Lesson
Assess Quality of
1 Received Materials

What’s New?

What is application of quality standards?

Quality standards offer a formula for success. A clearly defined set of standards and
requirements makes it easier for companies to meet what their consumers consider
"quality," and they improve the overall vision of what the company should work toward.

Documents that give criteria, specifications, guidelines, or characteristics that can be

applied consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes, and services are
appropriate for their intended use

The intent of standards is to provide at least minimum quality, safety, or performance

specifications so as to ensure relatively uniform products and performance and to
remove ambiguity as to the suitability of certain commercial products for particular
applications.

Characteristics of Materials used in a Specific Project

• Selection of Material

Material selection is one of the most common tasks for design engineering. The
ability to assess the material’s impact on the performance of a product is
crucial for reliable performance. Sometimes, buyers are also considering the
label or name of the company which is producing the great quality materials
and are known in the market. Examples are the name HP for printers and Intel
for some computer hardware.

• Testing of Material
The testing of material properties is widely understood to be the key to
obtaining data for a project, performing failure analysis, or understanding

3
material interactions. Material testing also provides information on the quality
of incoming and outgoing products. Inspection test equipment and techniques
are demonstrated for a wide range of materials and assemblies during the
class. This provides the participants with both knowledge of the common
failure modes.

• Cost of Material
The cost of materials is also considered when buying or selecting materials for
a specific project. The amount may vary but never take for granted the quality
and reliability of the material. Will you buy the material which is less expensive
but worst quality? Will you buy the mater that which you cannot afford? People
look for places that can meet their standards and the right cost for materials
to buy.

Characteristics of common materials for increased security are also a great factor in the
design and planning process. Evaluation of longevity criteria and assessment of site
environmental factors are vital to project planning.

Specific knowledge about the project and general common sense must dictate material
selection. Although many materials can offer enhanced protection, often the most cost-
efficient and readily available material that provides a reasonable life expectancy for the
project must be considered.

What is It?

TECHNICAL TERMS

● checklist - helps organize data by category

- is a management tool that lists different tasks,
activities, and behaviors that need to be followed to
achieve a systematic result
● durability - the quality of being able to last a long time without
becoming damaged or the durability of the materials
used.
● hardware - refers to the external and internal devices and
equipment that enable you to perform major
functions such as input, output, storage,
communication, processing, and more.
● tools - a tool held in the hand and operated without
electricity or power
● equipment - set of articles used or needed for a specific
purpose or activity and is operated by electricity
(AC) or battery (DC) or needed for a specific
purpose or activity.

4
TECHNICAL TERMS
● inspection - it is performing a careful physical examination of
a certain tool or equipment
● OHS - occupational health and safety, is a multidisciplinary
practice dealing with all aspects of health and safety
in the workplace, with a strong focus on preventing
workplace hazards
● PPE - personal protective equipment (PPE) is specialized
clothing or equipment worn by an employee for
protection against infectious materials
● standards - The required or minimum level of quality based on
norms or general use
- a set of criteria within an industry relating to the
standard functioning and carrying out of operations
in their respective fields of production
● reliability - defined as the probability that a product, system, or
service will perform its intended function adequately
for a specified period of time
● SOP - is a procedure specific to your operation that
describes the activities necessary to complete tasks in
accordance with industry regulations, provincial
laws, or even just your own standards for running
your business

Standards ensure the safety, quality, and reliability of products and services; they
facilitate trade and protect our health and the health of the environment. For industries,
standards improve systems and processes; they reduce waste, cut costs, and ensure
consistency.

The characteristic of the materials to be used for the specific project must be:

• of good quality
- This is the most important factor when choosing materials to buy or
acquire. Products with good quality are long-lasting and safe to use
because they follow certain standards before being commercialized.
• reliable
- It means that you can be sure that it will perform its function well,
operate safely, and give its maximum performance.
• suitable for the purpose
- Choose the materials that are necessary to make the project possible.
Making a list of products or materials to buy is a good trait of a wise
consumer.
• low cost
- It doesn’t mean that you will choose the less expensive one and exclude
quality. Low costs imply that you can afford to purchase the materials
without breaking your pocket while also ensuring higher quality.

5
The Factors in Selecting the Materials:

1. Selection of material – it is the ability to choose the materials using the following
considerations:
• Cost of the material – is the amount of purchasing the materials, it may differ
from one supplier to another even if the specifications are the same.
• Environmental consideration – anything that leads to the pollution of soil,
water and air, especially its energy consumption impact. At the end of ICT
hardware use, recycling, and disposal like e-waste would be used in landfills
and would provide impact and effect on the environment.
• Chemical properties –a material property evident during the time of its use will
show a chemical reaction.
• Physical properties – the identifiable and unique aspect of material most
particularly its basic capabilities.
• Mechanical attributes – the physical properties that any material exhibits
when applied with forces, such as elasticity, tensile strength, elongation,
hardness, and fatigue limit.
• Company producing the material – the business name provides identity to the
business and the product it produces, especially when the enterprise produces
unique and amazing products.

2. Testing of material – this will help analyze the quality and standards of materials
using the following techniques:
• Hardness tester – any device that checks the hardness of a material by
measuring the durability of such material.
• Comprehensive strength test – it is more of a mechanical test that measures
the maximum amount of compressive load a material can bear before such
material breaks.
• Impact test – is used to observe the mechanics of how the material exhibit
when it experiences shock and such material immediately deforms.
• Fluoroscope –an imaging machine that uses X-rays to determine the interior
characteristics of an object.
• Testing machine – a universal tester for materials for testing tensile strength
and compressive strength of materials.
• Creep test –subjecting the material to high-temperature progressive
deformation at constant stress test or ability to alter its form after such test
has been taken.

6
ICT Materials, Components, Assemblies and Its Specifications

In relation to the factors in selecting the materials, as a learner, you need to be familiar
with the ICT materials, components, and assemblies’ specifications. You must be careful
not only with the names of these items but also with how you describe the details of
such an item according to industry standards.

The following are examples of ICT tools, materials, or equipment with their given
specifications.

Identifying Faulty Materials, Recording and Reporting

These are the things to be considered when:

A. Receiving Materials
- Match the packing slip to the items received and ensure that the materials
are designated for that specific department.
- That you are receiving the materials indicated on the purchase order with
regard to quantity and specifications.
- That materials are in good condition.
- That terms regarding the installation of the equipment are met.

B. Receiving Reports (whenever goods are received)

- The person receiving the goods must document, using the administrative
software, that all goods were received for each requisition before any payment
can be made to vendor.
- Any exception must be noted so that partial payments can be processed or
defective goods can be returned.

C. Return of Merchandise
- When merchandise is received which is incomplete or defective, the supervisor
will return the materials to the supplier or to the store where it was bought
and make arrangements with the vendor for replacement.

D. Make an Inventory Report of the Materials

All materials received must be listed and reported to monitor how many
materials are on hand. Effective management checks are an important means
of providing assurance of the integrity and security of the benefit processes.
They are also useful in identifying training needs, indicating possible
weaknesses in procedure, and ensuring the section meets its accuracy target
set for Best Value Performance Indicators purposes.

The quality checker will record the date of the receipts, the name of the
materials, tools, or equipment purchased, the quantity, the official receipt
number, and the signature of the person who purchased the items. They will
also identify if the materials received are in good physical condition or are
defective for proper recording and reporting.
