From the front of the Choir

A person who sings in a choir, plays in an orchestra or

takes to the stage is more likely to make good moral
choices in the future. Look at the traits that a choir
member should have in order to be a good member of the
choir team, such as punctuality, commitment, responsibility,
self-awareness, trust, attentiveness, consideration for
others, listening skills, sense of the whole, sense of
humour. All these good traits, without any doubt, build good
choirs. This is the main reason, BPK PENABUR - as one of
the most leading education institutions in Indonesia - has a
desire to again make PENABUR INTERNATIONAL
CHOIR FESTIVAL (PICF) happen for the fourth time. First
organized in 2013, PENABUR International Choir Festival
(PICF) is a competition based festival that highlights the
growing choral phenomenon with the hope to foster and
enrich both traditional and contemporary choral music to
the International community. #PICF 2019 will be held in
Jakarta from 3rd to 7th of September.

★INTERNATIONAL CHORAL COMPETITION
The choirs will be evaluated by national and international juries.
Evaluation System is based on the Musica Mundi System
40.00 - 59.99 Bronze
60.00 - 79.99 Silver
80.00 - 100 Gold

#PICF 2019 Choir Competition has 10 categories, which are:

SCHOOL CATEGORIES
A. KINDERGARTEN CHOIR
• Choir prepares 2 pieces
• Unisono / S1 S2
• The maximum actual singing is 10 minutes
• Age limit tolerance is maximum 1 year and the number of singers
within its limit is 10% from the total

B. PRIMARY SCHOOL CHOIR

• Choir prepares 2 pieces.

• Max 50 singers
• The maximum actual singing is 10 minutes
• Age limit tolerance is maximum 1 year and the number of singers
within its limit is 10% from the total

C. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR

• Choir prepares 2 pieces

• Max 50 singers
• The maximum actual singing is 10 minutes
• Age limit tolerance is maximum 1 year and the number of singers
within its limit is 10% from the total

D. SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR

• The ensembles perform a folklore program typical for the
choirs home country
• Choir may use traditional instruments, traditional costumes, and
choreography

I. GOSPEL AND SPIRITUAL

• Choir should present Gospel & Spiritual songs from traditional
Afro-America
• Choir prepares 3 pieces
• The maximum actual singing is 15 minutes
• One of the songs choices should be presented in a-cappella

J. MUSICA SACRA
• Choir prepares composition of sacred music
• This category refers to Renaissance until modern sacred songs
• Choir prepares 3 pieces.
• The maximum actual singing is 15 minutes
• One of the songs choices should be presented in
a-cappella

★ FESTIVAL

• Choir Clinic
45 minutes private class with the choir expert.
Limited participants only, admitted by the artistic committees.
Fee USD 100.
Registrations will be confirmed upon receipt of payment.
Certificate of participation will be given.

• Master Cla!
20 minutes master class for each participant.
Active Participant Fee: USD 75/ per choir
Passive Participant Fee: USD 10/ person.
Registration will be confirmed upon receipt of payment.
Limited participants only, admitted by the artistic committees.
Certificate of participation will be given.

• Workshop
Presented by selected Adjudicators or Experts.
Certificate of participation will be given.

Every choir may send a maximum of 4 representatives to join this
activity.
FREE of charge.
During the event, choir will be given time to consult and ask for
review from jury about their performance.

• Celebration Concert
The Artistic Committee will select the choirs based on their CVs
and achievements to perform in front of the other participating
choirs.

• Friendship Concert
Participating choirs will have the chance to join in the
festivities and participate in the Friendship Concert,
admitted by the Artistic Committees.
Each performing choir shall present a 10 minute
programme that showcase their country’s music and
culture.

• Sunday Service
Selected choirs will be offered to join the service at
local churches in Jakarta.

• Outreach Concert
Choir performances in selected public places.
The participating choirs will be expected to perform for
10 minutes.

• Award Ceremony
Announcement of winners all categories
The winner of categories will perform one song in the
Award Ceremony

• Grand Prize and Closing Ceremony

The respective category winners can participate in
competition for the Grand Prize.
The Juries have the right to nominate further choirs for
participation.
Programme: two freely chosen a-capella pieces, one
piece that the choir already performed and a new piece
that the choir never performed.
Those two pieces must be confirmed by the Artistic
Committee.
Actual singing time maximum 8 minutes.

 GENERAL RULES
CATEGORIES:
• All choirs are eligible to compete in a maximum of two competition
categories.
• For choirs competing in two categories, the repertoire for each
category must be different.

AGE LIMIT
• Choirs who represent school, church, or who take part in a
category with an age limit MUST send a statement letter which is
signed by the school’s principal or another authorised official.
• The letter must include the date of birth and the age of each
member.
• The choir will be disqualified if the committee finds any difference
between the details in the statement letter and the performance on
stage, and no refund will be given.

SCORE AND SONG PROGRAMME:

• The program that will be performed on stage must be an original
work for choir not a reduction from orchestra.
• The participants must send 5 (five) sets of song programs of the
song that will be performed. 4 (four) sets will be returned to the
participants after the awarding ceremony, and 1 (one) will be kept
by the committee for the archive. The committee will not send the
score after closing day.
• All songs MUST be approved by the Artistic Committee. The ones
that are not approved MUST be replaced.
• To avoid problems during the preparation, it is advised to fill in the
artistic data and send the song(s) in advance.
• The COPYRIGHT of the song is the responsibility of the
participants. The committee is not responsible for any song’s
copyright that will be performed or the use of the song with photo
copy.
• The participants must come along with the written license to use
the song(s) from the composer.
• It is advised that the participants buy the original score or send the
receipts for a minimum of 5 sets of scores to the committee for the
songs that have been published by the publisher.
• For choir who uses instruments, the score for the instruments is
COMPULSORY to be included in the choir score.

INSTRUMENTS/ ACCOMPANIMENTS:
• The committee will only provide an acoustic piano. (Please inform
the committee for the use of the instrument)
• A maximum of 3 instruments without ‘definite pitch’ can be used.
• Only categories A, B and C may use accompaniment for both
songs.
• Only live accompaniments and original accompaniments are
permitted.
• The use of any kind of playback or soundtrack is strictly prohibited.

STAGE REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

• The schedule and venue of each group will be informed in August
2019. The schedule for stage rehearsal is only 5 minutes for each
category.
• IMPORTANT! The schedule will be prioritised for participants who
have sent the arrival details early. There will be no replacement of
the performance and rehearsal schedule from the ones that have
been decided.

PRIZES
• The participants who receive Gold medals with the Third Highest
score in each category will earn a certificate, a medal, and
development funds.
• The participants who receive Gold medals with the Second Highest
score in each category will earn a certificate, a medal, and
development funds.
• The participants who receive Gold medals with the First Highest
score in each category will earn a certificate, a medal, a trophy and
development funds.

SPECIAL AWARD
• A special reward will be presented to a conductor or choir group
who shows an outstanding quality during performance. Each
participant who is chosen will receive a certificate and development
funds

EVALUATION
• This competition uses scoring system with the following criteria

A. Intonation B. Sound quality
C. Fidelity to score D. Overall artistic impression

• The final score is the total score of the average

score of each jury member.
• The jury’s decision is final and cannot be

 REGISTRATION
The following documents must be sent via email to info@picf.or.id

01 before the closing of the registration (the subject of the email is the
name of the choir):
- Registration form that has been filled in completely and correctly
- The receipt of registration fee payment with the name of your choir in
the notes field
-Choir social media account (e.g. www.facebook.com/bpkpenabur)

The following documents must be sent via email to info@picf.or.id after

02 the registration confirmation from the committee (the subject of the

email is Registration number-Choir name-Name of the documents)
- The most current picture of the choir with good quality to be printed in
the program book and to be published in the website (Min. 2Mb and min.
res 300 dpi)
- The most current picture of the conductor with good quality to be
printed in the program book and to be published in the website (Min.
2Mb and min. res 300 dpi)
-Choir profile with the members’ age information

The following document MUST be sent by the latest Monday, 8 April

03 2019 via email to info@picf.or.id/ picf2019@gmail.com (the subject of
the email is Registration number-Choir name-Name of the
documents)

The following documents MUST be sent via post to the secretariat

04 address right after getting the committee’s approval:
- 5 sets of the ORIGINAL MUSIC SCORE of each song which will be
performed for the song which has been published by the publisher
or
- 5 sets of score with the license from the Composer/Arranger of the
song that will be performed (the license is mandatory to be sent)
or
-5 sets of the score copy of the song from a free website with the
evidence.

IMPORTANT!
-The committee will give the approval confirmation for the song program
that will be performed, so your choir will have enough time for
preparation and will perform excellently.
- Any song that is not approved by the committee cannot be performed.
- Any change in the song program, order, or basic tone must be sent to
the committee by Monday, 6 May 2019 at the latest
- The delivery of the score via e-mail will not be processed
SPECIFIC REGISTRATION PROGRAM
All participants taking part in #PICF2019 are to settle the registration fee
for each category which is IDR 2,000,000 for each activity or category.
The registration for #PICF2019 will be closed by Monday, 8 April 2019.
*The committee will close the registration even before the time limit if the
performance slot is full.
EARLY BIRD 1
CASH BACK 100% of Registration Fee of 1 category and Free Choir
Clinic for choir who registers and sends the transfer receipts, application
form, and choir photo by Monday, 28 January 2019.
EARLY BIRD 2
CASH BACK 50% of Registration Fee of 1 category for choir who
registers and sends the transfer receipts, application form, and choir
photo by Monday, 25 February 2019.
*Cash back will be given after the choir has performed in PICF 2019.
