1-3 General Arrangement

The Qdrive 1S102D Driver is designed to drive Stirling or acoustic Stirling (displacerless) coldheads
by mechanically compressing and acoustically expanding helium gas for the Stirling cycle. It can also
be DRIVEN by a Stirling engine pressure wave. The driver can be used with other acoustic loads or
sources as well, but regardless of the type of load, maximum pV output cannot be obtained unless the
load is matched to the driver.

1-3-1 Physical Description

The 1S102D driver consists of a 1S102M STAR™ resonant linear motor-alternator, with a piston that
inserts into a matching cylinder. The motor and cylinder are pre-assembled. The small annular gap (≤
0.001 inch) between the piston O.D. and the cylinder I.D. forms a non-contacting clearance seal,
acoustically isolating the front side of the piston from the back side. For most applications, the
cylinder is itself mounted into an assembly that includes a pressure vessel enclosing the motor, and
enclosing a load which is addressed by the front side of the piston. The 1S102D may be used with any
combination of inert gases, such as helium and argon, and other common gases such as air and

nitrogen, within its normal operating temperatures. Hydrogen should not be used with the 1S102D as it
will destroy the magnets.

1-3-3 Operation Principle

The driver operates as follows (motor mode):
1. Alternating voltage is applied to the motors. Current flows through the motor windings,
causing a magnetic field in the iron they surround.
2. The applied field, oscillating between two orientations with the reversing electrical input,
pushes and pulls on permanent magnets mounted on the moving assembly, (called the piston-
plunger).
3. When the applied voltage frequency is close to the resonant frequency of the motors and load
(combined!), the pistons oscillate and power is delivered through the pistons to the acoustic
load by phase separation of the current and piston displacement.
4. Typically, when connected to an acoustic load like a cryogenic coldhead, helium gas is
cyclically compressed and expanded relative to the mean (charge pressure) by the pistons of
the driver to power a thermodynamic cycle for refrigeration.
5. The driver motors and coldhead heat exchangers are usually cooled by local water. USE OF A
COOLED ACOUSTIC LOAD, INCLUDING A HEAT EXCHANGER NEAR THE DRIVER
INTERFACE IS ESSENTIAL FOR FULL-POWER OPERATION OF DRIVER WITHOUT
AUXILIARY COOLING BY USER

The driver operates as follows when used as an alternator:

6. Alternating pressure is applied to the pistons. The force of the pressure (and associated gas
flow) causes the pistons to oscillate. NOTE: the frequency of oscillation is a system variable –
applied pressure frequency must be close to the system resonance for effective operation.
7. The oscillatory movement causes changing flux links between the magnets moving with the
piston and the iron stator.
8. The reversing flux changes in the iron induce voltage in the windings.
9. If connected to a load resistance, the voltage causes current to flow and power to be delivered
from the alternator.
10. Power factor (phase of voltage and current) can be corrected by use of an appropriate capacitor
in series with the alternator and load. Use only motor-run type capacitors of sufficient voltage
rating.

2 INSTALLATION & SET UP

2-1 Unpacking 1S102D
Carefully open top of container and remove packing materials. Lift driver out without straining
attached cables.

2-2 Site Conditions & Services

• Do not install 1S102D in an area subject to splashing water and/or dust.

5
Operation Manual: 1S102D-22398-A
• Install 1S102D in a ventilated area free from any exhausted heat accumulation (from the 1S102D
itself or other source).
• Do not place heat sensitive objects in surroundings of 1S102D.

2-2-1 Ambient Temperature Condition

The ambient temperature must be between 32°F (0°C) and 86 °F (30°C) to get the specified capacity.
The maximum relative humidity is 95%.

< Warning about overheating >

The (user-supplied) surface enclosing the motor should not exceed 45 C. If
passive convection proves inadequate in a particular installation, this must be
ensured by user-supplied active water-cooling (tubing wrapped around the
housing) or by active air-cooling. Failure to provide adequate cooling to the
housing could result in damage to the motor.

2-2-3 Power Source

Ensure the correct power source (or load) is available for the 1S102D. See Table 1.1 for the system
power requirements. Power source for motor mode use should have continuously variable voltage, to
ensure safe startup.

2-3 Electrical Power Supply Connections

< Warning about electric shock >

Make sure the power supply conforms to 1S102D power specifications before
using equipment. Using the 1S102D with a non-conforming power supply may
result in shock or malfunction.

See Table 1.1 for power requirements. Driver has two pigtail cables, one black and one white,
connected to the motor coils.

3 OPERATION PROCEDURES
3-1 Set Up
The 1S102D driver should be firmly mounted with its mounting holes away from sources of heat, dust,
or moisture. IMPORTANT: unit requires some convective cooling on motor housing! The
ambient temperature should not exceed 35°C, and the relative humidity should not exceed 95%.

Connect electrical power source as described in Table 1.1 and section 2-3. Connect water source as
described in section 2-2, if required.

6
Operation Manual: 1S102D-22398-A

3-2 Start Up
If driver is operated as a motor with an unknown load, apply voltage very slowly and monitor stroke.
DO NOT OPERATE driver if it overstrokes (plunger contacting end stops). Stroke and applied
voltage are not proportional when load is changed.

If operated as an alternator, a suitable non-linear load must be applied to maintain safe stroke. A
fixed-value resistor is NOT suitable, as its power absorption is quadratic with voltage (and therefore
also with stroke): no stable crossover point exists between source and load with identical dependencies
on the linking variable.

Operation should be very smooth, with relatively low noise and vibration, as long as the 1S102D is
secured to a rigid or sufficiently massive object (since the 1S102D is a single-motor driver, it has
unbalanced moving mass). If significant noise or vibration is observed, discontinue operation and
consult CHART. Operation should also be stopped if cooling ceases for any reason. Overheating and
damage of components can occur very quickly in the absence of active cooling.

3-3 Shut Down

To shut down driver, simply turn off voltage source. This can be done abruptly. Unit can normally be
restarted at any time, or shut on and off repeatedly, without damage.
