Syllabus (CHEMISTRY)

THEORY: (Maj0r)

1. ATOMIC STRUCTURE: (15L)


Bohr’s theory, its limitations and atomic spectrum of hydrogen atom; Sommerfeld’s Theory, de
Broglie equation, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, Photoelectric Effect, A brief introduction
to
wave mechanical model of atomic structure (Schrodinger Equation only) Auf- Bau Principle,
Hund’s
Rule of Maximum Spin Multiplicity, Pauli’s Exclusion Principle, Electronic configuration of
elements
(upto Z = 30). Determination of Ground State Term Symbols of elements and ions (upto Z=30).
2. PERIODIC PROPERTIES: (20L)
Modern IUPAC Periodic table, Effective nuclear charge, screening effects andpenetration,
Slater’s
rules, atomic radii, ionic radii. Ionization potential, electron affinity andelectronegativity
(Pauling’s,
Mulliken’s and Allred- Rochow’s scales). Group trends and periodic trends in these properties in
respect of s- , p- block elements.
3. CONCEPT OF ACID-BASE THEORIES: (15L)
Acid- Base concept: Arrhenius concept, theory of solvent system (in H2O, NH3,SO2 and HF),
Bronsted- Lowry’s concept, relative strength of acids, Pauling’s rules.Lux- Flood concept, Lewis
concept, HSAB principle. Thermodynamic acidity parameters, Drago- Wayland equation.
4. REDOX CHEMISTRY: (10L)
Ion- electron method of balancing equation of redox reaction. Elementary idea onstandard redox
potentials with sign conventions, Nernst equation (without derivation).
Influence of complex formation, precipitation and change of pH onredox potentials;formal
potential. Feasibility of a redox titration, redox potential at theequivalencepoint, redox
indicators.
Redox potential diagram (Latimer and Frost diagrams) ofcommon elements and their
applications.
Disproportionation and comproportionationreactions (typical examples).
Solubility product principle, common ion effect and their applications to theprecipitation and
separation of common metallic ions as hydroxides, sulfides,phosphates, carbonates, sulfates and
halides.

PRACTICALS: (major)

1. Estimation of carbonate and hydroxide present together in mixture.


2. Standardization of KMnO4 by Oxalic acid.
3. Estimation of Fe(II) using standardized KMnO4 solution.
4. Estimation of Fe(II) using standardized K2Cr2O7 solution.

Theory: (minor)

1. Vectors: Vector algebra. Scalar and vector products. Derivatives of a vector with respect to a
parameter.

2. Ordinary Differential Equations: 1st order homogeneous differential equations. 2nd order
homogeneous differential equations with constant coefficients. (4 Lectures)
3. Laws of Motion: Frames of reference. Newton’s Laws of motion. Dynamics of a system of
particles.
4. Centre of Mass. (7 Lectures)
5. Momentum and Energy: Conservation of momentum. Work and energy. Conservation of energy.
Motion of
rockets. (5 Lectures)
6. Rotational Motion: Angular velocity and angular momentum. Torque. Conservation of angular
momentum. (4 Lectures)
7. Gravitation: Newton’s Law of Gravitation. Motion of a particle in a central force field (motion is
in a
plane, angular momentum is conserved, areal velocity is constant). Kepler’s Laws (statement only).
Satellite in circular orbit and applications. Geosynchronous orbits. Basic idea of global positioning
system (GPS). Weightlessness. Physiological effects on astronauts. (7 Lectures)
8. Oscillations: Simple harmonic motion. Differential equation of SHM and its solutions. Kinetic
and
Potential Energy, Total Energy and their time averages. Damped oscillations. (4 Lectures)
9. Elasticity: Hooke’s law - Stress-strain diagram - Elastic moduli-Relation between elastic constants
-
Poisson’s Ratio-Expression for Poisson’s ratio in terms of elastic constants - Work done in stretching
and
work done in twisting a wire – Twisting couple on a cylinder - Determination of Rigidity modulus by
static torsion – Torsional pendulum-Determination of Rigidity modulus and moment of inertia - q, η
and
by Searles method. (5 Lectures)
10. Special Relativity: Constancy of speed of light. Postulates of Special Theory of Relativity. Length
contraction. Time dilation. Relativistic addition of velocities. (5 Lectures)

c) Theory of Complexometric Titration of Ca2+ and Mg2+ by Na2EDTA, Hardness of Water.
