C6 RS6 Spark Plug

Replacement

All of these procedures are taken from Elsawin, the Audi technicians “Haynes Manual” and as such,
they reference a lot of “Audi Special Tools”, most of which can be made or bought simply.

Any reference to a “Vehicle Diagnostic Tester” means VCDS software.

Removing
– Remove engine cover panel → Chapter.
Cylinder bank 1 (cylinders 1-5, right-side)
– Remove air cleaner housing (right-side) → Chapter.
– Press release tabs and detach air
hose -1-.
– Unscrew bolts -arrows-.

– Detach crankcase breather pressure

regulating valve from air hose -2-.

– Remove bolts -1- and -2- for

connector rail.
Push connectors towards pencil-
type ignition coils, press retainers
–
by hand and unplug electrical
connectors -arrows- at pencil-type
ignition coils.
– Unplug electrical connector -3- at
Hall sender 2 -G163-.
– Move electrical wiring harness
slightly to one side.

Cylinder bank 2 (cylinders 6-9, left-side)

– Remove air cleaner housing (left-side) → Chapter.
– Remove bolts -2- and -3- for
connector rail.
Push connectors towards pencil-
type ignition coils, press retainers

by hand and unplug electrical
connectors -arrows- at pencil-type
ignition coils.
– Unplug electrical connector -1- at
Hall sender 4 -G301-.
– Move electrical wiring harness
slightly to one side.

Cylinder bank 2 (cylinder 10, left-side)

– Disconnect battery →Rep. gr.27.

Caution
Risk of irreparable damage to electronic components.
Observe measures for disconnecting the battery.

– Press release tabs and detach

crankcase breather hose -1-.

Note
Disregard -item 2-.

– Pull off seal -1- and detach plenum

chamber cover -2-.

– Pull off sealing element -1-.

Release and open lug for guiding
–
through wiring in direction of -
arrow-.

– Open cover over remote positive

terminal -1- in direction of -arrow-.
Unscrew nut -1- for remote
–
positive terminal „+“ and move
clear electrical wiring.
Unscrew bolt -2- for remote
–
negative terminal „–“ and move
clear electrical wiring.

– Unscrew nut -arrow- and move

coolant filler tank to one side

(coolant hoses -1, 2, 3, 4- remain

connected).

Take activated charcoal filter

–
system solenoid valve -N80--2- out
of bracket.
Push activated charcoal filter
– system solenoid valve -N80- to one
side with electrical wiring and
vacuum hose -1- connected.

Place adapter -10 - 222 A /4- with

– supports -T40093/1- and -
T40093/2- onto suspension turrets
(left and right).
– Engage hook -10 - 222 A /10- in
engine lifting eye (left-side).

The supports are marked for the left

or right side of the vehicle.

– Remove noise insulation panels -1-

and -2- → Chapter.

– Unscrew nuts -1- evenly on both

sides of vehicle.

Push connector towards pencil-type

ignition coil, press retainer by hand
–
and unplug electrical connector -
arrow- at pencil-type ignition coil
for cylinder 10.
– Detach air hose -1-.

– Raise engine by dimension -a- with

spindle -1- on left side.
l Distance -a- = 25 mm.

Both sides (continued)

Position puller -T40039- on thick rib

– -arrow- at the top of pencil-type
ignition coils and unplug from spark
plugs one after the other.
Unscrew spark plugs using spark
–
plug socket and extension -VAS
3122B-.

Installing
– Install new spark plugs using spark plug socket and extension -VAS 3122B- and tighten to
specified torque.
– Lubricate pencil-type ignition coils → Chapter.
– Align all ignition coils one after the other and fit loosely into spark plug apertures.
– Push ignition coils evenly onto spark plugs by hand (do not attempt to knock in coils with any
kind of tool).
– Push electrical connector for connector rail towards pencil-type ignition coil until retainer
engages.
– Screw in bolts for connector rail to specified torque.
– Install further in reverse sequence.
– Install air cleaner housings (left and right) → Chapter.
– Install engine cover panel → Chapter.
– Observe measures after connecting the battery →Rep. gr.27.

Note
t Renew seals and O-rings.
t Renew self-locking nuts.
