Based on my knowledge, when a force is applied to a structural member, the
force causes the member to generate both stress and strain. Stress is defined as
the force carried by a member per unit area. Axial stress is a kind of normal stress
in which the force is directed in the same direction as the area resisting the force.
When a force is applied perpendicular to the cross-sectional area of a material, it
results to normal stress. It is the axial force-induced stress. Since the direction of
the force is parallel to the region resisting the force, two types of shear stress are
formed such as transverse shear stress and torsional stress. When the applied
force is parallel to the resisting zone, shear stress arises. The Normal stress or
Axial Stress acting on an inner plane is perpendicular to that plane. Shear stress,
on the other hand, is perpendicular to the plane in which it operates. Shear stress
occurs when applied stresses cause one piece of a body to move past another
section.
