUNCTION AND PROGRAM
6. Fences and Boundaries
● Boundary walls should promote urban interactions.
● Rooftop or ground play spaces should have perimeter
safety rails.
● Fences with vision panels to discourage climbing for views
over.

7. Safety First
● Facilitate programming and sports for guests is top priority,
but fails if safety not prioritized
● A focus on safety throughout layout design.
● Prioritise safety and protection features into the facility
during the early planning stages.

Amenities Needed for Sports Complexes and Athletic Fields - CR Studio Design
MATERIALS Artificial Turf :

✅Pros of Artificial Turf

● Field turf doesn’t require mowing

● Lower maintenance costs

❌Cons of Artificial Turf

● Turf can get hot and make the playing area feel hotter
● Some bacteria can live on turf for 90+ days
Polyurethane rubberized flooring:
✅Pros of Polyurethane Flooring
● Urethane is easy to clean.
● Non-porous and waterproof.

❌Cons of Polyurethane Flooring

● High sensitivity to moisture. Exposure to moisture and
wetness can create bubbles and blemishes on the https://www.tvs-sportssurfaces.com/polyurethane-floors/

● Some should be wider (say 0.4 m x 1.8 m) to

accommodate larger sports bags, children’s
buggies and mobility aids.

● Storage: A total of 12.5% of the hall floor area is

required as a minimum for sports equipment.

● Carefully planned seating arrangement can increase revenue,
enhance a venue's overall appeal, and ultimately increase
participation rates.

ACOUSTICS
● To enhance the sound eminence through adjustment of spaces,
building materials and other architectural aspect
● Since sports complex are built with hard wall floors and high
ceilings, large amount of acoustically absorptive material has to
be applied

Reverberation time: The time required for the sound to decay in a closed space
Requirements for reverberation times: Sound absorbing treatment: To reduce reflected sound
Total room absorption:
● Indoor sports hall < 1.5 𝑎 = ∑𝑠𝛼
● Gymnasium < 1.5 Where a = Total Room Absorption
● Swimming pool < 2.0 s = Surface Area
● Multi-purpose halls < 0.8-1.2 α = Sound Absorption Coefficient at given Frequency

Sound absorbing materials:

Application of sound-absorbing materials
● Acoustic foam panels
● Mineral wool

COLOR
Fitness
● Red: action colour
-Bold, vigorous and stimulating
-Raises blood pressure and stimulates appetite, stamina, and strength
-Red in sports such as tae-kwon-do, Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing, and
freestyle wrestling.
● Orange: stimulating and pleasing to the senses.
● Blue: Blue objects appear less heavy; suited for heavier weight lifting equipment.
● Green: Suited for pilates studio or yoga studio.
● Chess which needs focus, cool color like blue or green makes a calm and focused
environment.
● Purple and lavender: off-beat colours
- some of the best colours for meditation rooms
Light Neutrals: For walls and ceilings to help reflect and distribute artificial and natural
light, creating a well-lit environment.
Balancing Intensity: Balancing bright colors with more subdued tones to avoid
overwhelming the space.

SAFETY ISSUES
Security Cameras:

● Installing security cameras is one way to immediately reduce the

risks at your sports facility.
● Helps to ensure the safety of your guests, your property, and your
staff members.

Inspection :

● Keeping a log of inspection dates and problems identified.

● Look for frayed cables, loose bolts, weak welds, rough edges, or any
excessive wear and tear .
SAFETY ISSUES
Cleanliness:
● Keeping places free of debris, filth, and other slippery surfaces
● When running a facility, ensure the flooring is free of filth and
water that could cause individuals to slip.

Safety Padding:

● Invest in wall and stage padding and make sure the padding
on all sports equipment, scorers tables, and bleachers is in
good condition and properly installed.

https://bisoninc.com/pages/facility-safety
SAFETY ISSUES
Equipment Storage:

● All balls should be safely off the floor in a cart or bag

and larger equipment should be properly stored in
specially-designed transport carts or attached to the
wall.

Equipment Age:

● Observing the equipment in use is advised.

● New equipment may be indicated if older equipment
may not meet current standards or activity levels.

https://bisoninc.com/pages/facility-safety
SAFETY ISSUES
Fire:

● The exit places and access routes to the escape

stairs be clearly described with direction signs
and made visible with illuminated signs.

● adjacent regular structure

● the access of fire trucks

● the sprinkler system

● presence of directional signs

ROOFS
sUniform, preferably white with more than 90% reflectance value
Make provision for acoustic absorbency. Reverberation time
should not exceed two seconds at mid-frequency.

The roof decking should span the main beams to achieve

minimum visual obstruction.

Where unavoidable, internet linings or suspended ceilings must

be impact –resistant.

● Suspended ceilings are generally inappropriate for sports hall. Mill-finish standing beam aluminum roof
finish is likely to provide the best value for money for most sports buildings and can be curved, avoiding
interruption of the ridge.
