Box Jellyfish
Box Jellyfish
Pink Comb jellies swim along the surface of shallow and deep waters in the lower
Chesapeake Bay area throughout the late summer and fall. These golf-ball-sized
marine critters have barrel-shaped combs that form brilliant iridescent bands as
they glide through the water. Instead of stinging, their tentacles contain colloblasts,
which generate a sticky, glue-like material to capture prey. Because they have both
male and female organs, they can fertilize themselves. The pink to brownish
translucent Comb Jelly is four inches long and feeds on sea walnuts, planktonic
creatures, and fish larvae.
