CHEMICAL COMPOSITION FOR

MEEHANITE TYPES CHS, SFP 500, CB3 AND SP 700

Ref MAFODER 2020.3
1.0 INTRODUCTION

The grades requested are similar to the following MEEHANITE Types, i.e. FGS400-12 (CHS),
FGS500-7 (SFP 500), FT25 with 0,7 % chromium (CB3).

The advantages to be gained by use of MEEHANITE specifications are that they are produced
under the controls required in the implementation of the MEEHANITE process to ensure
consistency. This applies to all your cast iron grades produced and should be stressed in any
of your sales. Conformance is not confined only to metal chemistry.

2.0 MEEHANITE REQUIREMENTS

Below are the manufacturing instructions for the above MEEHANITE types.

2.1 MEEHANITE CHS (FGS 400-12)

T.C. % 2.80 to 3.20

Si % 4.00 to 5.00
Mn % 0.30
P% < 0.07
S% < 0.01
Mg % 0.03 to 0.05

Constitutional wedge <5

Process wedge 3 to 6
Micro structure Fully ferritic matrix with 90 %+ nodularity
Mechanical properties 400+ MPa / 2 % min. elongation
Hardness BHN 200 to 280

2.2 MEEHANITE SFP 500 (FGS 500-7)

T.C. % 3.5 to 3.6

Si % 2.3 to 2.5
Mn % < 0.30

Cu % 0.30 to 0.40
Mg % 0.03 to 0.05

Constitutional wedge <5

Process wedge 3 to 6
Micro structure Mixed matrix of ferrite and pearlite with ferrite predominating and
90 %+ nodularity
Mechanical properties 500 MPa min. / 8 % min. elongation

2.3 MEEHANITE CB3 (FT25 + 0.7 % Cr)

T.C. % 3.10 to 3.20

Si % 2.70 to 3.00
Mn % 0.70
P% < 0.10
S% < 0.08
Cu % 0.50
Cr % 0.25 max.

Constitutional wedge 0 to 3
Process wedge 0 to 2
Microstructure Fully pearlitic matrix with type A flake graphite
Mechanical properties Tensile 300 MPa min.
Hardness BHN 200 to 250

2.4 MEEHANITE SP 700

If higher strength material is required, we recommend this fully pearlitic type of MEEHANITE of the
following composition and mechanical properties:

T.C. % 3.5 to 3.6

Si % 2.30 to 2.50
Mn % 0.3
P% < 0.08
S% < 0.01
Cu % 1.00
Mg % 0.03 to 0.05
Constitutional wedge <5
Process wedge 3 to 6
Microstructure Fully pearlitic matrix with 90+% nodularity
Mechanical properties Tensile 700 MPa min. / Elongation 3 % min
Hardness BHN 220 to 280

3.0 SUMMARY

It has been found that the nodular graphitic irons are superior not only in mechanical strength,
but the progress of corrosion is reduced compared to the flake graphitic irons.

It is important to stress in any submissions (not just in this case) the superior consistency of
irons produced by the MEEHANITE process in that control is not by metal chemistry alone.

All these irons give excellent service handling sulphuric acid in concentrations exceeding 77 %
and up to 95 °C, while increasingly higher concentrations can withstand up to 200 °C.

All wedge testing is to be carried out as shown in Installation Report Ref: MAFODER 2019.4
section 5.0, a copy of which has been supplied to Mafoder Fonderie and as demonstrated
during the installation visit in October 2019.

All compositions stated here are typically for 25 mm casting section thickness.
