Introduction to Human Computer Interaction(HCI)

1 Also Known as Man Machine Interaction, Computer Human

Interaction

• is the study of the interaction between human and computer

• is the study of the users interaction with computers with the sole
aim of building systems that are useful, usable and accessible

2 It is concerned with human capabilities, limitations, and

performance, and with the design of systems that are efficient,
safe, comfortable, and even enjoyable for the humans who use
them

Introduction to Human Computer Interaction(HCI)
Different Perspective to HCI

1 Human Computer Interaction is the study of how people

interact with computers, software, and technology
• It includes studying the design of interfaces, devices, and
applications
2 Two main approaches are
• User Interfaces (UI) which are the user’s point of view on how
they interact with a device or application
• HCI which is an interdisciplinary field that studies how humans
use computers and other technologies

Introduction to Human Computer Interaction(HCI)
Different Perspective to HCI

1 Human-Computer Interaction is the study of how people

interact with computers and how they can be made more
intuitive, efficient, and useful.
• Humans have become more collaborative and computer
systems are able to learn from humans by watching their
interactions with one another
2 Human-computer interaction is the study of how humans and
computers can interact with each other
• with advances in technology and growth of AI, human-computer
interaction is now more about collaboration than automation

• Human-Computer Interaction has been a topic of interest in
recent years due to its relevance for many industries such as
healthcare and education
2 The Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is the study of how

Introduction to Human Computer Interaction(HCI)
Different Perspective to HCI

1 Human Computer Interaction is the study of how people

interact with computers, software and devices
• Because of advancement in technology and the widespread use
of smartphones. We can now use virtual assistants like Siri or
Alexa to perform tasks such as book an event or make a
reservation
• The AI-powered virtual assistants are also known as
Conversational Agents
2 Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the study of the
interactions between humans and computers, which takes
place in various contexts, ranging from personal to social
• HCI focuses on the design, evaluation, implementation, and
evaluation of interactive computing systems that can be used by
humans to accomplish specific tasks.

Foundation of HCI

OYEBADE A. (BU) CIT 304 October 24, 2023 13 / 22

Root of HCI
1 Development of usable systems draws on technologies from
user interface media, software architecture, process and data
modeling, standards, and tools for modeling, building and
testing user interfaces
2 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HCI
• It is the study of how people perceive, learn, remember and
think
• Information about human performance enters into the design
of user interfaces from three sources: empirical data about
human performance, theories of performance, and methods of
observing and analyzing HCI systems
• These techniques can be used to predict the usability and
learnability of systems before they are built
3 Computer in HCI
• The area of Computer Science in HCI studies and develops the
abstractions, techniques, languages, and tools to address this
problem

Goals of HCI?

1 The goals of HCI are

• The goal of human-computer interaction is to make the
interaction between humans and computers as natural as
possible.
• The goal of Human Computer Interaction is to create a system
that fulfills the needs of users by providing them with an
interface that’s easy to use
• The goal of HCI is to design a system that helps users to interact
with computers and digital devices in a more natural way.

OYEBADE A. (BU) CIT 304 October 24, 2023 15 / 22

What is HCI?

1 It is the study, planning and design of how people and

computers works together so that a person needs are satisfied
in the most effective way

2 Important things to know for Designers

• Design toward what people want and expect

• How information system processing work

• What people find enjoyable and attractive

• Software and hardware limitation must be considered

OYEBADE A. (BU) CIT 304 October 24, 2023 16 / 22

Why HCI?

1 It provide a platform in which user-centred designs methods

are used

2 It allows design methods to be evaluated

3 It provides a real world environment which allows the

development of new theories of user psychology

Useful, Usable and Accessible

1 Useful:

• It means user can achieve the task they want to achieved

2 Usable:

• It means user can achieve the task they want to achieved easily
without any constraints

3 Accessible:

• It means that the system is made available to the authorized

users at any time

Natural Computing

1 Natural Computing is the study of how people process and

store information, manipulate symbols, ascribe personal
values to events, attribute cultural and emotive judgement and
so on

2 It is also how interactive artefacts is used to enhance our

lifesytles

3 Artefact Includes: Television, computer system, mobile phones

and embedded processor

Three Linked Aspects of Natural Computing
1 The User Perspective
• This is the creation of User model that place users at the
centred of the process.
• It allow us to achieved user-centred system design

2 The Designer’s Perspective

• This is the designer’s ability to understand the users well so as
to design well for them

• It means that the Designers have to study the users process

3 The Sustainability Perspective:

• This is the link between the User’s perspective and Designers’
perspecive
• This is the creation of artefact that support our strenght and
weaknesses
