CLEANING MATERIALS

Learning Objectives:

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

1. Familiarize the different and common materials, tools, and equipment
used in cleaning minor vehicle.

Introduction:
This section shows the list of different and common materials and
equipment used in cleaning minor vehicle. Each item is provided with its
function in order to know its basic usage.

● Air Compressor –supplies the air flow for all equipment in a system.
Air compressors work in two phases: the compression operation and
the release operation. There are two types of compressors, positive
displacement and dynamic (also called centrifugal). The rate at which
a compressor can deliver a volume of air is noted in cubic feet per
minute (cfm). Because atmospheric pressure plays a role in how fast
air moves into the cylinder, cfm will vary with atmospheric pressure,
temperature and humidity of the air. Scfm ratings are given at a
specific pressure—3.0 scfm at 90 psi, for example. If pressure is
reduced, scfm goes up, and vice versa. Positive displacement
compressors take in air and mechanically reduce the space occupied
by the air to increase pressure. Dynamic compressors use the
mechanical action of rotating impellers to transfer pressure to the air.
Refer to Figure 1(a).

● Vacuum Pump / Cleaner – are used to create vacuums. These
powerful devices pull the gas and air molecules from sealed containers
to create a vacuum (technically a ‘partial vacuum’ as it will be
imperfect in comparison to a theoretical ideal – or ‘perfect’ vacuum).
Such vacuums may be required for an engineering or manufacturing
process or they may be used to move liquids from one location to
another, just like conventional pumps. Refer to Figure 1(b).

Car Cleaning Materials: (a) Steam Cleaner, (b) Polisher, (c) Hose, (d) Car Shampoo

● Steam Cleaner – Regardless of how you use your vehicle, the interior
can get dirty and soiled over time. Your car can get dirty in any ways.
A steam cleaner is a great solution for soiled car interiors, whether
heavily or lightly soiled. Steam is an excellent option to clean your car
for the following reasons: eliminates the need to use harmful
chemicals, penetrates deep into fabric and upholstery not just on the
surface, can be useful to cleans the upholstery in hard-to-reach
places, can be used to clean all kinds of surfaces safely, softens and
lifts dirt so you don’t have to scrub a stain for hours, and cleaning can
be done at home to quickly clean dirt before it leaves a permanent
stain. Refer to Figure 2(a).

● Polisher – a car polish is a product that helps to eliminate surface

scratches, swirls, oxidation, dirt, and other minor imperfections.
Polish should be used before wax, as it helps to restore auto paint

that has lost its shine due to oxidation. Car polish does this by
removing a very fine layer of paintwork so the appearance of scratches
is minimized as they settle into the coat. Refer to Figure 2(b).

● Hose – a long, flexible pipe made of rubber or plastic. Water is

directed through a hose is order to do things such as put out fires,
clean cars, or water gardens. Refer to Figure 2(c).

● Car Shampoo / Soap – Automotive shampoo is primarily composed of

surfactants. Surfactants (Surface Active Agent) are chains of carefully
designed two-part molecules, one end of which loves water, and the
other end dirt. When you apply shampoo to a surface the surfactants
seek out all the dirt and try to surround it. Once surrounded, they
hold it in suspension in the water, thereby allowing it to be easily
rinsed away. Surfactants try to get under the dirt, lifting it from
surfaces, though there are other ways to further increase the power of
the shampoo and help it to remove soiling from a surface, more on
that later. Refer to Figure 2(d).

● Wash mitt – works in a way that it collects the particles of grime and
dirt by trapping them into the mitt fibers. That way, it ensures that
there is no scratching or harming your paintwork. It traps the debris
and dirt in its deep pile before it can do any damage to the paint job. If
no wash mitt available, you may use absorbent cloth or rags. Refer to
Figure 3(a).

● Pail – typically a watertight, vertical cylinder or truncated cone or

square, with an open top and a flat bottom, attached to a semicircular
carrying handle called the bail. It is usually an open-top container.
Refer to Figure 3(b)

● Car Wax / Polish – Car wax is a product that protects and enhances
a car's paint coating. Wax is best used after cleaning and polishing to
make your car’s paintwork shine. It does this by smoothing out the
painted surface by filling swirls and scratches with a protective
coating. So instead of removing a fine layer of paint like polish does,
car wax smoothens out over on top the paint. So simply speaking,
polish removes and wax smoothens! Refer to Figure 3(c).

● Air fresheners – a device used to disperse chemicals intended to

mask or eliminate unpleasant odors. Refer to Figure 3 (d-1) and (d-2).

Car Cleaning Materials: (a) Mop and Basket, (b) Broom, (c) Pressure Washer

● Mop – an implement made of absorbent material fastened to a handle

and used especially for cleaning floors. Refer to Figure 4(a).

● Broom – a bundle of firm stiff twigs or fibers bound together on a long

handle especially for sweeping. Refer to Figure 4(b).

● Pressure washer – a high-pressure mechanical sprayer used to

remove loose paint, mold, grime, dust, mud, and dirt from surfaces
and objects such as buildings, vehicles and concrete surfaces. The
volume of a pressure washer is expressed in gallons or liters per
minute, often designed into the pump and not variable. The pressure,
expressed in pounds per square inch, pascals, or bar (deprecated but
in common usage), is designed into the pump but can be varied by
adjusting the unloading valve. The basic pressure washer consists of a
motor (either electric, internal combustion, pneumatic or hydraulic)
that drives a high-pressure water pump, a high-pressure hose and
a trigger gun-style switch. Just as a garden hose nozzle is used to
increase the velocity of water, a pressure washer nozzle creates high
pressure and velocity. Refer to Figure 4(c).

Relevant OHS and Proper Disposal of Wastes

Learning Objectives:

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

1. Know the relevant OHS in cleaning the perform proper disposal of
wastes upon cleaning the minor vehicle unit.

INTRODUCTION TO OSH

The implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)

standards and protocols plays a vital role in the industry in the Philippines
for it provides some sort of assurance to the Filipino workers and laborers re
their health, safety and welfare in their respective workplaces. According to
an article published by the World Health Organization (WHO), Philippine
Statistics Authority (PSA) said that the total cases of occupational diseases
reached over 125,000 in the year 2015. Back pain is the most common type
of occupational disease compromising 32.8% of the reported cases while
administrative and support activities were mostly affected with 34.3% which
is then followed by manufacturing industry with 31.1%.

The Philippines passed the Republic Act 11058 or an act

strengthening compliance with Occupational Safety and Health standards
and providing penalties for violations thereof. According to its declaration of
policy this law ensures a safe and healthful workplace for all working people
by affording them full protection against all hazards in their work
environment.

Occupational Safety and Health

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) or also known as OHS relates

to health, safety, and welfare issues in the workplace. OSH includes the
laws, standards, and programs that are aimed at making the workplace
better for workers, along with co-workers, family members, customers, and
other stakeholders. Improving a company’s occupational health and safety
standards ensures good business, a better brand image, and higher
employee morale.

It is concerned with addressing many types of workplace hazards such

as:
● Chemicals

● Physicals hazards

● Biological agents

● Psychological fallout

● Ergonomic issues

● Accidents

Occupational health and safety standards are in place to mandate the

removal, reduction, or replacement of job site hazards. OHS programs
should also include material that helps minimize the effects of the hazards.
Employers and company management are obliged to provide a safe working
environment for all employees.

Part of the Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace of vehicle

maintenance and servicing is the wearing of the Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE). The PPE will serve as the ‘uniform’ type of the workers
upon doing their jobs to keep them safe from any harm and hazards around
them. Important PPE in vehicle maintenance and servicing includes gloves,
gas mask, and eye goggles.

● Gloves – pieces of clothing which cover your hands and wrists and
have individual sections for each finger. You wear gloves to keep your
hands warm or dry or to protect them.

● Gas Mask – a masklike device containing or attached to a component

that filters the air inhaled by the wearer through charcoal and
chemicals, for protecting the face and lungs against noxious gases
and fumes, as in warfare or in certain industrial processes.

● Eye Goggles – Safety goggles are a type of personal protective

equipment (PPE) that is worn on the eye for its protection. Essentially,
goggles are safety glasses that fit tightly to the eye, often with suction,
and are secured with a strap that goes around the back of the head.
Goggles may be used to protect the eye against particles, chemicals,
water, glare, and from things striking the eyes.

AIM... Aim low, pointing the extinguisher nozzle (or its horn or hose)
at the base of the fire.

NOTE: Do not touch the plastic discharge horn on CO2

extinguishers, it gets very cold and may damage skin.

SQUEEZE... Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.

SWEEP... Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it
appears to be out. Watch the area. If the fire re-ignites, repeat steps 2
- 4.

If you have the slightest doubt about your ability to fight a fire....EVACUATE
IMMEDIATELY!

INTRODUCTION TO SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT ACT

No matter where, people are at risk with the threats caused by

mismanagement of the wastes produced targeting the public health and the
environment. The Philippine has set its foot in addressing this problem and
formulated the Republic Act 9003 or the “Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000.” It’s prime purpose is to utilize environmentally-
sound methods that maximizes the utilization of valuable resources,
encourage resource conservation and recovery, ensure proper segregation,
collection, transport, storage, treatment, and disposal of solid wastes, and
many more as per stated in the republic act’s declaration of policies.

Waste Management

● Users should make an effort to keep waste to a minimum. The best

way to do so is by reducing the scale of operation, which minimizes
the quantity of waste generated. Whenever possible, chemicals used
should be substituted with less hazardous chemicals.
● Chemical quantities should be kept to a minimum. Store only what
will be used in the near term.
● Besides preventing or minimizing waste generation, chemicals should
be recycled or recovered for reuse.
● When waste is generated, it must be disposed of properly. Sink
disposal may not always be appropriate and may end contaminating
drinking water. Alternative methods of disposal should be considered
including incineration, treatment, and land disposal. The institute's
EHS office should be consulted to determine the proper disposal
method for different waste types.

Waste Collection and Storage

● When generating or managing any chemical waste, appropriate

personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn, and engineering
controls should be implemented as necessary.
● Collect and store chemical waste at or near the point of generation in
a designated satellite accumulation area. This accumulation area
should be well marked for easy identification.
● Chemical waste must be stored in compatible containers with closed
and properly fitted caps.

● Waste containers must be labeled mentioning chemical compositions,
the accumulation start date, and hazard warnings as appropriate. The
institute's EHS office typically provides these required labels.
● Incompatible waste types should not be mixed and should be kept
separate in order to avoid any reaction, heat generation, and/or gas
evolution.
● Waste containers should be stored in secondary containers in a
ventilated, cool, and dry area.
● In the central accumulation area, waste containers should be
grounded to avoid fire and explosion hazards.
● Trained laboratory researchers who are most familiar with the waste
generated should work with EHS to ensure proper waste management.

Chemical Waste Disposal

Users are responsible for the proper disposal of the waste generated
during their work. Improper waste disposal may severely endanger public
health and/or the environment. The handling of hazardous waste must be
regulated from the moment of generation until its disposal at its offsite final
destination facility. A waste management system must be devised before
work begins on any laboratory activity. Users must comply with the rules
and regulations of their institute's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)
office, which develops and implements proper waste management systems
satisfying diverse regulations and standards, such as those imposed by the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Heads of academic/administrative units and supervisory staff have a

particular responsibility for ensuring that all persons who generate chemical
waste dispose of it appropriately. This includes the development of waste
disposal procedures, communicating local requirements to staff and
students and ensuring that appropriate training is provided. The local safety
officer can also provide specific advice on for disposing of chemical waste.

Information Sheet 1.1-3
Care and Use of Cleaning Tools and Equipment

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Know simple ways to care and use cleaning tools and equipment
2. Clean a minor vehicle unit.

INTRODUCTION

To clean your car, you can either opt for a simple body and wheel
clean, or you can choose to clean both the interior and exterior of your car.
Before you begin cleaning the exterior, make sure the body of your car is
cool and in the shade. Use specially formulated cleaners to clean the body
and wheels of your car. To clean the interior, remove the floor mats and
throw away trash. Vacuum the interior and use a foam cleanser to clean the
carpet and upholstery. Finish cleaning your car by using a window cleaner
to clean the inside and outside of your windows.

AIR COMPRESSOR

(1) Read and Follow Your Air Compressor’s Manual

There’s going to be some simple tips in there for you that will help you
to get a nice long life out of your air compressor – simple stuff for you to do
that you would never have thought to do unless you read it.

(2) Drain the Moisture from the Tanks

The receiver tank collects moisture from the air that it’s compressing –
especially if you live in a humid climate. Most tanks have a valve for
draining this moisture that accumulates and it’s up to you to make sure
that these are drained regularly.

(3) Clean Intake Vents

If you force your air compressor to work too hard to intake air you’re
losing power on your compression. This will gradually degrade the quality of
your tool. Be sure to keep your intake vent as clean as possible and check
them regularly especially if you’re working in a dusty or dirty environment.

(4) Tighten All Fasteners

Your air compressor’s a running, vibrating engine and it will loosen its
screws, nuts and bolts on a regular basis. Be sure to check these
periodically and tighten them up if you find any that have jiggled loose.

Alexander ryan, Ga Revision # 00
(5) Check Hoses Regularly
If they become cracked or corroded they could soon begin to leak and
then put undue strain on the rest of your compressor’s components.

(6) Test the Safety Shutdown System

Your air compressor may have a built in safety shut down. The
function of this system is to shut off your compressor if it’s getting too hot,
or if the engine’s oil pressure is too low.

(7) Check and Change Air Filters As Needed

A filthy air filter is only hurting your air compressor by allowing dirt
from the outside in, plus forcing it to work harder to intake air. Check your
filters regularly and change them if you notice a heavy build-up of dust and
dirt. Change every six months or so if you use it infrequently.

(8) Clean the Fuel Tank

As with any engine you need to periodically clean out the fuel tank to
ensure optimal operating conditions. You should look to clean out the
engine on your air compressor once every year or so to remove any residual
build up from the fuel. This will preserve the life of your engine.

(9) Check and Change the Compressor Oil

Every 500-1000 hours of use you should be changing this oil to
ensure maximum functioning of your air compressor.

(10) Change the Separator Element

The separator element prevents the excessive use of oil, but it has to
be replaced periodically. Keep your compressor in top condition by replacing
the separator element every 1,000 hours of operation.

(11) Clean the Heat Exchangers

If your heat exchangers are dirty then they can’t do their job, which is
to reduce the operating temperatures of your air compressor.

STEAM CLEANER

(1) Most units are equipped with a three-prong electrical plug. Be sure to
use a grounded three-prong electrical outlet to plug in the unit.

(2) Some units with automatically begin to heat and others require you to
flip an on the switch. Most units have a red indicator light that tells you
the machine is heating. Look for the light when your unit is plugged in.
If there is no indicator, turn the unit on by using the on the switch.

(3) After the unit is done heating, usually 3-5 minutes depending on which
machine you have, the indicator light will turn off. This indicated the
water is hot and you are ready to begin steam cleaning.

(4) Point the steam nozzle or accessory towards the item that you want to
clean, and press the steam button or trigger. Most units require you to
hold down the button or trigger for a continuous flow of steam. Always
be sure you point the steam nozzle away from yourself, others, pets, or
anything that can be harmed by the steam. Remember, steam is very hot
and can cause injury if not used correctly.

(5) Use a slight back and forth motion over the area you are cleaning. You
can also scrub the area if your unit has a utility brush connected.
Steaming a non-porous surface (such as a shower wall) and then wiping
the loosened dirt and grime with a rag is a great way to remove debris.
Even though using a rag or clean cloth is generally recommended while
the area is still wet, be careful to use caution because the surface area
may still be hot.

(6) The type of unit you have will designate how long you can use your
handheld steam cleaner before you run out of water to create steam.
Once you are done cleaning, immediately unplug the unit and place it on
a flat, level surface to cool.

(7) Generally, it takes between 30-45 minutes for a unit to cool. After the
machine has cooled down, press the steam button to release any built-
up pressure in the hose.

(8) Remove any attached accessories from the unit.

(9) Unscrew the boiler cap and drain the water basin into a tub or sink.
Emptying the water will help avoid mineral build-up and prolong the life
of your machine.

(10) Loosely replace the boiler cap. Do not fasten it down tightly, as this can
make it difficult to remove when you use your machine the next time.

(11) Store your machine in a cool, dry location.

VACUUM CLEANER

If you are not sure about the way you are using your cleaning device, please
cross the following steps:

(1) Examine the vacuum bag area - The bag area is where all the dust gets
deposited. Change the bag if it is full, or empty the area if your vacuum
cleaner is a reusable canister. Do these often, other ways, the vacuum
will malfunction.

(2) Wash the vacuum brush - it’s time for taking the vacuum brush off and
cleans it. The proper way to do it is by holding it over a bucket with
warm water. Of course, you can use dish soap or a mild detergent for
washing the brush.

(3) Check the Vacuum’s Height - most of the vacuums have adjustable
height settings, this way, you can adapt the cleaning to the varying
thickness of the carpets you are going to clean.

(4) Dry the Bristle brush - after you have done the washing, use some rugs
to dry the inside of all attachments.

(5) Comb the Bristles - while you are drying the bristle brush, use an old
comb through the bristles and pull out all the hair and other debris.
Then remove the remaining dirt.

(6) Move all the smaller items out of the cleaning area - while furniture
is not easy to move at all, well, there are other things you can move from
the area you are going to clean. Clutter can slow down the cleaning
process.

(7) Turn the vacuum on - once you make sure everything is all clean, it’s
time for turning the device on. You can use the slow even strokes while
you are pushing the machine to and fro on the carpet or the floor.

(8) Use the vacuum’s attachments - do you remember the day you first
opened the box of the new vacuum cleaner? If yes, maybe you are
visualizing all those attachments that came with the machine.

Make sure you are making full use of these accessories. If not, the
airflow will push the dirt from the untouched corners into the areas you are
done the cleaning. Wash the brushes and do the process over again

Cleaning your vacuum regularly will prevent dirt clogging and help
your Vacuum perform better and last longer. Some of the ways to do these
are:

(1) Wash the Vacuum Brush:

Vacuum brush rolls, also referred to as beater brushes, dirt off floor
surfaces and carpets. The brush roll is located under the Vacuum machine.
Constantly check brush roll for dirt strands and debris clogging. If the brush

is clogged, the Vacuum will not work perfectly. Endeavor to clean carefully
by:

● Disengage the plate by holding the brush in place.

● Take note of the brush roll and the direction of the roll belt for easy
identification and belt disengagement.
● Wash the brush bristle with warm water and detergent to weaken
hardened accumulated dirt. Scrub bristle with your fingers severally
to removed hair and carpet strands and other forms of debris.

Dry the Bristle brush:

After washing the bristle brush:

● Drain brush of water and carefully examine for dirt and strand you
may have missed during washing. (If the brush appears weak or some
bristles missing you will need to change it)
● Expose brush to warm temperature (sunning) if possible for drying. If
brush remains moist before usage, it will accumulate strands and
debris faster than it should, this will negatively impact cleaning.
● Comb the Bristles: When fully dried, use a comb to run the bristles
through and through pulling out whatever hairs and carpet strands
are left after washing to leave it perfectly clean and strand free.

Repeat the cleaning process: How often you clean your Vacuum depends
on how often it is used.

POLISHER (BUFFER)

(1) The first thing you need to do is clean your car before using the car
buffer. Any dirt or debris left on the paintwork may scratch the paint
further.

(2) Apply a single blob of polish to the polishing head and then spread the
polish onto the paintwork which needs to be polished.

(3) Place the pad on the paintwork and ensure it’s on a slow setting.

(4) Use the buffer to spread the polish around the area.

(5) Now turn the buffer to the desired speed – this will depend on which
make of polish you are using, so be sure to follow the instructions on the

container. Apply even pressure to the paintwork, pressing down on the
buffer quite lightly, and not too much so that it could damage the paint
and the buffer.

(6) Move the buffer slowly over the section to form a haze effect. You may
need to go over sections more than once.

(7) Remove the buffer from the paintwork and then turn it off.

(8) Using a polishing microfiber cloth, remove any residue that may be left

PRESSURE WASHER

(1) Check the oil and fuel levels on gasoline-powered models; do not overfill.

(2) Check the water inlet screen, located where you connect the garden hose.
Clean dirty screens with water, or replace it if damaged.

(3) If your pressure washer is equipped with an inline screen in the wand
extension, make sure it's not clogged. Clean it with water, or replace if
damaged.

(4) Inspect the spray gun, wand extension and spray tip. Make sure the
connections are secure, including the connection to the high-pressure
hose.
Test the spray gun trigger and trigger lock. If they don't function correctly,
replace the spray gun.

(5) Examine the high-pressure hose for cuts, leaks, bulges or other damage,
check the hose couplings. If the hose is damaged, read the
manufacturer's replacement instructions.

(6) Check the detergent siphoning tube and clean it out if it's clogged. If the
detergent system has a filter, check it as well.

(7) Flush out the garden hose you'll be connecting to the pressure washer.

After you finish your cleaning project, it's time to properly store your
pressure washer:

(1) Rinse detergent from the pressure washer. Remove the detergent
siphoning tube from the detergent supply and set the spray to low
pressure. Run water through the system for one or two minutes.

(2) Relieve pressure in the machine. Turn off the pressure washer and the
water supply. If you have an electric pressure washer, unplug it from
the electrical outlet. Point the spray gun away from any people or
animals and run it until the water stops flowing.

(3) Engage the trigger lock and let the pressure washer cool down.

(4) Disconnect the garden hose, spray gun, wand extension and high-
pressure hose. Drain water from them.

(5) Remove any remaining water from the pump. If you have gasoline-
powered model, pull the recoil handle about six times. If you have an
electric model, turn the unit on until the water exits the pump and then
turn it off immediately.

(6) Clean off any debris.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR CAR

Part 1
Preparing to Wash Your Car

1. Park your car in a shaded area.

If the body of your car is hot from sitting in the sun or from driving,
wait for your car to cool down before cleaning it. This may take 20 to 30
minutes.

Since heat can speed the drying time of soap and water, you want to
wait for your car to cool down to avoid soap and water stains.

2. Gather your supplies.

Place two buckets, a car cleanser, a soft natural sponge or a lamb’s

wool wash mitt, a cloth / rag, tire cleaner, soft terry towels, and car wax
next to your car. These materials are needed to clean your car’s exterior.

Gather your supplies
to clean the interior as
well. These supplies may
include a vacuum,
trash bag, glass
cleaner, upholstery
foam cleanser,
carpet cleaner, Q-
tips, paper towels, and
rags.

3. Fill two buckets

with water.

One bucket will be used for soaking your cloth while the other will be
used for rinsing your cloth. Fill one of the buckets with the specially
formulated car cleanser per the instructions.

Do not use dishwashing detergent or hand soap to clean your car.

These harsh household cleaners may strip off your car’s wax.

Part 2
Washing the Body

1. Rinse the car with a hose.

Rinse the entire surface of the car thoroughly before applying soap.
Make sure to remove loose dirt and debris to avoid scratching your car.
Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris with your hands.

Set the hose on a high-pressure setting to rinse hard-to-remove dirt,

debris, and grime. However, make sure the pressure isn't too high so as
not to remove your car's wax or paint.

2. Clean from the top of your car down to the bottom.

And work on one section at a time. Make sure to completely rinse each
section with water after you finish cleaning it with soap. This will prevent
the soap from drying onto your car.

3. Lather the soap with
your sponge or lamb’s
wool mitt.

Then scrub your

car in a straight up
and down motion. Do
not clean the car in a
circular motion.
Scrubbing in a circular
motion can cause swirl
marks.
Washing the body: Rinse the car
4. Rinse your sponge often.

Rinse it in the second bucket that contains water after each use. If
your sponge falls onto the ground, make sure to rinse it in the water. If
not, the debris on the sponge may scratch your car.

5. Do not let your car air dry.

This can cause watermarks and streaking. Instead, use a soft-terry

towel or a chamois (synthetic or natural) to dry it. Try blotting the water
instead of wiping it to dry your car.

Part 3
Cleaning the Wheels

1. Fill two pails with water.

Mix a cleaner into one of the buckets. Make sure to use a cleaner that
is safe for all wheel surfaces. Avoid caustic cleaners that contain acid, as
well as dishwashing detergents. These cleaners can ruin the finish on
your wheels.

One bucket will be used for cleaning and the other will be used for
rinsing your sponge.

2. Soak a soft
sponge in the
cleaning solution.

Once the sponge

has soaked for
a few minutes,
begin cleaning
one wheel at a time
from the top down.
To clean small
crevices, use a soft-
bristled
toothbrush. Cleaning the wheels: Soak a soft sponge in the solution

If your wheels are very dirty, you may need to apply a de-greaser
before cleaning them.

3. Rinse and dry the wheel.

Once your wheel is clean, rinse it thoroughly with water until all dirt
and debris are removed. Then dry the wheel with a soft cloth.

Repeat steps one through three for each wheel.

Part 4
Waxing Your Car

1. Cut a clay bar into three or four equal sections.

Flatten one of the pieces so that three of your fingers can hold it in
place. Spray a fair amount of clay lube onto a small section of the car
(24" by 24"). Then, gently glide the clay over the lubricated section in a
back and forth motion (not a circular motion).

Once the clay begins to glide smoothly over the section and you do not
hear or feel a roughness in the finish, move onto the next section. Make
sure to use the clean parts of the clay on the new sections as you work.
Clay bars are used to remove microscopic dirt from your car's body to
prevent scratching during the waxing process.

2. Squeeze a quarter-sized
amount of polish onto
your pad.

Apply the wax in a

straight up and down motion
onto the body of your car. Do
not apply it in a circular
motion, and do not wax your
windows or the trim. Use
gentle pressure when applying
the wax to get a smooth, even coat.

Make sure to apply thin layers of wax as opposed to thick layers. As a

rule of thumb, it is better to apply multiple thin layers than to apply one
thick layer.

3. Use a microfiber-buffing towel to buff the wax.

Move the towel in a straight up and down motion as opposed to a

circular motion. Use a high quality towel to prevent scratching.

Before buffing the wax, you may need to let the wax dry. It depends on
which formula you are using. To be safe, follow the product’s
instructions.

Part 5
Cleaning the Interior

1. Remove the floor mats.

Shake them out to remove dust, dirt, and debris. Place them on the
ground for vacuuming at a later time. However, you can vacuum them
right away if you want. It is your preference.

2. Remove large pieces of trash.

Pick up large pieces of trash like paper, coins, pens, and other objects
from your floorboard using your hands. Place these items in a trash bag.

Wear latex gloves to protect your hands from getting dirty.

3. Spray a glass cleaner into the cup holders.

Let the glass cleaner set for 5 to 10 minutes. Then use a paper towel
to clean out the dirt and grime. Use the BBQ skewer to pick out grime
and dirt from any small crevices.

Alternatively, place an old sock on the bottom of a mug or travel cup.

Then place the mug in the cup holder and twist to remove dirt and grime.

4. Vacuum from the top down.

Start at the top of the seats, dashboard, and console before moving to
the floor. Use the upholstery nozzle to vacuum the seats, upholstered
areas, and the headliner. Use the brush attachment to vacuum the
components that contain hard vinyl, plastic, and metal such as the
dashboard and console. To clean small crevices and tight areas, use the
crevice attachment.

Adjust the seats backwards and forwards to clean hard to reach spots
under the seats.

5. Use a carpet cleaner to clean carpet stains.

Spray the cleaner onto the stain and use a stiff bristle brush to rub it
into the carpet. Be careful not to spray too much cleaner onto the carpet
as this can cause mildew if it is not dried thoroughly.

Use a clean, dry towel to blot the stains and dry the area.

6. Spray a foam cleanser onto fabric stains.

Rub the cleanser into the stain with a soft brush. Let the cleanser dry.
Then use a vacuum to remove it per the instructions. If the stain
remains, then spray more cleanser onto the affected area and clean again
until it is gone.

If your seats are leather, then make sure to use a leather cleanser or
saddle soap to clean your seats, as well as other components of the car
that contain leather.

7. Use car wipes to sanitize the dashboard and console.

Make sure to use specially formulated car wipes. You can find these at
your local auto shop. Use Q-tips or cotton swabs to clean small areas like
radio buttons, air vents, and panel seams.

If you do not have car wipes, then an all-purpose household cleaner

that is ammonia-free will do.

8. Clean the windows with a glass cleaner.

Any household glass cleaner will do. Instead of spraying the cleaner
directly onto the window, spray it onto a clean, microfiber towel. Then
wipe both the inside and outside of your windows in a straight up and
down motion.

Roll down your windows to thoroughly clean the top section of the
window.

9. Re-vacuum the car.

This will remove any dirt and grime that was knocked out during the
cleaning process. Then shake and vacuum the floor mats thoroughly if
you have not already done so. Place them inside your car.

Use an odor-removal spray, like Febreeze, to remove any remaining

smells from your car.
