1) The random variable X can take on values 3, 4, 5, 6, and 20.

The probabilities for these are the

inverses of their values. Find the expected value and variance of X.

2) Let the random variable X represent the number of red balls in two draws without replacement
from a bag of seven balls, three of which are red. What is the pdf of X ? Find E(X).

3) For the bag in problem (2), if 10 draws are made with replacement, what is the probability that
between two and five red balls will be counted?

Question 1:

The random variable X can have the values 0 or 1, and the random variable Y can have the values 0,
1, or 2. The joint probability distribution of X and Y is given below:

0 1 2

0 0.1 0.35 0.15

1 0.2 0.1 0.1

a) Construct the marginal probabilities

c) Are X and Y independent? Explain!

d) Find the variance of 2X + 3Y; Var (2 X  3Y ) = ________________________________

Question 2:

30 % of all instructors seem weird to students.

a) If 20 instructors are randomly selected, then what is the probability that between 6 and 8 (6 and 8
included) of them seem weird to students? Use a binomial table to find the answer.

b) If 23 instructors are randomly selected, then what is the probability that between 6 and 8 (6 and 8
included) of them seem weird to students? Use your calculator to get the exact answer.

Question 3:

A bag has one white, two blue, and three red balls. Two balls are drawn in succession, at random,
without replacement, from the bag. The random variable X represents the number of blue balls
among the two drawn balls, and the random variable Y represents the number of red balls in the
second draw. The joint probability distribution of X and Y is given below:
0 1 2
0 1
10
A 1
15
1 3

b) Show that the number A is 1 3 by using a property of the joint probability distribution.

c) Find the marginal probabilities.

d) Are X and Y independent? Explain!

e) Find the variance of 2X + 3Y, Var (2 X  3Y ) .

f) Find COV ( X , Y ) .

g) At least how many times must the experiment of drawing two balls be done so that two blue balls
will appear at least once with probability equal or greater than 0.9 ?

Question 3:

The probability that Abdullah will eat rose jam at breakfast is 0.55. What is the probability that for
the next 20 days Abdullah will eat rose jam between 11 and 16 times? (11 and 16 included).

a) Find the answer using the binomial table

b) Find the answer using your calculator (this will take 5 minutes), and compare.
