LEARNING OUTCOME 1
Clean vehicle unit
Learning Objectives:
Introduction:
This section shows the list of different and common materials and
equipment used in cleaning minor vehicle. Each item is provided with its
function in order to know its basic usage.
● Air Compressor –supplies the air flow for all equipment in a system.
Air compressors work in two phases: the compression operation and
the release operation. There are two types of compressors, positive
displacement and dynamic (also called centrifugal). The rate at which
a compressor can deliver a volume of air is noted in cubic feet per
minute (cfm). Because atmospheric pressure plays a role in how fast
air moves into the cylinder, cfm will vary with atmospheric pressure,
temperature and humidity of the air. Scfm ratings are given at a
specific pressure—3.0 scfm at 90 psi, for example. If pressure is
reduced, scfm goes up, and vice versa. Positive displacement
compressors take in air and mechanically reduce the space occupied
by the air to increase pressure. Dynamic compressors use the
mechanical action of rotating impellers to transfer pressure to the air.
Refer to Figure 1(a).
(a) (b)
Figure 2 Car Cleaning Materials: (a) Air Compressor, (b) Vacuum
● Steam Cleaner – Regardless of how you use your vehicle, the interior
can get dirty and soiled over time. Your car can get dirty in any ways.
A steam cleaner is a great solution for soiled car interiors, whether
heavily or lightly soiled. Steam is an excellent option to clean your car
for the following reasons: eliminates the need to use harmful
chemicals, penetrates deep into fabric and upholstery not just on the
surface, can be useful to cleans the upholstery in hard-to-reach
places, can be used to clean all kinds of surfaces safely, softens and
lifts dirt so you don’t have to scrub a stain for hours, and cleaning can
be done at home to quickly clean dirt before it leaves a permanent
stain. Refer to Figure 2(a).
● Wash mitt – works in a way that it collects the particles of grime and
dirt by trapping them into the mitt fibers. That way, it ensures that
there is no scratching or harming your paintwork. It traps the debris
and dirt in its deep pile before it can do any damage to the paint job. If
no wash mitt available, you may use absorbent cloth or rags. Refer to
Figure 3(a).
● Car Wax / Polish – Car wax is a product that protects and enhances
a car's paint coating. Wax is best used after cleaning and polishing to
make your car’s paintwork shine. It does this by smoothing out the
painted surface by filling swirls and scratches with a protective
coating. So instead of removing a fine layer of paint like polish does,
car wax smoothens out over on top the paint. So simply speaking,
polish removes and wax smoothens! Refer to Figure 3(c).

Waste Management
Users are responsible for the proper disposal of the waste generated
during their work. Improper waste disposal may severely endanger public
health and/or the environment. The handling of hazardous waste must be
regulated from the moment of generation until its disposal at its offsite final
destination facility. A waste management system must be devised before
work begins on any laboratory activity. Users must comply with the rules
and regulations of their institute's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)
office, which develops and implements proper waste management systems
satisfying diverse regulations and standards, such as those imposed by the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The pictures shown below are some example of OHS signage that may
be seen in the workplace not just necessarily in the driving area but also to
other areas to aid people on possible risks and hazards around.

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Know simple ways to care and use cleaning tools and equipment
2. Clean a minor vehicle unit.
INTRODUCTION
To clean your car, you can either opt for a simple body and wheel
clean, or you can choose to clean both the interior and exterior of your car.
Before you begin cleaning the exterior, make sure the body of your car is
cool and in the shade. Use specially formulated cleaners to clean the body
and wheels of your car. To clean the interior, remove the floor mats and
throw away trash. Vacuum the interior and use a foam cleanser to clean the
carpet and upholstery. Finish cleaning your car by using a window cleaner
to clean the inside and outside of your windows.
AIR COMPRESSOR
STEAM CLEANER
(1) Most units are equipped with a three-prong electrical plug. Be sure to
use a grounded three-prong electrical outlet to plug in the unit.
(2) Some units with automatically begin to heat and others require you to
flip an on the switch. Most units have a red indicator light that tells you
the machine is heating. Look for the light when your unit is plugged in.
If there is no indicator, turn the unit on by using the on the switch.
(4) Point the steam nozzle or accessory towards the item that you want to
clean, and press the steam button or trigger. Most units require you to
hold down the button or trigger for a continuous flow of steam. Always
be sure you point the steam nozzle away from yourself, others, pets, or
anything that can be harmed by the steam. Remember, steam is very hot
and can cause injury if not used correctly.
(5) Use a slight back and forth motion over the area you are cleaning. You
can also scrub the area if your unit has a utility brush connected.
Steaming a non-porous surface (such as a shower wall) and then wiping
the loosened dirt and grime with a rag is a great way to remove debris.
Even though using a rag or clean cloth is generally recommended while
the area is still wet, be careful to use caution because the surface area
may still be hot.
(6) The type of unit you have will designate how long you can use your
handheld steam cleaner before you run out of water to create steam.
Once you are done cleaning, immediately unplug the unit and place it on
a flat, level surface to cool.
(7) Generally, it takes between 30-45 minutes for a unit to cool. After the
machine has cooled down, press the steam button to release any built-
up pressure in the hose.
(9) Unscrew the boiler cap and drain the water basin into a tub or sink.
Emptying the water will help avoid mineral build-up and prolong the life
of your machine.
(10) Loosely replace the boiler cap. Do not fasten it down tightly, as this can
make it difficult to remove when you use your machine the next time.
VACUUM CLEANER
If you are not sure about the way you are using your cleaning device, please
cross the following steps:
(2) Wash the vacuum brush - it’s time for taking the vacuum brush off and
cleans it. The proper way to do it is by holding it over a bucket with
warm water. Of course, you can use dish soap or a mild detergent for
washing the brush.
(3) Check the Vacuum’s Height - most of the vacuums have adjustable
height settings, this way, you can adapt the cleaning to the varying
thickness of the carpets you are going to clean.
(4) Dry the Bristle brush - after you have done the washing, use some rugs
to dry the inside of all attachments.
(5) Comb the Bristles - while you are drying the bristle brush, use an old
comb through the bristles and pull out all the hair and other debris.
Then remove the remaining dirt.
(6) Move all the smaller items out of the cleaning area - while furniture
is not easy to move at all, well, there are other things you can move from
the area you are going to clean. Clutter can slow down the cleaning
process.
(7) Turn the vacuum on - once you make sure everything is all clean, it’s
time for turning the device on. You can use the slow even strokes while
you are pushing the machine to and fro on the carpet or the floor.
(8) Use the vacuum’s attachments - do you remember the day you first
opened the box of the new vacuum cleaner? If yes, maybe you are
visualizing all those attachments that came with the machine.
Make sure you are making full use of these accessories. If not, the
airflow will push the dirt from the untouched corners into the areas you are
done the cleaning. Wash the brushes and do the process over again
Cleaning your vacuum regularly will prevent dirt clogging and help
your Vacuum perform better and last longer. Some of the ways to do these
are:
● Take note of the brush roll and the direction of the roll belt for easy
identification and belt disengagement.
● Wash the brush bristle with warm water and detergent to weaken
hardened accumulated dirt. Scrub bristle with your fingers severally
to removed hair and carpet strands and other forms of debris.
● Drain brush of water and carefully examine for dirt and strand you
may have missed during washing. (If the brush appears weak or some
bristles missing you will need to change it)
● Expose brush to warm temperature (sunning) if possible for drying. If
brush remains moist before usage, it will accumulate strands and
debris faster than it should, this will negatively impact cleaning.
● Comb the Bristles: When fully dried, use a comb to run the bristles
through and through pulling out whatever hairs and carpet strands
are left after washing to leave it perfectly clean and strand free.
Repeat the cleaning process: How often you clean your Vacuum depends
on how often it is used.
POLISHER (BUFFER)
(1) The first thing you need to do is clean your car before using the car
buffer. Any dirt or debris left on the paintwork may scratch the paint
further.
(2) Apply a single blob of polish to the polishing head and then spread the
polish onto the paintwork which needs to be polished.
(3) Place the pad on the paintwork and ensure it’s on a slow setting.
(4) Use the buffer to spread the polish around the area.
(5) Now turn the buffer to the desired speed – this will depend on which
make of polish you are using, so be sure to follow the instructions on the
(6) Move the buffer slowly over the section to form a haze effect. You may
need to go over sections more than once.
(7) Remove the buffer from the paintwork and then turn it off.
(8) Using a polishing microfiber cloth, remove any residue that may be left
PRESSURE WASHER
(1) Check the oil and fuel levels on gasoline-powered models; do not overfill.
(2) Check the water inlet screen, located where you connect the garden hose.
Clean dirty screens with water, or replace it if damaged.
(3) If your pressure washer is equipped with an inline screen in the wand
extension, make sure it's not clogged. Clean it with water, or replace if
damaged.
(4) Inspect the spray gun, wand extension and spray tip. Make sure the
connections are secure, including the connection to the high-pressure
hose.
Test the spray gun trigger and trigger lock. If they don't function correctly,
replace the spray gun.
(5) Examine the high-pressure hose for cuts, leaks, bulges or other damage,
check the hose couplings. If the hose is damaged, read the
manufacturer's replacement instructions.
(6) Check the detergent siphoning tube and clean it out if it's clogged. If the
detergent system has a filter, check it as well.
(7) Flush out the garden hose you'll be connecting to the pressure washer.
After you finish your cleaning project, it's time to properly store your
pressure washer:
(1) Rinse detergent from the pressure washer. Remove the detergent
siphoning tube from the detergent supply and set the spray to low
pressure. Run water through the system for one or two minutes.
(3) Engage the trigger lock and let the pressure washer cool down.
(4) Disconnect the garden hose, spray gun, wand extension and high-
pressure hose. Drain water from them.
(5) Remove any remaining water from the pump. If you have gasoline-
powered model, pull the recoil handle about six times. If you have an
electric model, turn the unit on until the water exits the pump and then
turn it off immediately.
If the body of your car is hot from sitting in the sun or from driving,
wait for your car to cool down before cleaning it. This may take 20 to 30
minutes.
Since heat can speed the drying time of soap and water, you want to
wait for your car to cool down to avoid soap and water stains.
One bucket will be used for soaking your cloth while the other will be
used for rinsing your cloth. Fill one of the buckets with the specially
formulated car cleanser per the instructions.
Part 2
Washing the Body
Rinse the entire surface of the car thoroughly before applying soap.
Make sure to remove loose dirt and debris to avoid scratching your car.
Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris with your hands.
And work on one section at a time. Make sure to completely rinse each
section with water after you finish cleaning it with soap. This will prevent
the soap from drying onto your car.
Rinse it in the second bucket that contains water after each use. If
your sponge falls onto the ground, make sure to rinse it in the water. If
not, the debris on the sponge may scratch your car.
Part 3
Cleaning the Wheels
Mix a cleaner into one of the buckets. Make sure to use a cleaner that
is safe for all wheel surfaces. Avoid caustic cleaners that contain acid, as
well as dishwashing detergents. These cleaners can ruin the finish on
your wheels.
One bucket will be used for cleaning and the other will be used for
rinsing your sponge.
If your wheels are very dirty, you may need to apply a de-greaser
before cleaning them.
Part 4
Waxing Your Car
Flatten one of the pieces so that three of your fingers can hold it in
place. Spray a fair amount of clay lube onto a small section of the car
(24" by 24"). Then, gently glide the clay over the lubricated section in a
back and forth motion (not a circular motion).
Once the clay begins to glide smoothly over the section and you do not
hear or feel a roughness in the finish, move onto the next section. Make
sure to use the clean parts of the clay on the new sections as you work.
Clay bars are used to remove microscopic dirt from your car's body to
prevent scratching during the waxing process.
Figure 11
Before buffing the wax, you may need to let the wax dry. It depends on
which formula you are using. To be safe, follow the product’s
instructions.
Part 5
Cleaning the Interior
Shake them out to remove dust, dirt, and debris. Place them on the
ground for vacuuming at a later time. However, you can vacuum them
right away if you want. It is your preference.
Pick up large pieces of trash like paper, coins, pens, and other objects
from your floorboard using your hands. Place these items in a trash bag.
Let the glass cleaner set for 5 to 10 minutes. Then use a paper towel
to clean out the dirt and grime. Use the BBQ skewer to pick out grime
and dirt from any small crevices.
Start at the top of the seats, dashboard, and console before moving to
the floor. Use the upholstery nozzle to vacuum the seats, upholstered
areas, and the headliner. Use the brush attachment to vacuum the
components that contain hard vinyl, plastic, and metal such as the
dashboard and console. To clean small crevices and tight areas, use the
crevice attachment.
Adjust the seats backwards and forwards to clean hard to reach spots
under the seats.
Spray the cleaner onto the stain and use a stiff bristle brush to rub it
into the carpet. Be careful not to spray too much cleaner onto the carpet
as this can cause mildew if it is not dried thoroughly.
Use a clean, dry towel to blot the stains and dry the area.
Rub the cleanser into the stain with a soft brush. Let the cleanser dry.
Then use a vacuum to remove it per the instructions. If the stain
remains, then spray more cleanser onto the affected area and clean again
until it is gone.
If your seats are leather, then make sure to use a leather cleanser or
saddle soap to clean your seats, as well as other components of the car
that contain leather.
Make sure to use specially formulated car wipes. You can find these at
your local auto shop. Use Q-tips or cotton swabs to clean small areas like
radio buttons, air vents, and panel seams.
Any household glass cleaner will do. Instead of spraying the cleaner
directly onto the window, spray it onto a clean, microfiber towel. Then
wipe both the inside and outside of your windows in a straight up and
down motion.
Roll down your windows to thoroughly clean the top section of the
window.
This will remove any dirt and grime that was knocked out during the
cleaning process. Then shake and vacuum the floor mats thoroughly if
you have not already done so. Place them inside your car.
