Rack Mounting
You can mount the SEL-710 in a sheltered indoor environment (a building or an enclosed cabinet) that does not exceed the temperature
rating of –40°C to +85°C. For mounting consideration the relay dimensions are shown below.

the SEL-710 manual for additional details and other options.
Wire sizes for connections are dictated by the terminal blocks and expected load currents. You may use the following table as a guide in
selecting wire sizes:
Connection Type Minimum Wire Size Maximum Wire Size

Other Connection 18 AWG (0.8 mm2) 14 AWG (2.1 mm2)
Card Slot B: Main Board With IRIG-B, Ethernet, EIA-232, Fiber Optic
Step 1. Connect communications devices as required to front DB-9 serial Port F (EIA-232), rear DB-9 serial Port 3 (EIA-232),
10/100BASE-T Ethernet port (RJ45 connector) and fiber-optic (ST® connector) serial Port 2.
Step 2. Connect IRIG-B time-code input to terminals 01 (+) and 02 (-).
Card Slot C: 3 Digital Inputs, 4 Digital Outputs, 1 Analog Output Card (3 DI/4 DO/1 AO)
Step 1. Connect additional digital inputs (IN_01, IN_02, IN_03) and outputs (OUT_01, OUT_02, OUT_03, OUT_04), if required
by application, using the connection diagram.
Step 2. Connect the analog (transducer) output AO_01 using terminals 09 and 10.
6
Connections
Card Slot D: 10 RTD Inputs Card
Connect as many as ten RTDs as required by application. Example: Connect RTD1 (+) to terminal 01, RTD1 (-) to terminal 02, RTD1
(common or return) and RTD1 (shield, if available) to terminal 03.
v
Step 1. Connect Phase A, Phase B, and Phase C current inputs to terminals 01 and 02; terminals 03 and 04; and terminals 05 and 06,
respectively, following the convention shown in the typical connections diagram.
Step 2. Connect neutral current IN inputs to terminals 07 and 08.
Refer to Section 2 of the SEL-710 manual for additional details and other connection options.

Communication With Relay
There are two ways of communicating with the SEL-710 Motor Relay. You can communicate with the relay using the human-machine
interface (HMI) on the front panel or through serial port communications with a computer. For communications, the computer must
have a serial port and the operating system should be Windows® 2000 or newer. A standard EIA-232 crossover cable or an SEL-234A
cable will also be required.

SEL-710 Relays are shipped with default passwords. To prevent unauthorized access, change default passwords
to private passwords at installation. SEL shall not be responsible for damage resulting from unauthorized access.

Relay Settings
This section of the Express Installation Guide provides a step-by-step process to set the SEL-710 for basic protection purposes. For
more in-depth relay setting procedures, please refer to the SEL-710 manual or contact your local SEL representative. To get more direc-
tions on relay setting using PC configuration, please refer to Section 3 of the SEL-710 manual.
Step 1. Locate the values listed below. Some of the values needed are located on the control center nameplate while others can be
found directly on the motor nameplate.
Find the Values:
CT Ratio (CTR1) =
Full Load Amps (FLA1) =
Service Factor (SF) =
CT Ratio to Ground (CTRN) =
Phase PT Ratio (PTR) =
Line Voltage (VNOM) =
Delta/Wye Connection (DELTA_Y) =
Single V Input (SINGLEV) =
Step 2. Enter Access Level 2. Whenever prompted for a password, enter the corresponding password. To change the
character, use the arrow keys and press the ENT pushbutton to select the character. Once the full password has been
entered, scroll to Accept and press the ENT pushbutton.
Valid Password Characters Factory Default Passwords for Access Levels 1 and 2
Step 3. There are three settings sections that need to be set in order to provide basic protection. Navigate to ENT >
SET/SHOW > GLOBAL > General Settings. Once in this menu the following parameters can be set. Complete
these settings to fit the motor connected to the SEL-710 making sure to select NAMEPLATE for the APP
parameter. The other settings should be set to the values taken off the motor nameplate and to your preference.
The warning that scrolls across the top lets you know that the relay will only provide basic and default protection,
which is fine for beginning functionality. This setting will need to be changed to FULL at later date.
Step 4. The second setting section is Group settings. Navigate to ENT > SET/SHOW > GROUP > 1. In this menu there
are five sections (ID Settings, Config Settings, Thermal Overload, Neutral Overcurrent, Residual Overcurrent) and
there are parameters in each section that must be set. These values can be set from the values taken off the motor
nameplate and control center.
Step 5. The last setting section is Logic settings. The logic output 103 Fail Safe must be set to Y. The default factory
settings are set to Y so there are no changes that need to be made during this step.
9
Relay Settings
When APP = NAMEPLATE the following protection is provided by the SEL-710 based on the settings listed previously and hidden
settings (all other protections and warning functions are disabled):
➤ Thermal stator and rotor protection based on motor ratings
➤ Current unbalance protection (20% unbalance, 5 second delay)
➤ Instantaneous phase overcurrent trip level set based on IEEE C37.96 recommendation for phase overcurrent protection
➤ Ground overcurrent protection
➤ Phase overvoltage protection (1.1*VNOM, 0.5 second delay)
➤ Phase reversal protection
➤ Breaker failure protection
To reference all other applications and exact default settings when in this mode, please refer to Section 4 in the SEL-710 manual. The
nameplate application settings and the HMI menu structure are shown below.
