Introduction

1. Function of oil
Oil has various roles for cooling, rust inhibition, anti-corrosion and lu-
brication. Oil deteriorates and must be replaced periodically to function
correctly.

Lubricates to reduce friction

Cools engine components.

Protects from rust and acid corrosion.

Seals the space between a piston and cylinder,

reduces gas leakage.

Cleans the engine of contaminated materials such as

carbon and sludge and disperses them in engine oil.

2. Components of engine oils

Oils are made up of base oil and additives. Additives account for nearly 40% of engine oil in volume. They greatly
affect characteristics and performance.

Base oil
There are four kinds of base oil, determined by their production method: mineral, high VI mineral, synthetic and
full synthetic oil. Mineral oil is distilled and refined from crude oil. It has a low production cost but is less fluid
and it is less than satisfactory in respect to low temperature fluidity (flow ability), oxidation stability and viscosity
temperature characteristics. High VI mineral oil was created to supplement this.
In full synthetic oil the main composite, hydrocarbon, is chemically synthesized. It has a high viscosity index, ex-
cels in oxidation stability, produces little sludge and its additives demonstrate a great. It is indeed the best base
oil but is expensive.
Semi-synthetic oil further improved the viscosity and low temperature characteristics of high VI mineral oil with a
performance almost equal to that of full synthetic oil.

Additives in engine oil account for nearly 40% of total volume and greatly affect its characteristics and perfor- Lubri-
mance. Therefore, each manufacturer has its own know-how for the actual composition of additives and for their cants

3. Performance
Oil viscosity
Oil viscosity greatly affects the engine’s ability to start, its lubrication and both its oil and fuel consumption. The
higher its viscosity the less fluid the oil. Engine oil must be carefully selected according to ambient temperatures.
The SAE Viscosity Number is extensively used worldwide as a criteria for selecting optimum engine oil.

SAE viscosity classification

This classification was developed by the Society of Automo-
tive Engineers (SAE) in the United States. According to this SAE-RULED VISCOSITY CLASSIFICATION
system, oil viscosity is classified into 11 stages from OW Viscosity at low temperature
0W 5W 10W 15W 20W 25W
to 60, and each stage is assigned a number, as seen in the

table on the right. The higher the SAE number, the higher the

viscosity of the engine oil. The letter “W” stands for “winter”
and indicates engine oils of low viscosity suitable for colder
temperatures.

Multi grade oil

ln recent years, “multi grade” oil such as 15W-40 and 10W-30, has become mainstream. It can be used in a
wide range of ambient temperatures. For instance, at low temperatures, SAE15W-40 offers a viscosity equivalent
to that of SAE15W, and it is as good as SAE40 at high temperature (100°C). Multi grade oil can also boost fuel
economy and is highly valued.

Proper viscosity
Oil viscosity must be carefully determined based on the ambient temperature at engine start up. See below, a
table proposed in Komatsu’s operation and maintenance manuals

Detergency and dispersion properties are determined by additives and are critical to the performance of engine
oil.

Heat resistance and oxidation stability

A diesel engine for construction equipment is subjected to high load during operation, and engine parts exposed
to high temperatures. A good engine oil must not deteriorate too fast due to heat. When oil is gradually oxidized
because of high temperatures, all functions of the oil are reduced. Oxidation stability is one of the most critical
factors for engine oil. It can directly affect oil replacement intervals.

Lubrication
Some engine parts slide or rotate, and oil provides a film between them to facilitate their movement and prevent
a direct contact which could otherwise cause wear or seizure.
When engine oil viscosity lowers or lubrication is badly impaired because water, sand or dirt gets into the oil or
fuel, serious engine trouble such as the seizure of a bearing could result.

Base value (total base number)

Engine oil contains an alkaline additive that works as a detergent and dispersion agent. The entire alkalinity in Lubri-
engine oil is termed base value. The higher the base value of an engine oil, and the better it can neutralize acids. cants

Note: It cannot be said that the quality of specific engine oil is excellent simply because its base value is high.

Sulfated ash
“Ash” is left over after a metallic additive in engine oil is burnt. The amount of ash in oil is expressed with an
index named “sulfated ash”. In recent years, metallic additives prolong the life of engine oil and help it withstand
heavy-duty use. Metallic additives are particularly effective for detergency and dispersion and for oxidation
stability. On the other hand, they can also have a negative impact on the performance and durability of the Diesel
Particulate Filter (DPF). Thus, low ash engine oil is required for DPF-equipped engines. However, low ash engine
oil deteriorates quicker, which in turn leads to a TBN value lower than the allowable limit and makes it difficult to
maintain the standard oil replacement interval. This contradiction led to the development of a special kind of oil
that raised a TBN value while maintaining a low ash content. Komatsu successfully developed Tier 4 regulations–
conforming engine oil that is named “EO15W40-LA” & “EO10W30-LA”, and which is sold as genuine Komatsu
oil.

Oil consumption
Two major properties can critically affect engine oil consumption: dynamic viscosity and the amount of evapo-
ration. With a higher viscosity oil, the oil film on the surface of a piston ring is well maintained, keeping oil from
going up, which results in a lower oil consumption. In general, multigrade oil offers a lower oil consumption
because its viscosity varies in a narrower range of temperature.

4. Quality standard for engine oil

Quality standards for engine oil are set by automotive industry groups in different regions of the world: ACEA in
Europe, API in North America, and JASO (Japan Lubricating Oil Society). Those standards apply to engine oil for
on-road vehicles (busses and trucks). Engines in off-road machines (construction equipment) require high grade oil
that can withstand much higher and rigorous load.

API standard
This engine oil standard was set by API (American Petroleum Institute) in the US. It begins with “S”, goes up to
“SA” and ends with “SM” which stands for the highest grade oil at present. The standard for diesel engine oil
begins with “C”. For Tier 3 engines (equipped with EGR), CI-4 and CH-4 are normally used. Depending on the
amount of sulfur content in fuel, applicable oil is restricted and an oil replacement interval is shortened. For Tier 4
engines (equipped with EGR and EDP), low ash CJ-4 oil is available.

API CLASSIFICATION APPLICATION

Introduced in 2016; cope with regulations of exhaust gas emissions from engines with EGR and all kinds (single
CK-4 or combined) of exhaust aftertreatment devices, such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs), Diesel Oxidation
Catalysts (SCR), to protect those devices from fouling, clogging and de-activation.
CJ-4 Introduced in 2007; cope with regulations of emission gas from engines equipped with DPF
CI-4 Introduced in 2002; cope with regulations of emission gas from engines equipped with EGR
CH-4 Introduced in 1998; cope with emission gas regulations (applicable to case of Fuel S being below 0,5%)
*CG-4 Introduced in 1995; cope with emission gas regulations (applicable to case of Fuel S being below 0,5%)
*CF-4 Introduced in 1990; cope with emission gas regulations (for a high top ring type engine)
*CF Introduced in 1994; can be used as an alternative for heavy-duty CD oil
*CD Introduced in 1955; used for a high speed and high load engine with a turbocharger (now disused)
* CG-4, CF-4, CF, CD classification have been abolished by API

JASO standard
In Japan, JASO (Japan Automotive Standards Organization) established diesel engine oil standard in 2001, and
it set rules for the quality of diesel engine oil for automobiles in this country. JASO DH-1 is designated for Tier 3
engines and JASO DH-2 is also designated for Tier 4 regulations (equipped with EGR and DPF) as heavy-duty
diesel engine oil.

JASO CLASSIFICATION APPLICATION

Introduced in 2001, aiming at the following performance:
Prevent wear on moving valve
DH-1 Keep pistons clean from soot in oil that increases due to the adoption of EGR and delaying of injection timing
both to cope with emission gas regulations
Ensure oxidation stability at high engine temperature
Introduced in 2005, aiming at the following performance:
In addition to keeping an engine clean and preventing wear functions required of DH-1, reduce the leftovers
DH-2
of combustion (ashes) that could be a cause for DPF to get clogged or elements that threaten to impair
catalytic performance

Komatsu Genuine diesel engine oil

Komatsu diesel engine oil
Designed for the latest generation of diesel engines (EU Stage III
and EU Stage IV) and to meet all KES parameters (e.g. Hot Tube
Test). The new Komatsu Low Ash (LA) engine oil is strictly recom-
mended for this generation of engines with a Diesel Particulate
Filter (DPF). It includes special additives that ensure excellent
cleanliness for all engine components.
